The best camping near Alamosa with horseback riding

Experience a new side of Colorado when you camp near Alamosa. From the San Luis Valley, you're just minutes from dense forests and rolling sand dunes just begging to be explored.

It's easy to get stoked about Great Sand Dunes National Park. Outdoor lovers come from across the country to see the jaw-dropping dune field that covers 30 square miles. Hike the tallest dunes on the continent—the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Blanca Peak are worth the climb.

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Try sandboarding or sand sledding down the dunes. (Get your rental gear in Alamosa). Afterward, cool down in refreshing Medano Creek. After a day in the dunes, pitch a tent on the sand—all you need is a backpacking permit. The park also boasts a developed campground, Pinon Flats.

Keep in mind the dunes can get swamped in the summer. For a less crowded alternative, check out San Luis Lake State Park. The secluded campground has RV sites and tent sites but remember to BYOW (bring your own wood).

For stunning views of the dune field, Zapata Falls Campground is your best bet. This rustic state camping area's 9,000-foot elevation promises sweeping vistas of rugged Colorado terrain. Keep in mind all sites are first-come, first-served.

On the other side of Alamosa, you find Rio Grande National Forest. Here, you can enjoy hiking trails and tent camping amid densely wooded hills. You can even catch some dinner at Terrace Reservoir.

Around Alamosa, a huge range of RV parks, rustic tent camps, and decked out cabins are available. Some are just steps from the Rio Grande, which cuts through the city. Whatever your camping style, it's easy to find the perfect spot within minutes of the area's state and national parks.

Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like. Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash. Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies. On holidays, however, expect it to be busy. Our dogs are working dogs and they are more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make their jobs easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dogs. And please report any issues promptly. This year we have a new Great Pyrenees to greet you, her name is Boudicca and she’s excited to meet everyone! Returning this season is 12 year old KayLee, also a GP and and Finn, our little dude from Alaska. Quiet time begins at 10:00 pm. Your site is overlooking the Sangre de Christo mountain range. The land is Alpine desert with sagebrush and ground cactus and incredible star gazing. There are 2 great hiking trails within a couple miles. There are 3 hot springs within 30 minutes. The Great sand dunes national park is within 1hr. The San Luis valley offers, hiking, mountain biking, ATV trail, Horse back riding, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, rafting, refuges for wildlife watching. New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. This will cause the toilet to be unusable. ATTENTION: THE SHOWER HOUSE AND TOILET WILL BE SHUTTING DOWN AND GETTING WINTERIZED OCTOBER 1ST UNTIL MAY 1ST. No fireworks are permitted at any time.

Welcome to the San Luis Valley; the largest Alpine Valley in the world! San Luis Valley is a region in south-central Colorado with a small portion overlapping into New Mexico. Great Sand Dunes are visible from every site. With unlimited mountain views, beautiful starry night skies, come see the Milky Way, Eclipse, even Meteor showers!!! History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years. In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing! My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all! You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. Be sure to bring extra bug spray and protection needed against biting insects such as flies, gnats, and mosquitoes. For those bringing your pets, they MUST be on a leash/lead at all times. While I do not have much cactus on my property, I do have an abundance of greasewood (Chico brush) which is very thorn-like if stepped on. Accommodations for those with livestock or horses, just make sure you chat in advance your initial message. Close to BLM, and National Forest as well as 3 hot springs within 20 miles and the Great Sand Dunes. All three sites provide 360 panoramic views with epic sunrise and sunset views of Mount Blanca. Wild horses and prong horned antelope may wander the Mesa as you enjoy your camp. The natural beauty of these three campsites is worth protecting so please if you pack it in, pack it out. This is a dry camp with no toilet or garbage facilities. As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive. The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared. There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land. Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills. Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig. There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet. Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land. If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

It's easy to get stoked about Great Sand Dunes National Park. Outdoor lovers come from across the country to see the jaw-dropping dune field that covers 30 square miles. Hike the tallest dunes on the continent—the views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Blanca Peak are worth the climb.

Looking for an adrenaline rush? Try sandboarding or sand sledding down the dunes. (Get your rental gear in Alamosa). Afterward, cool down in refreshing Medano Creek. After a day in the dunes, pitch a tent on the sand—all you need is a backpacking permit. The park also boasts a developed campground, Pinon Flats.

Keep in mind the dunes can get swamped in the summer. For a less crowded alternative, check out San Luis Lake State Park. The secluded campground has RV sites and tent sites but remember to BYOW (bring your own wood).

For stunning views of the dune field, Zapata Falls Campground is your best bet. This rustic state camping area's 9,000-foot elevation promises sweeping vistas of rugged Colorado terrain. Keep in mind all sites are first-come, first-served.

On the other side of Alamosa, you find Rio Grande National Forest. Here, you can enjoy hiking trails and tent camping amid densely wooded hills. You can even catch some dinner at Terrace Reservoir.

Around Alamosa, a huge range of RV parks, rustic tent camps, and decked out cabins are available. Some are just steps from the Rio Grande, which cuts through the city. Whatever your camping style, it's easy to find the perfect spot within minutes of the area's state and national parks.

