Mariposa EcoVillage – Primitive Camping on the Plains Mariposa is a nonprofit land trust focused on sustainable development and community connection with nature. Founded in the 1990s, the land was originally a quarry used for caliche mining and soil grading. Today it offers a quiet place to camp, enjoy the wide views of the Texas Panhandle, and experience the peaceful open landscape. Camping at Mariposa provides a simple outdoor experience with plenty of space and privacy. Visitors can enjoy beautiful sunsets, expansive plains views, and a unique landscape shaped by its quarry history. Camping Options We currently offer primitive camping for RVs, vans, self-contained rigs, and tent campers. • There are no hookups available at this time. • Primitive camping areas are spread out across the property for privacy and quiet. • Guests are welcome to choose a comfortable area to set up within the designated camping space. Property Access Mariposa is located within a gated community, and access to the property requires entry through the gate. After booking, please call or text 806-759-1354 when you arrive, and someone will meet you at the gate and guide you into the camping area. Amenities • Potable well water access • Dumpster available for trash disposal Please plan accordingly as this is a primitive camping experience. Explore the Property Guests are welcome to walk the surrounding land and enjoy the open environment. The elevated areas of the property offer beautiful views of the plains and unique features from the land’s former quarry use. Travel Note There is currently construction on Loop 335 near the property, so travel routes may vary depending on the time of your visit. This is a primitive camping area located on the west side of our property, offering a quiet and flexible setup for guests who enjoy a more natural, off-grid experience. Guests can choose their own spot within the designated camping area, allowing for plenty of space and privacy. The terrain is natural dirt and open land with scattered vegetation, giving it a peaceful and wide-open feel. Access is by dirt road. Guests will enter through the main gate near the Visitor Center and follow the road west past the buildings. Continue up and over a small hill (the road can be a bit bumpy, so please drive slowly), and follow it all the way to the end where the camping area is located. This is primitive camping, so there are no water hookups or washing facilities at the campsite. However, guests do have access to bathrooms at the Visitor Center only when the Visitors Center is open. Please call 807-759-1354 to ask when Visitor Center will be open. This is a great option for those looking to unplug, spread out, and enjoy a quiet, simple camping experience.

Primitive Glamping Tent Retreat

This glamping tent is located on the west side of our property, tucked away for a quiet and private camping experience. Guests will have a designated tent setup with space to relax and enjoy the surrounding views and open land. While you may see other areas of the property in the distance, this site offers a peaceful and spread-out feel. Access to the site is by dirt road. Guests will enter through the main gate pass the Visitor Center and follow the road west past the buildings. The road includes a small hill and can be a bit bumpy, so we recommend driving slowly. This is a semi-primitive glamping experience. The tent is set up for convenience and comfort, but the property itself is still being developed. There is no running water or washing station or bathroom at the campsite. Guests do have access to bathrooms located at the Visitor Center, which is kept open at certain points during the day. Please message 806-759-1354 if you would like to speak to someone about times the Visitor Center will be open! This is a great spot to unplug, enjoy the quiet, and experience a more natural setting while still having a few added comforts.

This is a primitive RV and van-friendly camping area located on the west side of our property, ideal for guests who are fully self-contained and looking for a quiet, off-grid stay. There are no designated pads or hookups, so guests are welcome to choose a level spot within the camping area that works best for their setup. The terrain is natural dirt with open space, offering flexibility and plenty of room to spread out. There are also additional parking spots available near the Visitor Center for easier access if preferred. Secluded Spots are accessed via dirt road. Guests will enter through the main gate near the Visitor Center and follow the road west past the buildings. Continue up and over a small hill (the road can be a bit bumpy, so please drive slowly), then follow it to the end where the main camping area is located. This is dry camping only—there are no electricity, water, or sewer hookups available. Bathroom Access: Bathrooms are located at the Visitor Center, but are not always open. If you would like access, you will need to call ahead to schedule a time for the building to be opened. 📞 806-759-1354 This site is best suited for vans, campervans, and RVs that are comfortable with off-grid conditions and uneven terrain. There is no dumping waste on this site, will have to find another site to dump after leaving. We are currently working on developing these sites. We do have full time jobs so please be patient in response time. Camp spots are anywhere you feel comfortable but there is a level field behind the dumpster next to the community center(**3rd grey building*). Our RV parking is right next to the community center and can accommodate large rigs. Our tent camping spaces can spread out for added privacy. Come enjoy the beauty of the Texas panhandle at Mariposa!

