Past trips
in Illini State Park, Illinois
Bike camped from Chicago to Illini multiple times. Nearly a trail the entire route. If you get tired, you can always take the Metra from Joliet to/from Chicago. The route is very flat with tightly packed crushed limestone. Bugs can get intense at some spots, but as long as you keep moving you'll be okay. The camp grounds is fine. Nothing exceptional other than being on the river. Barges can get loud at night when they blow their horns, but it is otherwise quiet. Some snakes will hang around the Desplaines river but are fine. Lastly, the route to/from does not have much access to towns or bike shop so be prepared to make repairs on your own if needed.
