After the second time I drove all the way to Joshua Tree National Park and found it to be FULL, I decided to buy a little land so I can have a place to camp on. In the future, I would love to slightly develop it, but for now it's totally primitive. Just raw nature. Enjoy your stay. :)  Learn more about this land:This is a very primitive campsite. FIRES ARE NOT ALLOWED !MUST BRING YOUR OWN PORTABLE TOILETThere's a road that leads to a flat pad where you can park your car, and a wind breaker fence.it is perfect for sleeping in your car when you cannot find a spot in the park (Joshua Tree national park is very often full). The land is not far from the entrance (about 15 minutes drive)You will need to bring your own little table and chairs + whatever else you wish to have there. There is no bathroom or trash on the land. Please pack everything back out with you and discard once you reach a public trash. You will enjoy over 2 acres of privacy, endless views, starry skies complete with sunrise and sunset :)    (The city allows us to camp on our private vacant land only 4 nights a month, and of course does not allow short term rentals. For that reason a suggested donation of $25 per night is all that we are asking from our hipcamp community to help keep the space maintained :)

Private 40 Acre Primitive Camp

12mi from Hall of Horrors · 2 sites · Tents, RVs · Joshua Tree, CA
**PLAN TO ARRIVE BEFORE DARK UNLESS YOU KNOW YOUR WAY AROUND THE DESERT.** EXPERIENCED ADVENTURERS AND THEIR DOGGIE COMPANIONS ONLY! THIS IS THE WILD WEST. THERE ARE NO LIGHTED PATHS. THIS IS A REMOTE CAMPSITE. THE IDEA IS TO GET OUT INTO NATURE WITHOUT LIGHT POLLUTION! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not book this campground if you have trouble reading maps and/or cutting and pasting GPS coordinates into google maps or equivalent. We'd LOVE to host you, but we just find being upfront about this property is best for all of us. NO TOILETS, NO WATER, NO ELECTRIC.... just YOU in all your magnificence, a beautiful wooden deck, a stone fire place, large wooden picnic table and maybe your family, friends and doggie pals. Mar and I visited 44 properties when deciding on land to buy in Joshua Tree in 2020. This one was hands down the most beautiful. We love the mixture of privacy, access to magnificent hiking and wildlife interactions... all while remaining with good cell coverage and close to downtown JT and the national park! Learn more about this land: Primitive camping at the base of Copper Mountain in Joshua Tree, California. Total Seclusion: Private 40 acres wilderness camping and/or event space. YOU ARE RENTING THE ENTIRE PROPERTY. OFF-LEASH ANIMAL FRIENDLY! We love your animal companions and understand they are family. They do not need to be leashed on our property... they can roam FREE! (Just please pick up after them so we can keep this policy in place!) If you want privacy, this is your (very large) spot. You will have 40 acres to enjoy. Bordering the 40 acres, our “neighbors” are three large empty lots and government land with no structures. We are located at the base of Copper Mountain.  The soil here is very special. It has a magical mixture of inorganic materials, like crystals and metals, that have eroded down from Copper Mountain, mixed in a matrix of organic material, like grasses that have been made into a fine powder. The result is a natural landscape of orgone generating dirt. You can feel the energy here. There are plenty of dirt roads around the property for casual strolls and mountain biking... or take a short climb up the sandy incline at the back of the property and panoramic views of Joshua Tree await. This listing is not for the inexperienced camper! Please pack in, pack out all your trash and leave no trace besides footsteps. You will have access to a 12 foot (!!) handcrafted solid wood picnic table, handmade stone fire ring and brand new 24x12 foot wooden deck. VERY IMPORTANT: You must have a self-contained toilet system. Please pack out all your own waste. You will also need to bring your own WATER. Thank you!  4-wheel drive highly recommended but regular cars, RVs, Airstreams have previously gotten to PRIVATE 40 by taking it slow and easy with extra care. If you do get stuck (it NEVER happened before, but just in case)... you will need to call your own towing company. So please be mindful and understand your vehicle's limits. Wake at dawn to see the jackrabbits and listen to the coyotes howl as you fall asleep. Baby quail all in a line may entertain you. The starry nights are glorious here with clear skies most of the time and a lot less light pollution in the desert compared to the cities. Also, we have no surrounding street lamps! Most will find they have good cell service at our location. #NoPowerLines at our property makes for a real wilderness feel, even though we are very close to nearby points of interest. We are VERY centrally located for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding areas.  Distances from PRIVATE 40 Acre Camp by car:  Rt. 62: 8 minute drive Downtown Joshua Tree/Saturday Farmers Market: 11 minutes Joshua Tree National Park (Joshua Tree entrance): 19 mins Downtown Twentynine Palms: 18 mins Joshua Tree National Park (Twentynine Palms entrance): 23 mins Indian Cove: 16 mins PioneerTown: 29 mins Remember, this is the desert and conditions change rapidly. Please take a look at the local forecast and also plan for unexpected weather events. Strong winds, high temps, low temps... anything is possible out here in the wilderness. When you park your vehicle, we recommend using it as a wind break when possible. Noise disclosures: sometimes, especially on weekends, you may hear music and party noise from the nearby Bureau of Land Management lands. There is also a military base on the other side of mountain and you may hear them firing. Enjoy the fun from the privacy PRIVATE 40 Camp. We, Amanda and Mario, and our property manager, the delightful Liv, are so happy to be your hosts. Yoga retreats and musical events may be possible. Please inquire.