Site was okay, hard ground for staking and also tent camping. Plan to bring an air pad or a few plushy blankets to pad your bag on the ground. Site directions were okay, was not able to find the restroom and potable water that the description mentioned. Beautiful sunsets/sunrises at this location, and not far from town!

This was a great stop over spot for me since it is so close to the highway. There was a lot of construction on the way getting there, so the Google maps spot sent me to the wrong spot. However the owner was quick to get back to me with correct directions.

It worked for what we needed, a place to rest our head for the night while passing through. It’s essentially a wide open space in someone’s backyard which felt kind of weird. Not so bad since we were the only ones there for the night. I believe it would be much better if you had an RV, but the wind was relentless and the terrible for tenting. The host messaged in a timely manner with the gate code, but did not respond to my other messages or phone call so I’m not even sure we were camped where we were supposed to be set up. No access to bathroom or shower.

5 stars all the way! Perfect for those traveling and needing a quiet and large space. Many roads traverse the property but from experience, I'd go it on foot. Super friendly and extremely helpful caretakers. Keep it clean, it's a beautiful piece of land!

Waking up to a symphony of no less than 6 varities of morning birdsongs was a dream come true. I heard the most amazing song from one bird, by far the best I've ever heard in my life! The birds were happy, they loved both sunset and sunrise. It was very special to share their home, an experience I will never forget. The Land Trust is amazing, untouched and wild, I hope it stays that way. The caretakers were trusting and open, allowing me to fold into the landscape wherever I chose, I was careful to leave no tracks so enjoy.

Such a peaceful and Magical place! I was sad to be there for one short night! Cole was super inviting… the location was great, off the highway but couldn’t hear it. The community bathroom was clean and had what you needed.

Our stay was only for 1 night, so we made it work since we were just passing through. Shower, toilet, and community center were advertised as accommodations. Unfortunately we did not get to use any of those. I would just suggest reaching out before your stay to make sure all the amenities will be available to you.

Good overnight stop that is gated and safe. We were the only ones there and night temp was 55 so comfortable stay. Very quiet and no traffic noise. It is literally dispersed parking around the community center with no trees for shade. Restroom was open but showers closed which was fine. Clear instructions from owners once booked and easy access from I-40. Close to restaurants and just outside of town so you don’t have to deal with traffic. Well worth staying here over the nearby rest stops and picnic areas.

You can park an RV here, on the west side of Amarillo. But would you? It’s kind of in the middle of nowhere, and it has some facilities — a bathroom and a kitchen — but they’re in a building that seems leftover from some sort of failed utopian experiment. Management is extremely casual. (On the plus side, you can get a decent cell signal here.)

After a 7 hr drive from Santa Fe we arrived to find the Community Center was not available. It was 102° at 6:30 pm. So, no shower, kitchen: fridge, cooking equipment, cool space to relax. We headed back into town for more ice and to find a cool place to hang out until dusk. Later the hosts offered us their facility along with tie dying classes but we were already done for the night and we passed. This was our second stay here and you honestly never know what you'll get. A loud barking dog kept us awake most of the night as well.

I didn't stay. It felt not safe. So I drove around and got creeped out and left. I think that the reviews are fake. Every site needs a lot of work to clean up.

There weren't any shaded areas. There wasn't anything to block the wind. The host was VERY gracious and allowed us to stay the night in the clubhouse.

Awesome spot!! Appreciative of the community center during the storm that came through while we were there. It allowed us to cook inside! Would definitely recommend bringing all of your own cooking supplies. Bathroom was fine as well. Water takes a long time to heat, and we found that for the shower, it almost has to stay closer to the off side to heat. We heard coyotes in the night, so just make sure food is locked up per usual with camping.

Nice little place just outside of Amarillo, booked on a whim and I didn’t read the listing correctly. There wasn’t really a water or power hookup. I was able to fill my fresh tank at the community water spigot though. There were also some 120 outlets but I would have had to get the camper pretty close to reach it. Weather was surprisingly cool and breezy so we just boondocked we in the field instead. Was generally quiet throughout the night you can somewhat hear the highway but not too bad. Would definitely visit again.

For those of us who are independent and value open space and solitude, this is perfect. The community center has a kitchen, full bath, and laundry which are available for guest's use. It is an open area with a few places with accessible 110 outlet. Gated entry with code. If you need the comfort of people around you and actual campground atmosphere, you may not enjoy this. On the outskirts of Amarillo, but a short drive into town.

Just what I needed. A safe place to stop and sleep along my long journey. Having a bathroom, shower and kitchen with cookware to cook up a meal was a huge bonus! Of course it could always be better in some way. But it was just right for me and would definitely stay again! Thank you!!
