in Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park, California
This is right off the highway and when I saw "right off" I mean when you get there & you take 5 steps for forward you are quite LITERALLY standing on the highway. Beautiful scenery, but traffic all night long. Imagine 18 wheelers zooming by your tent all night...that's pretty much this. Unless you book one of the 5 spaces that isn't butted up to the highway.
in Tahoe National Forest, California
Lovely, but close together. Try to get a space near the water and nowhere near the bathrooms or people will walk through your site. It's a thing.
in Eldorado National Forest, California
If you like boats, boating and boat people, this place if for you. If you like a little bit of quiet, peace and non-belligerent sunburned boozed up bros, keep it moving down the road to any of the hundred other amazing grounds in El Dorado National Forest.

If you can't get in to Wolf Creek, go here.
in Mendocino Lake, California
It's pretty and I have a lot of great childhood memories from the place, but man, methheads be staying (UP) for days here! It's like every tweaker from the Lake County area decided to holiday here the weekend that we camped. Parties on three of the 4 sides of our site had overstayed their long-term reservations and were being kicked out during our stay here. We watched a woman clean out her car 3 times one day...I don't think she found what she was looking for. Meth...shit's crazy!

Gorgeous!

One of my favorite campgrounds ever! Just under 2 hours from Sacramento, but like you're in an entirely different world.
