Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Spacious Skies Balsam Woods is a hidden paradise of a campground located right in the heart of Maine, just a half hour south of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine, and 60 miles as the crow flies from the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Katahdin, in Baxter State Park.
We offer both wooded and open sites that can accommodate most rigs. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, water, 30 or 50-amp electrical service, and most offer sewer. Groups and tent campers are welcome.
Balsam Woods campground is less than a minute’s drive from Piper Pond, a 2-mile-long lake with public boat launch and beach access. Onsite, we have a camp store and snack bar stocked with necessities, treats, and goodies for the whole family. There is no shortage of fun activities with our heated pool, classic rec hall, playground, a new jumping pillow, and gem mining! We have three cozy rustic cabins as well as three deluxe cabins for those wanting to experience the beauty of the great outdoors but who may not be ready for the tenter or RV life!

Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. Today several West Branch rafting companies make the inn their seasonal center of operations.At Big Moose, we bring you a rare blend of friendly service and lovely surroundings that successfully reflects our unique personality. Legend has it, an ancient Egyptian tribe crossed the Atlantic in search of lobster and good times. Arriving in Maine, they erected a tribute to their ancestral home in the form of a pyramid. Inside the pyramid you will find these mysterious nomads spared no expense recreating the authentic aesthetic of Giza . Archeologists were mystified to find that these travellers added solar power, a tv with netflix and the usual apps, a kitchenette and outdoor shower. A comfy double size bed is found in one corner while a bistro table makes a great place to have a feast or get some work done. A short walk to the river reveals a great fishing, kayaking and swim spot. Egyptians soon learned that swimming meant carefully wading into the water and finding the perfect rock to sit on and drink fermented yummies. The always perfect water is always warm yet refreshing. Nearby, the 95 diner is a great casual spot for breakfast or lunch and the Handystop has great pizzas/subs or grab some fantastic meats and veggies and use the large weber grill outside the pyramid for bbq-ing.

Weekend Trip to 100 Mile Wilderness Cabin
This was our second visit to Paul's cabin and did not disappoint again. Paul made sure there was enough water and wood to last our stay. There is now a flushing toilet outside which was a nice treat. There are many fantastic walking trails close by including the Appalachian Trail. This time round we spent time at North Pond and Juniper Knee Pond and hiked 4ish hour to Little Wilson Falls (there and back and time at the falls).

Weekend Trip to Evergreen Conservation Area
I loved staying on Dan’s property. His camp provided everything my group needed for a relaxing fall weekend getaway: spectacular views, accommodating infrastructure, and absolute solitude. You can tell he’s put a lot of thought and energy into the property (and the Hipcamp experience ), which made the entire stay seamless and inviting. We will be back!
Pro Tips: 1) arrive before dark to get your bearings, 2) pack light (it’s a good hike to the lake) and the rocky, rooty trail is not wagon-friendly, 3) Download offline Google maps and give yourself extra time for arrival because it’s way out there and GPS/cell service is spotty at best.

Great spot with beautiful views. I had a nuthatch land on my arm in the morning like Snow White, which was a moment I’ll never forget.
Walk from car wasn’t bad but pack to consider for folks with mobility or lifting abilities.

Such a wonderful campground! We loved the cabin and it had everything we needed. Bathrooms were clean and the store and rec room were there with food supplies, games. Activities and such. The kids loved the jumping pillow and playground. We will definitely be back.

3 nights at Evergreen Conservation Area
This place was absolutely amazing. It is about a quarter mile walk to the lake cabin. We had to make a couple of trips to bring our stuff in. Next time we probably pack a little lighter, or organize items as must have vs nice to have and do an inventory of available items at camp before making a second trip. But honestly, I cannot recommend this place highly enough. Humans loved it, dogs LOVED it. We didn’t see any moose but the loons and eagles were constant entertainment. Can’t wait to go back!

What a gem! 100% hope to be back! Peaceful, quiet, clean and fully stocked! Just bring your clothes and food. Paul provides everything else. Love the location; Monson is a quaint small town with charming people. The flush toilet was a bonus and the shower worked fantastic!

Wow, this place is incredible.
Dan’s provided directions were clear after we lost reception and the drive was beautiful. As chronic over-packers, we were pleasantly surprised by how quick and easy the trail to the cabin was, but once we arrived it truly felt like we were miles away from everything.
We didn’t experience the volume of bugs that another review claimed, but knowing that they typically come with the territory when one is camping in the woods, we brought repellent and had no issues at all.
I can’t say enough about this place. As lifelong Mainers, we have never heard so many loons. When the sun was out we took advantage of the canoe and nearby trails, but when it rained there was something magical about laying in bed listening to raindrops hit the roof and feeling the breeze coming through the screens. On that note, we brought our own sleeping pad but the ones provided were very comfortable.
This place is special and the only negative was that we eventually had to leave! We miss it already and we hope to be back very soon. Thank you for sharing this place, Dan!

Stayed for 5 days, and had such a wonderful experience! It was private, serene, beautiful, and all around magical! We also greatly appreciated the cleanliness of the area! The cabins were cozy, and the mattresses on the bed made sleeping very comfortable. The kayaks and canoe were in great shape! Dan was great at communicating when we had any questions. Couldn’t recommend enough!

Nice campground, sites are quite spacious and the water is so clean and clear.
we camped last year in our 23 ft travel trailer and enjoyed kayaking along the shore, some nice little islets to paddle to and take a dip from their small gravel beaches. the pit toilets were a bit nasty/smelly and the one central bathhouse/toilet is quite a bit away from either camping loop. really nice walking trail along water saw mink running along the shore. the walk in tent sites along the shore are incredibly nice!

Last minute find, and couldn't of asked for anything better. beautiful views of mountains, lakes,. Stary nights,. I'm so over impressed with this campground.

Some nice trails in the area if you don't mind driving. Moosehead Lake is huge and very windy so I would suggest paddling on some of the smaller, surrounding bodies of water.
