On the upper Bad River, I have a special location that I'd like to share for others to enjoy.
I was fortunate to acquire this land 20 years ago and now that I have retired from the United States Air Force, I can dedicate time to create peaceful campsites along the river.
This land was originally railroad property as the railroad companies bought much land in the late 1800's to have options to place their railroads.
There is still a railroad track nearby but it has been unused since 2015 and it makes a nice hiking path along the river for many miles to the north into the national forest.
There are 3 waterfalls nearby and I will have many signs leading to the waterfalls.
There are 4 total campsites on the property, 1 site you can drive to (Eagle Pines), and 3 tent sites that require 1/8 mile hike to 2 sites, and a 1/4 mile hike to the other hike-in site.
There is no leash required for good pups. If your pup is aggressive with other dogs or people please leash them when on the hiking trails. If your pups would stay in your campsite no leash is required. Other campers may be hiking past your campsite on the trails that is still over 100 feet away from others campsites. You may run into others on the trails where others dogs may not be leashed. If your dog is aggressive to other dogs even if yours is on leash if you can’t control them please muzzle them.

• Open a window or crack the door slightly while cooking for ventilation.
• After each use, make sure both the stove and the propane tank located outside the yurt are completely turned off.
• Never use the stove to heat the yurt.

Also known as the Hershey Homestead, our property is home to what we like to call the funny farm. We have lots of kids and all of them are involved in 4h so that means we have lots of animals. Chickens, ducks, geese, peacocks, goats, sheep, pigs, beef, and horses each have a home here as well as dogs and cats. It's rarely quiet but the chorus of sounds you hear can be an interesting mix of the mating calls of the peacocks to the mooing of the cows to the howls of coyotes at night. (And maybe some of our seven kids playing outside ).
As a camper on our property, you are welcome to explore the homestead at your leisure and take in the sights and smells of the farm. We also have several ponds that bring in an array of wildlife that can be great for bird watching or maybe even catching a few bluegills. We have a new couple of bald eagles that built a nest in a towering white pine along the shore of the big pond, providing opportunities for eagle sightings and photography. There are multiple trails throughout the property available for hiking as well
We are a 1/4 mile from the lake of Shell Lake which has one of the nicest public beaches in northern WI and there are lots of eating and shopping options within a short distance in all directions.
We like to say that we live in the country with the convenience of city amenities only a hop skip and a jump away.

Tucked away yet easy to access, this one-of-a-kind retreat offers total seclusion with no neighbors in sight. You’ll have the entire 30 acres to yourself, surrounded by wild, untouched woods. Spend your days relaxing around the campfire, exploring the beautiful Penokee Mountain area, and soaking in the peace of the Northwoods.
Adventure on the property:
A private trail leads about a half-mile (roughly 30-minute round-trip hike) to Happy Creek Flowage, a peaceful 10-acre lake. The trail is hilly and rugged—true Northwoods terrain—but well worth it. A paddle boat is waiting for calm floats on the water. ATVs and side-by-sides can also use the trail for quicker access. We’re working on installing a dock, but until then, plan to wear high boots or get your feet wet reaching the boat. The lake has no public access, so it’s all yours! Local DNR folks say there may be trout in the lake—we’re looking forward to confirming that this summer.

There’s plenty of space to set up your camper or tent on the gravel pad, or you can meander down the cleared path to the river’s edge, where you’ll find your own private park complete with a fire ring, picnic table, two tent platforms (10'x12' each) and breathtaking views of the flowing river. Note: the river camping area is approximately 150 yards down a walking path.
The flat and level gravel RV/parking pad offers both 30- and 50-amp service and accommodates campers up to approximately 20 feet in length, with pull-in access (not a pull-through site). Water is available from our new well on the property. The gravel pad is about 60 feet in diameter. A full-size truck (F150) with a 20' trailer should be able to pull in and fully turn around into position on the pad.
There are multiple fishing and recreation lakes within a 30 minute drive, hundreds of miles of nearby ATV/UTV trails to explore, and many mountain bike trailheads are only about 30 miles from this location as well.

We loved our stay at Dean's spot, and so did our dog!! Dean is a great host and leaves very clear instructions for the property and signage on where the sites are as well as marked trails that lead to some falls along the river. We hiked about 3 miles one-way on the railroad tracks that led to a beautiful rocky area with falls. The canoe is a plus for a peaceful ride down the river. This campsite is clean, well-maintained, and fairly private from the world around you, which we absolutely loved! This was the perfect time of year to come with all the trees changing color for fall!

As a battle-hardened camper, the distance of the hike in was a breeze for my group and I. The trail can be difficult, but I actually enjoyed the hike. During the first two days, we explored the waterfalls around the area and didn’t get a chance to explore Dean’s land. On the third day, however, we finally had the opportunity to explore it.
Compared to Copper Falls and the other well-known waterfalls in the area, which offer some great views, Dean’s land was a completely different experience. We were able to get right into the river, swim, fish, and simply enjoy the surroundings. Honestly, we enjoyed our time at Dean’s land much more than visiting the more well-known falls in the area.

Dean was a wonderful Host! He was very communicative and kept us informed every step of the way. We loved camping at his site and our dog loved it too! We will for sure be back next summer!

It was a nice get away. The bugs were fair. It wasn't too bad of a walk in but Im glad we didn't have the kids and all their extra things. The river was low so wasn't able to go very far in the canoe. The first night we walked the trail to the falls and were only able to find the first little one. Trails were a bit overgrown and towards the end unclear. I used the maps on this app to see if I could find my way but didnt want to feel like I was walking aimlessly and unable to find my way back as it was getting dark so I gave up. Second day we made our way over to potato falls and wished we brought our swim gear, can definitely spend a whole day there and its about 30 min away. It was also a short drive to copper falls state park for some additional hiking.
We brought firewood with us and made a few trips to the parking lot and back. If you have a little chainsaw or skill saw with a couple batteries.
Lots of frogs my dog loved hunting in the swampy area by our camp that would hop through the site at night.

This is exactly what I was hoping to find when I signed up with HipCamp! This camp is so chill. Off the beaten pass but has strong WiFi and easy access to electricity. The grounds are lovely, with a fabulous campfire and lot of firewood available. Caleb, the host, couldn't have been nicer. Stays to himself but is available for any questions. Great guy and great spot!

The site was clean and spacious, and the full hookups were well maintained and much appreciated. The views of the lake were outstanding. Spending mornings on the dock with a coffee and nights around the campfire were a favorite. There are neighboring homes visible, much like you'd find at a lake house, but the neighbors and the lake were quiet even over an August weekend. The driveway was long and deeply wooded on each side, making for a nice place to walk my dogs. The spot also made a great basecamp for Duluth, Lake Superior, and Amnicon Falls and paddling the river.
