One of the few places on the Skyline Drive that you can buy gasoline! A small hotel and rustic cabins are available if camping isn't your thing. Camping is available nearby at Loft mountain. Also has a full service restaurant and a separate recreation/bar room with live acoustic music on some weekend nites.

After a very short walk west of the campground there are incredible sunset views of the blue ridge mountains. The Appalachian trail goes right past the campground and a camp store with a shower is available.

in Bear Creek Lake State Park, VirginiaDan I.recommends this listing.
This campground is in a wilderness area with virtually no sounds from surrounding population centers - if you like quiet go here in the off season. Also, the cabins are well built with fully equipped kitchens and large covered porches - some with beautiful views of the lake. If you're up for a nice long walk, an easy to moderate 2-3 mile hike takes you all the way around the lake. There's a sandy beach with a snack bar that's open in the summer months.

Campsites have lots of space between sites if you like privacy. All campsites have a bear proof box so you don't have to store your coolers and food in the car. Trails up the mountain next to the lake provide nice views of the lake below.
Past trip
in Claytor Lake State Park, VirginiaDan I.recommends this listing.
A really nice camp site with clean modern bath houses - some of the camp sites are fairly close to one another but if you check out all four loops you can find the perfect site. A short walk down the hill takes you to the huge lake, bath house, snack bar and swimming area with diving platform. Covered picnic areas with bathrooms nearby make it the perfect place for family gatherings
