Riddle Hill Homestead is a family-run property on 24 acres in Grafton, New Hampshire, bordered by the Smith River and Manfeltree Brook. Our campsites are tucked into the woods, along field edges, and in the meadow, with a mix of open skies, tree cover, brook sounds, and quiet places to sit by the fire. We are a working homestead, not a traditional campground, but we try to make off-grid camping comfortable and welcoming. Campers have access to a community picnic and BBQ area, non-potable water, an off-grid shower area, and a real port-a-potty near the movie and community area. We also provide one gallon of drinking water when you arrive. Most individual sites include a portable camp toilet inside a small pop-up privacy tent. The Meadow sites do not, so please check the individual site description before booking. Most sites also have their own fire pit. The Meadow sites and Overnight Adventurer use community fire pits instead. Your first bundle of firewood is included, and additional bundles are available for $5. Our roadside Cookie Shop carries fresh-baked cookies, cold drinks, novelty ice creams, local products, eggs from our hens, snacks, and a small honor-system selection of camping basics and forgotten essentials when available. In October 2025, the shop was featured as the first stop on NH Chronicle’s Cookie Crawl. Friday Night Movie Night is one of our favorite summer traditions. Campers are welcome to bring a chair or blanket, grab a snack, and watch a family-friendly movie under the stars. Some nights also include a small market, kids’ activities, or other community events. (No movie August 14th) The Craft Cottage is our creative studio, where we host workshops, open studio time, blacklight paint parties, family activities, and seasonal events. Camping guests receive 15% off classes and workshops during their stay. You may also catch Michelle making glass beads or working on whatever project has taken over the studio that week. During normal rainfall, the brook is a nice place to wade and explore, though water levels depend on the season and weather. You can find upcoming workshops, movie nights, markets, and other events here: [xxxxxxxx] Nature provides most of the background noise. You may hear hens announcing a freshly laid egg, Mister the rooster crowing, peepers, frogs, birds, crickets, the brook, or an occasional owl. We also have dark skies and quiet country evenings. The town beach and Northern Rail Trail are a short walk away. Hiking, lakes, mountain views, Ruggles Mine, and Haunting Whisper Vineyard & Spirits are also nearby. Please remember that Riddle Hill Homestead is a working rural property. Wildlife, farm animals, uneven ground, tall grass, changing weather, bugs, and country sounds are all part of the experience. This site is our favorite spot on the entire property. We debated for quite awhile on whether or not to share this spot with campers. This spot is surrounded on 3 sides by our little brook. Even when the brook gets low late in the summertime, you will fall asleep to water bubbling over the rocks. The site includes a table and chairs, large waterfront fire pit and even a few singing hammock style chairs. In this section of the yard we do NOT own both side of the brook, so we ask that you stay on our side of the brook.

Overnight Adventurer is our first of several campsites. This one is located right off Riddle Hill Rd. making it the perfect overnight spot for our Northern Rail Trail guests and others. Looking for a peaceful escape with a touch of adventure? Our cozy campsite is the perfect spot to relax, explore, and reconnect with nature. Located just 0.2 miles from the scenic Northern Rail Trail, it’s an ideal base for biking, hiking, or enjoying the tranquility of the countryside. **Site Overview** Our 24x18 campsite is next to a quiet, low-traffic road, surrounded by lush greenery for privacy and serenity. It comfortably fits two small tents—ideal for friends or family. **Amenities** We offer shared amenities, including: - Picnic tables - Waterfront fire ring - **Eco-Friendly Toilet**: A carry-out camp toilet. **Cooling Off** Enjoy cooling off in the shallow brook running through our property. Wade or splash in the refreshingly cold water on a summer day. ***we are currently having an unusually dry summer and the brook is extremely low*** **Exploring Nature** With over 20 acres to roam, our land borders the Smith River and Manfeltree Brook with a beautiful marsh (bring boots) —great for wildlife watching. The meadow is perfect for stargazing on clear nights. **Nearby Lakes and Adventures** The Grafton town Beach, Huff Beach, is at the other end of Davis Rd, about 1/2 mile from us if you want something more than our small brook to cool off in. If you love lakes, we have three nearby for kayaking or canoeing, with many spots easy to access. For added adventure, visit Mt. Cardigan or Ragged Mountain, both a short drive away, or explore Ruggles Mine, just 2.4 miles from us. **On-Site Shop** Don’t miss our small on-site shop, featuring fresh-baked cookies, farm-fresh eggs, and locally made gifts. On weather-permitting Saturdays, browse handmade goods from local crafters. Whether you're enjoying your morning coffee beneath the trees, roasting marshmallows by the fire, or watching the stars emerge overhead, Behind the Pines provides a relaxed New Hampshire camping experience without feeling crowded. Depending on the season, you may hear peepers, frogs, songbirds, crickets, and the occasional owl as nature settles in for the evening. The Birches

Located near one of the property's wetland areas, The Marsh Edge offers a peaceful camping experience with a mix of open sky and nearby tree cover. In spring and early summer, many guests enjoy falling asleep to the chorus of peepers and frogs calling from the nearby marsh. Situated at the far end of the camping area, this site provides some distance from the property's busier gathering spaces while remaining within easy walking distance of shared amenities. Another campsite is located nearby, making this a great choice for campers who enjoy a quieter setting without being completely isolated. Brookside Camping at The Point

Riddle Hill Homestead was a wonderful experience! The campsite was as advertised, complete with fire pit, hammock swing chairs and surrounded by a babbling brook…so peaceful! The owners were lovely people and host a Friday night movie under the stars, do catch the Friday Movie Night if you can this summer! Also, if you are really lucky, you might get to pet a very good boy!! We were delighted to indulge in yummy homemade cookies from their roadside cookie stand, which also had fresh NH made donuts for purchase in the morning, win win for us! Since we were already packing paddle boards and bicycles for this particular weekend adventure (both activities are readily accessible within minutes of this campsite) we opted to rent all of the overnight camping amenities! So glad we did! We arrived in the evening to a fully setup campsite: roomy and airy tent, blown up queen size mattress, clean white sheets and pillows, and 2 lightweight sleeping bags perfect for the weather! We could not be more pleased with our stay!

Great biking adventure stop-over!

We had a lovely stay at Riddle Hill Homestead. The campsite is well located on a flat opening under trees. This kind of campsite is superior to camping on grass - the pine needles are soft and dry and the tree cover limits dew from your gear in the morning. The campsite was cool and comfortable for sleeping on a hot August weekend and kept comfortable all morning until we come down to pack the car and realized how hot the day already was down in the sun. The site was quiet for sleeping at night. The tent location is nearly across the neighbors house through trees and was private, but we got the benefit of his outdoor lighting to provide difuse light that made it easier to find our stuff in the tent at night without needing to use our lamp. The roosters at the house and in the neighboorhood start talking to each other in the morning, and we enjoyed hearing them in the distance. We didn't need to use bathroom or shower facilities but saw there were options available. The hosts communicate well and provided a list of things to do in the area. She was friendly and greeted us when we came in. Canaan was close by for a BBQ dinner once we had our tent up, and the Danbury Country store was so wonderful with seating and hot food for breakfast in the morning. Thank you so much for hosting us!
