A few things to note about camping at The Sticks:
-Unpacking/Setting-up Camp: During the Fall (starting in September) we suggest getting here with plenty of time to unload and set-up before 5:00pm. The waters rise at night, making it difficult to cross after dark.
-BATHROOMS: Each booking includes a portable camp toilet, seat w/ lid, waste bag, and one roll of toilet paper.
-PARKING: 1 parking spot per booking.
-SHADE: Bring Shade!!! There are few trees near the riverbank. Shade rentals coming soon!
-EXTRAS: We offer breakfast, firewood, tubing, ice, water, etc on site! Message for details or select extras upon checkout!
-PETS: ...are SO welcome! They love this place!
-PACKING: The campsites are located behind the main house, down a staircase, and across a bridge. (2-3 minute trek) Campers do it every day, but the walk is definitely worth noting while planning your pack.
-WILDLIFE: The Sticks is home to a variety of native wildlife, some of which being dangerous if happened upon! Awareness of your surroundings is the best defense from unwanted encounters with critters such as snakes, spiders, etc...
-NEIGHBORHOOD: Our community is SO diverse and lively and we encourage you guys to explore! Little Thailand has BOMB food. Zipline and skydive up the street! The Water Hole Saloon is the best little dive bar to catch local tunes, outdoor shows, and karaoke! List goes on - If you need suggestions, message us!

Natural features you'll find at The Sticks - Camping on the River in Texas.
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
Book the whole island for your crew! We did and loved the privacy. Great, chill, low water traffic location. Great hosts and extras. Sat in the rushing shallow waters of the river for hours. Feeling brand new. Keep in mind that its a steep path down to camp so pack light or have many hands to make the work light. We'll be back! Enjoy!
This site was amazing! The river was beautiful and so refreshing. My dogs especially loved being able to run free and play in the river. I loved the peace and serenity. I will say that depending on how much gear you need for camping, you need to be reasonably fit to cart everything down the stairs and across the stream, and then back up when you leave.
Great place if you like private camping spots and easy river access. Our hosts were very sweet and accommodating. We ordered the breakfast oatmeal and bowl...both delicious. They delivered our ice and firewood right to our camp site and the river float was definitely worth the $20. We will definitely return when the weather cools down!
We’ve stayed at the island twice now, and both times have been FANTASTIC. It’s beautiful, private, and a true dream. We watched the sunset and floated down the river.
One thing to note is that you float to somewhere the opposite bed of the river, so it’s quite a trek to drop cars off/make arrangements. They weren’t able to shuttle us at this weekend, so maybe we could have avoided that, but just something to note!
The hosts are incredible and met us right when we got there helping us navigate the island. The bridge was washed away with the storm but I’m sure they will get it back soon, and with the bridge it is super easy to get all belongings down to the campsite.
We will definitely be camping there again! Great vibes.
Great sites close to austin
We stayed at campsite #2 and it offered some absolutely beautiful views of the river and surrounding area. Hosts were super friendly and accommodating. There is a short walk down stairs followed by a narrow river crossing. The bridge was out, so it did require wading across. Host was very up front with this and even offered to help with a site at a neighboring property, it was a non-issue for us. I recommend watching their video and packing accordingly. Very little shade at the campsites, so again plan and pack accordingly. Despite being near water we weren't bothered by mosquitos. Sites are fairly close together, so if you require peace and quiet it will be somewhat dependent on your camp mates. Fortunately our neighbors were super friendly and respectful. Overall we had a great stay, dogs had a great time, and we will likely be back (albeit when its a bit cooler)
We LOVED The Sticks! The land is gorgeous and the sunsets are exceptional. We had a great time wading & swimming in the river and felt like we had it all to ourselves. So many beautiful rocks & dragonflies too.
The water we waded through to get to the site was about a foot deep. The picnic table at our site had been washed away in a storm recently, but our kind host Eric brought down a foldable table for us to use. As mentioned in the listing, there's no bathroom, so keep that in mind :).
There is a special energy here; we look forward to returning!
The spot is absolutely beautiful! A few things we wish we had known though: in the walkthrough video, the crossing of the river has only a couple of inches of water to wade through as a part of getting to the site. This was absolutely not our experience, particularly in the mornings. We had to move three kids and all our camping gear through a stretch of very quickly moving water that went up to our waists.
Also, there is a picnic table at only one of the sites. We had a small table to put some things on at our site, but no place to sit for meals which was difficult especially since we had purposely packed as little as possible since it would have to be taken down the stairs and across the water.
The walkthrough video also shows a port-a-potty at the top of the stairs and says that it's serviced twice weekly. This is no longer at the site, so all bathroom activities have to be done outside. I really wish we had known this before coming with our small children. Since the hosts stress the need to watch the video before booking, I really relied on that to accurately show us the campsite.
I think the site overall can be a great place to stay--falling asleep to the sound of the river was magical, and the sunsets were truly spectacular. Just be aware of what you're getting into!
Can't wait to go back
I'm so lucky that I stumbled up on this gem. I was looking for a place to camp and wanted to be on the water, away from the "campsite crowds" and within 40 minutes of home because it was going to be a quick trip. This spot crossed them all off my list.
We arrived at the location and were graciously welcomed by owners and offered help with our gear. This came in very handy with the kayaks that were sticking out of my truck. They have bundles of wood for sale onsite and delivered it to our campsite. It got a little colder than I though it would, so this was nice!
After setting up camp on a level spot right by the fire pit, we stuck our chairs in the water and opened up an adult beverage. The campsite has a picnic table, 1/2 drum fire pit and awesome views. It was hard to not just chill out and take a nap, but we wanted to get some fishing and kayaking in.
We each caught fish right off of the campsite and kayaked up river to do some exploring. The water was knee to waist deep by the campsite with fish feeding all morning once the sun starts to set. We've already decided that we're going to be tubing on our next visit.
The plan is to rent the whole island on our next visit and invite some friend to join us. Looking at their booking calendar, we will probably have to plan well in advance.
We were looking for a spot on the water that didn’t require a hike in and wasn’t too far outside of Austin. The Sticks was perfect! Beautiful spot right on the running water. Peace and quiet! Good people, good spot. We will be back soon. GO STICKS!
