The best camping in Huckleberry Ridge Conservation Area, MO guide

Overview

About

Located just north of Missouri’s border with Northwest Arkansas, Huckleberry Ridge Conservation Area, formerly known as Huckleberry Ridge State Forest, is a 2,106-acre plot of public land. Visitors will find 17 miles of trails meandering through the heavy forests. Hiking, biking, and horseback riding are allowed. Visitors can venture south to find Northwest Arkansas’s cultural and recreational mecca, spreading across the towns of Bentonville, Rogers, and Fayetteville. The region is a hotspot for mountain biking enthusiasts, thanks to the many designated trails.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for solitude: Huckleberry Ridge Conservation Area offers seven primitive camping sites in an open meadow.
  • Best for anglers: Missouri’s nearby Roaring River State Park Campground attracts tent campers and RVers for trout fishing in a scenic Ozarks river.
  • Best for lake lovers: Arkansas’s Prairie Creek Campground, operated by the Army Corps of Engineers, is on the shores of Beaver Lake, which is renowned for its clear waters.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  • The campsites at Huckleberry Ridge are free and first-come-first-serve, with no reservations available.
  • The sites are not developed for all types of vehicles. Some may have trouble reaching them.
  • Missouri State Park campgrounds are reservable 12 months in advance.
  • Reservations for Missouri State Parks may be made online or by phone.
  • Roaring River State Park is popular, especially on weekends and holidays.
  • Prairie Creek Campground has a 2-night minimum stay on weekends and a 3-night minimum on holidays.
  • Reservations for the Army Corps of Engineers parks may be made online or by phone 12 months in advance.

When to go

Summer in the Ozarks is generally hot and humid. Campers need to be able to handle the heat. Temperatures begin to significantly fall off in late September as fall overtakes the region, giving the woodlands a paint job. Winter brings freezing temperatures and occasional frozen precipitation. As spring emerges in March and April, temperatures warm, wildflowers bloom, and the leaves fill in on the trees.

Know before you go

  • When temperatures are warm, mosquitoes, ticks, and chiggers flourish in this natural landscape.
  • ATV use is not allowed.
  • The nearby Elk River is a hotspot for kayaking and canoeing.
