This land was homesteaded by my great grandparents in 1900 as part of the Homestead Act of 1862. After losing my store to fire in 2013, I took the leap, and decided to open the farm to the public. I have a menagerie of animals, many rescued or adopted, that love all the attention. My friends' kids love camping in the pasture with the animals and when I saw an ad for Hipcamp, I thought maybe others would want the experience, too!Learn more about this land:Yoga with goats meets camping with alpacas! We offer camping in the small animal pasture of our family petting farm. (We also offer campsites away from the critters if your not too sure about sharing your space with livestock!). We really enjoyed our stay on Susan's land! The site is right on the water with a small dock and easy access for a kayak or canoe. We spent a good amount of time fishing from our kayaks and had great luck catching large bass and northern pike. We easily fit 2 vehicles and found 2 good flat spots for our rents (with plenty of room to spare). The fire pit and included wood made the chilly nights pleasant and the stars were beautiful. We did not make use of the sauna but it looked clean and serviceable (also smelled great!). The only real downside was the pit toilet, it could use a little attention and having woodchips available would have helped. That said, it wasn't terrible and it is a pit toilet after all. The site is fairly private but note there are neighbors across the treeline on both sides. They didn't detract from our weekend at all, just note it wasn't completely secluded. Overall I would highly recommend staying here, we will definitely be back!

I have been here three times in the last four years... Personally I find campsite 21 to be the best out of the whole bunch because it is high off the lake but also has a private stair and a rock dock down at lake access.
There are five vault toilets at the campground and two spots to get water but note that these are turned off and locked when the campground is closed for the season.
New as of 2020 is the locking cattle gates that keep you from getting to the campsites out of season, too... something I hope the USFS will explain to me because even out of season USFS campsites are supposed to be usable.
I will post photos of each campsite when I have a chance.

Owner refused to check the pay box for our payment!!! Instead he called the police after we left. We got pulled over leaving the campground because the owner said we did not pay. Our payment was in the drop box the whole time!!! The officer told him to go check the pay box and there was our money!!! Worst experience I’ve ever had camping. Do not recommend to anyone.

This was the perfect place to stay before entering the boundary waters. It is a beautiful site and gave us the perfect chance to meet up and get organized before an early entry into the BWCA.

A perfect place for a weekend, month or season of camping. Lovely, quite private sites!! By far the cleanest bathrooms (pit toilets) we've ever had the privilege of using at a campground!!

I actually camped on Knife Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It was one of the best experiences in my life since we performed geological mapping by canoe. We dove for, cooked, and ate fresh water clams, witnessed bald eagles and seagulls fighting over food, portaged into some of the least-visited lakes in the area and came out of it with a published geological map!

Very nice private, large sites. The lake is a short walk from the sites, and so is the outhouse. The lake is absolutely beautiful, great for canoeing.

The campsites are a good size. We stayed in site one, which was not right on the lake, but very private. You can hear the train at night, which startled me awake, but the campground is very quiet otherwise.

We camped in site #3 this past weekend, and it was a remote and primitive site which was exactly what we were looking for. While you are somewhat near your neighbors, there is foliage and trees that block sound, vision, etc. Stream was beautiful/peaceful!

A great first time Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) trip would be to stay at Sawbill and take a day trip on the Kelso Loop (you can even rent gear from an outfitter right there). One of my favorite places on earth.

Fantastic campground with excellent swimming at the edge of the BWCAW. Come in July/August and find thousands of wild blueberries right in your campsite.
