Elks Campground is located at the north end of the park, with some of the campsites on the shore of the lake and others a very short walk away. With a plethora of spots to pick from and fishing, boating, hiking, and biking nearby, there really is something for everyone. True to its name, Elks is located on a broad prairie that’s home to elk (and eagles and hawks). This is some real John Denver shiz right here.

This campground is amazing. On the high plains of Colorado, it makes for unbelievable stargazing. Shortly after a gorgeous sunset, the planets made their appearance and after midnight...what a show! The stars seemed so close you could touch them and the Milky Way - just wow! The campsite is perched above a reservoir that, although a bit mucky on the bottom this late in the season (mid-September), still made for a refreshing swim after a long day of travel.
The campground had clean restrooms with pay showers and a laundromat.
Nearby (same park) is a quieter campground that we will try on our next trip. Chimney View may lack trees and electricity, but it does have the same great views AND the bonus of prairie dog entertainment.

A gorgeous sunset from our site. Covered picnic tables at all sites
