Sweetbay Stay

1 site ¡ RV, Tent3 acres ¡ Abbeville, LA
Hello! I'm Matt, and our family includes my girlfriend Olivia, our 6-year-old son, two rescue dogs, and a one-eyed cat. In 2021, we made the exciting decision to sell our home in Lafayette and start living full-time in a camper at our family's countryside site. This beautiful place has been in our family for generations, and we've cherished every moment of our new life, enjoying BBQs, campfires, and breathtaking country sunsets every day. Now, we want to share this peaceful haven with you! You'll find our spot nestled under the shade of majestic live oak trees, with a convenient concrete slab for grilling and a fire ring for making afternoon s'mores and stargazing after the sun sets. We hope you'll love this place as much as we do. Our location is just minutes away from downtown Abbeville, where you can savor authentic Cajun fresh seafood at various restaurants and immerse yourself in frequent local festivals. We're also conveniently located 30 minutes from Lafayette, 16 minutes from Palmetto Island State Park, and just an hour away from great crabbing and fishing at Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge. We can't wait to welcome you here soon!

The best camping near Palmetto Island State Park guide

Overview

About

For an authentic Louisiana outdoors experience, check out Palmetto Island State Park. Named for the ubiquitous presence of palmetto plants which carry over into its architectural elements, the park’s location on the Vermilion River makes it a prime spot for fishing and boating. Several interior lagoons give canoers and kayakers a chance to see native plants and animals up close.

Day-use visitors will want to spend some time at the visitor center complex, which features a water playground and bathhouse. There is also a multi-purpose room that can be rented out for meetings, family reunions, weddings or even your next crawfish boil. Nearby attractions include the Acadian Museum of Erath (honoring the Cajun people of Louisiana) and Jungle Gardens (botanical gardens amongst a 900 year-old statue of Buddha).

When to go

The best time to visit Palmetto Island State Park is during the spring and fall when the weather is mild and the natural beauty is at its peak. Summer months can be hot and humid, while winter brings cooler temperatures that may affect some park activities.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Be aware of park hours, which are typically from 8:30am to 5pm, and plan your activities accordingly.
  • Remember to pack insect repellent, as the park's natural setting is home to various insects.