"Apocalypse Wow"- Tent Site

94%
(18)
14mi from Hall of Horrors · 2 sites · Tents, RVs · Twentynine Palms, CA
This open camp tent area is owned by (and was/is built by) the former HGTV host of the show "Tiny House Builders". The site also houses a "wooden tent" or micro glamping pod named "The Little Lantern" (a second listing) that is fun to check out, take pix of, store gear in- the structures serve as windbreaks and shade walls for tent campers and you can hang out on the benches near them, use their fire pits, and so on. The owner is also the author of several design and budget-build/reuse books (the bestseller "Micro Shelters" and others). Decades back this land was the site of an old RV park, so we've been in the long process of cleaning it up and removing junk from some corners of the site- but a bit still remains (its NOT pristine- still in the works). As a result you'll find some cool, weird, and unusual detritus and salvage out here (but not so much close to the camp spots)- old car parts, industrial knobs and dials- feel free to explore. Camp at your own risk though if you wander off to check this stuff out. The immediate camping area is cleared/clean. This has made it a favorite spot for junk collectors and photographers (we've found everything from old coins, to actual silver, cool rocks/geodes, and vintage car parts). This place would also make for a great spot for video or fashion shoots (which aren't allowed unless you seek separate permission from us!). Its a dirt site, but easy to get into, easy to pull into and turn around in (even with an RV), and you basically have about 5 acres all to yourself in most cases. There is one other camp site on the property (two total- the little lantern, and the van area for tenting- they are separate and spread out). Note: As I'm not sure of the current hip camp/country standings (new vague rules), I had removed this listing/put it on "hold", but it keeps going live/not adjusting- for that reason I'm just going to keep it live and allow people to book/stay until things are figured out by hip camp (so as not to inconvenience anyone).

The best camping near Hall of Horrors, CA guide

Overview

About

The Hall of Horrors in Joshua Tree National Park is widely known as one of the best hikes in this area famous for its hiking and camping. This relatively short hike weaves itself around tall stacks of boulders that erupt from the desert landscape and hide a stunning secret within their many nooks and crannies. While the nearby Slot Canyon may be difficult to find, it is a necessary addition to your hike. Tucked away in the towering boulders is a small sliver of a path that winds its way into the boulder field offering a unique photo opportunity for any explorer that manages to spot the entrance.

When to go

The ideal time to visit the Hall of Horrors is during the cooler months from October to April, when the desert climate is more forgiving. Summer visits are possible but expect intense heat. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best light for climbers and photographers, while avoiding the midday sun.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit, as temperatures can be extreme in the desert environment.
  • Bring plenty of water and sun protection, including hats and sunscreen, to stay hydrated and shielded from the sun.
  • Wear appropriate footwear for navigating rocky terrain and exploring the boulder-strewn landscape.
  • Be mindful of the delicate desert ecosystem and practice Leave No Trace principles to preserve the park's natural beauty.
  • Visitor centers can provide up-to-date information on park conditions and any potential closures or restrictions.
