Learn more about this land: The property is 125 acres, triangular in shape and bound by low-traffic township roads on two sides and by farmland at the back of the property. We have valleys with three ridges, total elevation is about 300 feet from low point to high point. We have two springs on the property that are the source for a small unnamed creek that feeds into Trout Creek and then the Kickapoo River.  The property has walking paths in the grassy pasture areas in the valley (partially mowed), unmowed trails up and down the hillsides and on the ridges, and a high bluff overlook. We are between the towns of Soldiers Grove and Readstown, 2 miles from the Kickapoo River and US Highway 61 on paved roads.  There are public restrooms with showers a 5 minute drive from site in Soldiers Grove, where there is also an RV dump station. The famous 'Driftless Books' is also found in Viroqua, along with live music on Court Street every other Saturday. We are 22 miles from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and a bit further North, from Ontario WI, one may embark by canoe or kayak, through some of the most stunning landscape to be found in Wisconsin. This area is called The Driftless because it lacks glacial drift, which refers to the deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind had they passed through this part of Southwestern Wisconsin. When glaciers were in surrounding areas, the melt-water sometimes made its way into the Driftless Area and contributed to the formation of the valleys and bluffs which characterize the landscape, which is known for steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and karst geology with caves and spring-fed cold water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region and New England than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions.

We are 6 miles from Ontario, canoeing capital of Wisc , on the Kickapoo River , Wildcat Mountain state park can be seen from our ridge top . Kickapoo Valley Reserve is minute away for hiking adventures . Weekend Trip to Heart of the Driftless

My partner and I loved our stay at the Heart of the Driftless. The directions were clear and simple. We enjoyed the scenery and lots of amazing wildlife. Karen is such a gracious host, we were arriving a little late into the night and she had started a fire for us so the cabin wasn't cold! Thank you for an amazing weekend!

We had an incredible time staying in the red barn! Loved interacting with the turkeys and cows and being so close to them was a real treat. The barn is also on a little hill, which gives you an incredible view of the surrounding area. The barn was very clean and had everything we needed. Truly our favorite stay to date.

Christine and her place were wonderful! So friendly and accommodating and the barn is absolutely adorable! So many sweet details and incredibly clean and comfortable! Shared the back bedroom with my kiddo with no problems and a grandparent stayed in the smaller bedroom and we were all very comfortable! The animals were wonderful and the location and property are absolutely beautiful! The cleanest and nicest port-a-potty I have ever seen! Highly recommend and we just tried some of Christine's Christmas pickles and they are delicious!

I had an absolutely incredible stay at this Hipcamp. It felt like I had been transported to the mountains, not Wisconsin! The views in the driftless region were stunning. I reached out to host Andy in advance, and he graciously let me stay in the fenced dog park area, which featured a crystal-clear spring-fed pond. The trails on the property were amazing, perfect for exploring with my dogs, and the location itself is out of this world. It's right in the heart of Amish country, with Amish horse and buggies riding right past the campsite. Andy was fantastic, welcoming, helpful, and full of great local recommendations. If he was working near the campsite he kept me informed, but otherwise gave me my privacy and it really felt like I had the place to myself. Andy even loaned me a corkscrew after I forgot mine. Although the listing says no cooking equipment, the site was set up with a campfire grill grate which was so helpful for cooking over the open fire. I purchased the wood add on and Andy provided more than enough wood right beside the fire for two days. He also suggested a nearby Amish home-based bakery, which had some of the most delicious baked goods I’ve ever tasted. Every detail of this stay was thoughtful, peaceful, and memorable. I only wish I could have stayed longer! Highly recommend to anyone looking for a serene, stunning, and unique camping experience.

We had a wonderful 4 person, 3 generation summer trip to the beautiful driftless. We were comfortable as a group of 4. The bedrooms were attached to a cute living/rec area in the barn charmingly decorated & filled w/ homemade jams, pickles, produce, ice cream, cookies, etc. available for purchase at good prices.(NOTE: that part is open to the public & we had surprise visitors once). The dilly beans were our favorite, we could have eaten 5 quarts! The property itself is quite beautiful with many artistic features and surrounded by Amish farms on the lush green, rolling hills. You can hear the “clip clop” of horse-drawn buggies. In the morning and evening, hummingbirds buzzed all around the many small gardens in the expansive yard. If you are in the mood to saunter, you can take a stroll in just about any direction. The Belties (black cows w/ a white middle) were shy at first but they allowed us to give them treats on our 2nd day. The calves were affectionate from the start! There was a bench positioned for watching the sunset, and the night sky was filled w/ stars & the band of the Milky Way. The fire pit was safe & sturdy w/ an attachable grill & plenty of free wood for a nice fire. Importantly, the address is w/in a short drive to many regional attractions, incl Wildcat Mountain State Park, the Kickapoo Valley Reserve & Elroy-Sparta State Trail, along with many other trails, lakes & streams. We loved Elysian and have plans to visit again soon.
