Bluff Hollow is just about a perfect camping experience just a short drive from Rochester and not too far from the Twin Cities. Secluded location. Outhouse on site. Sandy river. We had a rad weekend camping with friends, splashing around with the kids and fishing and canoeing on the North Branch of the Root River.
The land is located down a long minimum maintenance road (that's a bit rocky), but once on the land we had no problem getting our little hybrid in and out (even up and down the access road to the river sites). We setup camp near the river. There's a few sites you can setup down there or at the upper campground that would be ideal for RVers or tents. Both of your options have fire rings while the outhouse is situated near the upper site.
We camped at the end of a spit of sand while our friends setup camp in the adjacent woods where there's a big opening for a few tents. The river sites lie just across from the impressive sandstone bluff a stones throw across the Root. Most of the time we spent lounging about in the water and exploring the nooks and crannies of the river. I did a little fishing and caught a couple little bass (It looks like this would be an ideal location for trout fishing). There was the occasional visitor (maybe 3 times all weekend) from the county park across the river, but we didn't mind. One of our best Hipcamp experiences to date.
Had a great time here! Felt very private, aside from a canoe or two paddling by. I’d advise not taking your vehicle to the river side camps as we just made it with our little 4wd Toyota. Beautiful setting, plenty of shade, nice and quiet. Had a deer stroll through in the afternoon. The upper campground looked nice as well, but we opted for the water. Eric was a great host. My 9 yr old declared it as the best campsite in his life, so there you go. We’ll be back, though maybe we’ll leave the truck up top!
If you are looking for seclusion this place is perfect. You are basically alone for your entire stay. River was a good surprise too as it was a perfect spot to hang out with a really nice sand bar and warm water. Camping area is kept in really nice shape and has lots of shade as well. Eric, the host, was phenomenal to work with. His directions were spot on and his land is beautiful. The site is very private and allows for a total escape. The trail to the river provides for quite the adventure if traveling by 4x4. If not camping with a 4x4, park up top and enjoy a walk down. Eric goes above and beyond for his guests.
Bluff Hollow was an excellent camping spot. The upper site is very nice but we ended up staying down by the river which was amazing! The site is beautiful, well maintained, and so private and there’s a great rocky beach for swimming with an awesome view of the bluffs. We saw deer and two Bald Eagles during our stay. Eric was helpful and we really appreciate him sharing this amazing spot!
We had a great time camping at the upper site and wading in the river. The camp was kept up amazingly well, clean with firewood, a nice sturdy table, a clean outhouse, and plenty of space for tents and hammocks. Might be a bit tricky getting in and out when it rains, but great when it's dry. Beautiful spot!
