Description

Skillman Horse Campground caters especially to those with horses. No surprise there. If you don’t have any horses you can still enjoy this campground. But we gotta say, it’s pretty sweet if you do. Namely, the Pioneer trail offers excellent horseback riding, which stretches 25 miles through the Tahoe National Forest and leaves right from camp. Plus, each site can accommodate up to four horses and there are water troughs and hitching racks-a-plenty, so you can safely say this is a horse-friendly campground.

I stayed here recently with a large group. No horses but a few dogs to round out the gang! This is a great campground for large groups as the sites are spaced far apart. Only non-potable water available during our stay. Drop toilets only.

If you like to horse camp, Skillman Horse Camp is one of the best in northern California. It is maintained by the local equestrian group, Gold Country Trails Council, who have added corrals to many of the campsites. It is not a good camp for non horse people, as there are horses high lined and tied to trailers, not safe for children or pets off leash. Nevada City is not far for for supplies.
