wentz family farm

2 sites · RVs, Tents100 acres · Fort Morgan, CO
This property has been in my family since 1900. It is still a working farm/ranch but we are looking to let a select few others enjoy our property. My grandfather built the lake with a d9 cat bulldozer in the 50's and we are just completing a sediment clean out and refurbishment of the lake. All of the trees were planted by my great grandfather and they afford lots of wildlife cover; wild turkeys, raccoons, skunks, squirrels, etc. The area we selected for camping is in a bowl so you have good privacy. The lake is stocked for fishing and because its private, no license is needed. The fishing hole and swimming hole are separate from the main lake and offer cheaper accommodations. We limit ourselves to 2 campsites to the 100 acres, so there is plenty of privacy. There is some road noise and smell from the local dairy that is about 1/2 mile away if the wind is right. Simple private camp spot - there is a swimming/fishing hole with dock and ladder. There is a year round creek and some small islands that can be explored. Fire pit, portapotty and propane grill are available. Potable water and sewage dump is available at main residence but not at camp site. This is designed to be a family friendly area that's great for younger kids. Area is also a pasture so cows and cow patties could be encountered and wild deer and turkey are around. If you have a larger family than 4 remember hipcamps policy is that younger children do not count towards the limit.

Cottonwood Tree Camp

2 sites · RVs, Tents5 acres · Brush, CO
When the farm house was built in 1909, the cabin was already here. We bought the weed patch with the intention of starting a flower farm. It was a cattle feed lot years ago and the soil should be very fertile. We'll use the composted manure in the Spring. Learn more about this land: Farm land off I-76 and Hwy 6. Set up camp under old cottonwood trees, between the wild plums and spruce trees. 31267 Road U, Brush CO 80723. Prewitt Reservoir and Elliot State Recreational Area nearby. Sunsets and sunrises are spectacular. See the stars at night. Wake up to the rooster's crow. We have alfalfa and corn to the north and grasslands to the south. Outhouse/port-o-potty is available. The train adds to the country feel. Irrigation ditch runs at least two days a week. Our chickens are friendly and used to dogs. Site #1 is better for small vehicles and tent camping. It is more protected. Site #2 is better for large RVs and trailers. NEW 9 hole disc golf course (the Octagon) on 5 acres. Located down the road from nationally recognized Optimist course in Ft Morgan CO.

The best camping near Jackson Lake State Park guide

Overview

About

Often referred to as an “oasis in the plains,” Jackson Lake draws visitors with one of the largest reservoirs in Colorado, perfect for swimming, boating, sailboarding, jet skiing, and water skiing. Anglers can go fishing year-round—winter ice fishing is a must-try. There’s plenty to do on land too, including hiking and biking trails, OHV trails, and educational programs, while the location along the Central Flyway attracts bird-watchers and hunters. Stay overnight to appreciate the park’s International Dark Sky Park status—you’ll find 251 campsites to choose from, including RV sites, tent sites, and a group campground, all with picnic tables and fire rings.

Notable campgrounds

  • Best for boaters: The Pelican Campground is the closest to the marina and boat ramp.
  • Best for swimming and entertainment: The Cove Campground is located right by the west swim beach and amphitheater.
  • Best for large RVs: The Lakeside Campground can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet and offers 20-, 30-, and 50-amp electric hookups.

Tips for snagging a campsite

  1. All campsites require a reservation. Make a reservation as soon as you know your dates during peak season—they can be booked up to six months in advance.
  2. If your plans are flexible, try to visit the year-round park during the week, during non-holiday periods, or in winter for the easiest time securing a spot.
  3. Seasonal opening and closing dates vary by campground. The Cove, Pelican, and Lakeside campgrounds are open year-round.

When to go

Peak season is from April to early September. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, programs are available on Friday and Saturday evenings at the amphitheater. Boating is allowed from when the ice has melted to October 31, while the lake usually freezes from November to mid-February for ice fishing and ice skating. Showers and flush toilets are winterized during the off-season (fall, winter, and early spring), though vault toilets are still available. Hunting is permitted from the Tuesday after Labor Day to the Thursday before Memorial Day.

Know before you go

  • Boat, jet skis, and other water sport equipment rentals are available from the Shoreline Marina.
  • Swimming is permitted in designated swimming zones only, and no lifeguards are on duty.
  • Fishing licenses are required for those over age 16.
  • Hunting is permitted at two designated areas within the park, using shotguns with birdshot and bow and arrow only.
  • There is one accessible campsite (#35) at the Lakeside Campground.
  • Bring bug repellent—mosquitos can be an issue here.
  • Fires are only permitted in provided fire pits. Do not collect firewood or bring firewood from another state.
