If Charleston, West Virginia is on your vacation itinerary, you have to add Kanawha State Park to your bucket list. Hikers, mountain bikers, and cross country skiers will be thrilled with the diversity of trails that crisscross the park. Birders will seek out the 19 species of wood warblers that nest here in the spring and summer. The outdoor swimming pool and rad playgrounds will delight kids, and parents will find plenty of opportunities for relaxing with a cold drink. Kanawha Campground is a beautiful respite from the area’s urban center, perfect for unplugging, unwinding, and underachieving.

My boys and I were literally the only people in the campground in early June. A ranger came and talked to us to make sure we knew how to get help if we needed (we didn't). Lots of good trails in the State Forest there, and the pool is nice when it's open.
