Chris and Beth met and started dating in Indianapolis in 2009 where both were working on their graduate education. During their first date, Chris announced his goal of developing a vineyard and making wine. As the relationship evolved, Chris worked toward the goal by researching viticulture, attending classes and investigating potential vineyard sites. In summer of 2011, Chris and Beth got married and dove into the wine industry when they purchased a majestic 62 acre property in the foothills of the coastal mountain range in Yamhill County. The property had been an old timber farm that was in bad shape. In 2012, a portion of the property was cleared and planted and the adventure had just begun! The vineyard was planted in 2012, with additional blocks planted each year since. In 2015 they produced our first lots of Pinor Noir and Sauvignon Blanc and have since expanded the wine selection to offer hand-crafted lots of Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Dolcetto, Lagrein and more. These days, Chris manages the day to day operations of the farm and wine production while Beth manages the business. Are you ready to get away to a beautiful vineyard? On our property you will get to camp with awesome views of vineyard, coastal range, and nearly no ambient light at night! Our property is 10-15 minutes west of Carlton, Oregon, nestled in the foothills of the coastal range. We own 62 acres, 17 of which are planted as vineyard. On the property we have our house, a winery, and a tasting room. Be prepared to drive up 2 miles of gravel road with a short but steep hill. You will likely need good skills backing up to get into position. I have 2 spots for RVs and a variety of locations for tent camping.  Please let me know which you will do so that I can plan appropriately.  There are times when I can only fit 1 RV/Trailer, so please include that in your request. We are on a working farm and our camping spots can be in the way of the tractor.  As a result, staying more than 1 night, especially Fri/Sat is tricky. Weeknights are far more flexible because our tasting room is closed and our parking area is available.   Also note, as a working farm and we have crews here nearly everyday to work in the vineyard.  Please be respectful of the crew. Update as we approach harvest: Fall is harvest time in the vineyard!  With this we will be limiting our camping, specifically RVs and trailers.  Normally we can fit 2, but I will be limiting it down to just 1 and only for 1 night at a time.  Please reach out before booking if you are camping in an RV or trailer. Also, the birds become a problem for us in fall.  To help repel them from the vineyard, we use a bird noise maker.  It goes through a series of bird calls to scare them away from the grapes.  I mention it because it is loud in some spots around the property and it goes off regularly from dawn to dusk.  It is usually on for about 6 weeks before harvest. About the winery:  Chris James Cellars is a family owned and operated vineyard and winery that produces unique and interesting wines in Carlton, Oregon. The vineyard was planted in 2012, with additional blocks planted each year since. In 2015 we produced our first lots of Pinor Noir and Sauvignon Blanc and have since expanded our wine selection to offer hand-crafted lots of Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Dolcetto, Lagrein and more. The tasting room is open Friday through Sunday, 12pm-5pm and by appointment.  Please visit our website to schedule a tasting (chrisjamescellars dot com).

Vineyard by day, Stars at night!
Beth summed it up when she greeted us by calling it a “little piece of paradise.” It is so beautiful and calm. We went just to escape the fireworks in town expecting to just be there later in the evenings to sleep. On our second night we went back in the afternoon to spend some more time. We set up our pop up tent for some shade and sat and read and watched the vineyard. It was so relaxing. The dogs loved being able to be off leash. It was a great opportunity for them to flex the recall we’ve been working on in a new environment.

Vineyard by day, Stars at night!
This spot was awesome! 10/10 would recommend (especially if you’re doing winery tours). The views were breathtaking and the host was so welcoming. We watched deer plop around the property as the sunset from a quiet picnic table over full glasses of local wine. My only regret is that I didn’t bring my dog because the hosts welcome them and he would have had a blast.

Vineyard by day, Stars at night!
Very hospitable team as we arrived while the tasting room was open. Use of the deck after hours was awesome and peaceful. It’s a working vineyard so the early morning farm operations were expected but still not disruptive.

Vineyard by day, Stars at night!
The vineyard landscape is breathtaking, rolling hills and lots of different textures of plants and trees. There is a stone parking area to stage a camper near the tasting room that has a large concrete patio that’s partially covered for inclement weather. We also set up a tent on a meadow nearby the camper spot. We checked in on a Sunday late afternoon and enjoyed a robust wine tasting upon arrival also, with an educational verbal tour of the different grape varietals grown on the property. Our dogs had the best time running free on the property which was made possible because the vineyard is enclosed to keep wildlife out. At night the stars were vibrant with a backdrop of owls and frogs making welcomed night sounds. We also saw deer and hawks, and plentiful song birds. Such a delight to stay in the property. We’ll be back!

Simply amazing to hang out and sleep right by the vines and have the dogs roam around free. And the views were incredible.
