As the days heat up, the river begins to slow and warms up to a comfortable yet refreshing temperature. New beaches emerge, just waiting to be explored. In late summer, early fall, there is a feeling of calm. The river slows significantly but still feels amazing to sit in. You can hear its gentle flow and soothing sound as it trickles over the rocks. This is a great time time to explore the river as it is mostly shallow with some swim holes. Most of the time it is very quiet. There is another camp down stream owned by a wonderful family. They are here a couple times per week, and also rent their camp. You may hear them having fun and engaging in target practice. The river is a shared space but it is rare to see anyone else. Noise travels in the canyon so you may hear occasional barking or other vehicles. Hearing coyotes sing at night is very common. The rarely seen wildlife includes rattle snakes, bob cats, coyotes, fox, mountain lions and bears. Don't worry, our animal friends like to keep their distance. Hope to see you soon! Sharing my life and property with rescued animals has become a full time job full of joy and lessons learned. What great teachers they are. I began to share the experiences with my animals by offering a unique farm tour called coffee with Critters and I find that I really enjoy sharing this lifestyle with like minded folk. If you love animals and want to camp near them please join me. Learn more about this land: Your campsite will be nestled among animal enclosures, listen to the munching of hay or the snorting of the horse. Your stay will include a modified animal tour and you can engage with horse, goats, rabbits, chickens, ducks and more... dogs and cats of course ;). I have a couple of spots but I would be flexible regarding campsite. My toilet is a compost toilet.  The outside shower has been upgraded with privacy curtains etc following suggetions from previous campers ;) I have a million $$ view and a modest house. My house is about 45 minutes from the Yosemite park entrance and it's an easy commute back/forth. Flowering vines cover my outdoor porches where we have big dinners when Wwoofers or Couchsurfers are in residence. The property is home to many animals, horse, goats, pigs, chickens, peacocks, rabbits, guinea pigs - dogs & cats - of course! :-) . The roosters wake us up pretty early so fair warning about that - but I love living with them and it makes the property so much more friendly with all the critters. My house is pet friendly and yours are welcome if they are 1. Fixed, 2. Are social and friendly with my pets, 3. Will not chase the cats and chickens. I can babysit your pups if you go to the park - provided they are compliant with rules above. I work from home. There are loads of trails nearby and 2 pretty ponds and plenty of wildlife, deer, turkeys and more. The property is rolling hills however there are plenty of flat areas for tents. NO FIRES PERMITTED ANYWHERE ON MY PROPERTY APRIL-OCTOBER - non negotiable.

Access to Yosemite via 120 takes 1 hour , Groveland 10 minutes, and Coulterville 5 minutes. You’ll find cows, goats, chickens, llamas and our two beloved livestock dogs on the property. Update may 7 2026: after the last major storm, a large amount of red sand washed into the pond area, making the water currently much shallower than usual. The area can still be enjoyed, especially by small children, but swimming conditions are limited compared to before.

Overall was a great experience! Felt very private with great views. We went in July so A-frame would heat up tremendously during the day, luckily would cool down at night though and they provide a fan (along with battery for charging devices). We kept our food in a large sealed bin but still struggled a little with ants - just something for future campers to be aware of. It’s less than 20 mins from park entrance but it is about 1 hour to Yosemite valley. There is a general store less than 10 mins away which is convenient. There are great hikes in the area without needing to go into Yosemite too. Overall would recommend the stay if you enjoy camping but are looking for an experience one step up!

Weekend Trip to Camp with Critters

As animal lovers my girlfriend and I loved our stay at critter camp! Ruth was a wonderful and accommodating host, and especially after our previous night camping in our own tent, having a great tent already beautifully set up was a load off our shoulders (not to mention having an actual showerhead to rinse off under, it made me seriously consider setting up my own outdoor shower at home). As animal and especially dog lovers we both got a kick out of Ruth’s friendly canines stopping by for pets as we started settling in, and we also enjoyed seeing the cats on patrol and strolling around the pig, chicken/duck/turkey, and goat enclosures in the morning before we left. If we didn’t have to leave so soon it would have been great to have the full tour experience. There’s a great view of the stars from Ruth’s hill, and although there were other guests there at the same time, the sites are much further apart than at your standard campsite. And the animals are far enough from the animal enclosures that there’s no “farm smell” at camp, but close enough to stroll over when you want to. I will say the the roosters did as expected in the morning, but if your objective is beating the crowds at Yosemite, you really don’t even need to bother with setting an artificial alarm when you’ve got a natural one built right into the experience. If you get up when they do you’ve got a great chance of finding parking at Curry Village! Ruth’s camp is on the short list for our next Yosemite trip!

3 nights at Nolla A-Frames Near Yosemite

We loved staying at Liza and Tom’s cabin! It was very convenient when driving to the park, and it was a huge step up from tent camping. My (now) fiancé actually booked this for us so he could propose in the park! It was a great getaway for the two of us. An extra bonus were the *HOT* showers and clean bathrooms across the street at Sierra Mac. Only downside was the porta potty wasn’t well serviced, so we opted not to use it. Overall, we’d definitely come back!

We loved the depth of the silence as we sat outside each morning having breakfast in the early sunlight. Looking at the sky and distant hills while stretched out in the cabin's bed is truly wonderful with the floor-to-ceiling glass triangle of the A-frame cabin.

The cabin was peaceful, private, and had a wonderful view for sunrise and stargazing! Liza and Tom gave very detailed directions that we found helpful for navigating to the cabin in the dark. We also really appreciated the charging cords and fan they provided, and had a very comfortable stay!

Great spot if you’re headed into Yosemite! About 20-30 minutes from the gate with a Valero gas station and general store on the way in, another 30-40 minutes from there into Yosemite valley. The showers are a couples minutes before the site. I’d leave a pin if you’ll be coming back after dark since the sites a little hidden.

Weekend Trip to Willow Belle Ranch

Great host. She took her time to introduce us to this beautiful place and also suggested above a quite creek in their property. We had a great evening at the creek and a fantastic stay at the camper. Britany was very thoughtful about arranging picnic tables under a canopy with dimmable string lights which made our evening beautiful. She genuinely cares for a good experience for her guests . Love to visit again in future and spend more time in this calm environment.

3 nights at Nolla A-Frames Near Yosemite

We had a lovely stay at Liza and Tom's A-frame cabin. The views, especially at night, were beautiful and calming. The proximity to the Yosemite gate was great and made getting an early parking spot easier. The set-up with the sister site for showers was also very easy and really not inconvenient. The mats for sleeping were a bit on the thinner side, so I'd recommend bringing additional mats if you prefer a plush mattress, but it worked for us. Overall, I'd recommend this camp spot to others looking for a relaxing camping experience that's more elevated than just a tent!