The Great Sand Dunes and Zapata Falls is just a (gorgeous) 35 minute drive. Camping here at the Rabbit Hole Ranch is primitive and dispersed (no numbered sites) and there 30 acres available for you to use. Just follow the signs to the designated area and pick out a spot you like. Some spots have fire rings, some don’t. We are working on getting more, but in the meantime you’re welcome to bring your own. Or feel free to dig out a little hole. It works great and is easy to extinguish when you fill it back in and bury it. Please do not bury any trash. Typically, you will experience a rare kind of solitude and silence that feels…. other-worldly, with incredible sunrises and sunsets filling the enormous skies. On holidays, however, expect it to be busy. Our dogs are working dogs and they are more than happy to help keep you and your pets safe. Please help make their jobs easier by not leaving any food or trash in or around tents. Please keep your pets on leash or under control until you’re comfortably certain they get along with our dogs. And please report any issues promptly. This year we have a new Great Pyrenees to greet you, her name is Boudicca and she’s excited to meet everyone! New for 2024, The flushable toilet and shower are now operational. The shower house is located in the center of the loop with sites 1,2,3 on the south side of the building. It has an on demand water heater, there is also a a flushable toilet located in the same space. An important note about the toilet, Do Not flush anything other than toilet paper please. DO NOT flush feminine hygiene products, napkins or hand wipes or anything other than toilet paper. These type of things plug and burn up the pump while pumping out the tank. History: this land was originally part of a large cattle ranch in the 1980s. The main ranch is still up and running but this parcel was used for many purposes over the years. In 2021, we were featured in USA Todays Ten Best for star gazing! My property has 360 degree mountains views with the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range as our back yard. Nearby you can find many different trail systems for all kinds of outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking to jeeping, ATV or dirt biking and equestrians - you can find it all! You will be surrounded by BLM land, BACA land, and Wildlife Refuge just two miles away. As the Scenic Passenger Train is heard in the distance you'll look up towards Mount Blanca and imagine your next adventure living among the wildflowers of this High Desert Mountain Hipcamp. After recovering from a wildfire, the ancient sage brushes that had previously made the land harsh and unwelcoming are nearly gone, replaced with an abundance of grasses and wildflowers if blessed with rains. Open Land as far as you can go to the East you'll follow the Coyote canyon to high mountain lookouts. There are old logging maintenance roads you could take advantage of, so Hike, Bike or Motor around the local area. Fort Garland and Blanca have a community center (pool), septic dump and water fill and can provide groceries. The Great Sand dunes are about 45 minutes away. The Sand Dunes swimming pool, fed by a very hot artisan well is about an hour away. Mountain Home Lake is also within 1/2 an hour or so for fishing/water sports with a nice boat ramp. Escape from light pollution like never before, a clear night sky will make the whole trip worthwhile! Lots of wild life and you will most likely see some deer, hear the coyotes, and count the different colors of the humming birds. You can book a train ride out of Alamosa, and visit the local historic towns. The views will make it hard to leave the campsite, but there are tons of experiences and things to do in the area so make sure to do some research before you arrive. The weather and wind can be unpredictable in the mountains, so be prepared. There are two entrances onto the property, one at the bottom and one at the top. You can avoid some wind by camping near Lewis-Smith Rd at the lowest part of the land. Also, the site can accommodate large trailers/RV's but just make sure to plan your entrance/exit carefully and don't go to far down the hills. Just choose a wise spot to park if in a big rig. There are some small tires around that you can use to sit on or if you dig a hole that you fill in before leaving you can make a temporary toilet. Make sure to haul out all your trash and leave the site cleaner than it was when you arrived and respect the land. If you do come across a mess from the previous camper and clean it up, just let us know and we will give you a refund for the night. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

We had a great time staying out here this past weekend. It was very windy and rainy, but that is to be expected. The property is very calming and open, which is great for the astrophotography we were able to take. Clouds made it difficult, but that isn't Christine's fault! The water from the pump is very rusty, and we opted not to drink/use it. However, there is a Dollar General 6 miles up the road, so it was no big deal! Would definitely recommend staying here.

We loved sharing a cozy mattressed bed in a tiny trailer - my 6'4 husband was in & out all night looking at the stars & the milky way. Rio Grande Gorge is across the fields to the west. And the Tibetan Buddhist stupa is to the south. Very special land, & beautiful spirit of Jessica tending to it.

We loved this campsite! It is secluded, but not too far from the city and Sanchez Reservoir. Though we heard vehicles drive by, we did not see anyone because the site is tucked back in the trees and brush. The cleared pathways and places for tents made it easy to access. The tree stumps near the fire pit were also a nice touch.

We absolutely loved our stay at High Peaks! Site 17 was in the perfect corner with no one between our view of the mountains and site itself was big enough to fit two 4-person tents, a 6-person tent and 2 vehicles. There were a few sites nearby to us, but noise was not an issue. We were lucky enough to not have anyone in the sites next to us at first, but even when campers showed up it was very peaceful. We felt like we had our own private campsite even with it being Labor Day weekend! The porta-potties were SO clean (probably the cleanest I've been in), and the toilet paper was stocked up until our last day. We appreciated that there was firewood on-site and took advantage of not having to go anywhere. The picnic table was also nice to have, and the potable water on-site was a huge blessing. Wifi didn't work from our campsite but service was still available for calls & texts. Wind was a slight issue for us the first day, high gusts of up to 15 MPH and we had some difficulty keeping our tents down and no campfires in those conditions. It didn't effect our experience at all after it died down, but I would recommend bringing extra stakes. It also gets very hot with no tree coverage. Sunrise & sunset had the most incredible 360 views, if you're looking for a beautiful, peaceful environment - stay here!! 10/10 would recommend again.
