We are 22 miles from the Kickapoo Valley Reserve, and a bit further North, from Ontario WI, one may embark by canoe or kayak, through some of the most stunning landscape to be found in Wisconsin. This area is called The Driftless because it lacks glacial drift, which refers to the deposits of silt, gravel and rock that glaciers would have left behind had they passed through this part of Southwestern Wisconsin. The area is unique in that the land here was never flattened by the ice that came through most of the Midwest during the last glacial period/ice age. When glaciers were in surrounding areas, the melt-water sometimes made its way into the Driftless Area and contributed to the formation of the valleys and bluffs which characterize the landscape, which is known for steep hills, forested ridges, deeply carved river valleys, and karst geology with caves and spring-fed cold water trout streams. Ecologically, the Driftless Area's flora and fauna are more closely related to those of the Great Lakes region and New England than those of the broader Midwest and central Plains regions.

We bought the farmette with much work outside and home interior remodel to complete. We slowly turned the property into our family oasis. We neighbor a pasture with cows. There are free range chickens running around during the day. Geese greet us every evening and morning at the pond...as do the many bullfrogs. Occasionally you'll hear the coyotes, but they keep their distance. The stars shine peacefully and the sunsets are picturesque (most afternoons). The pond is a great place to swim and fish. There is no running water in the cabin but there is a dry sink and compost toilet. A shower is just a short walk away at the main cabin with all the instant hot water that could be asked for. We have plenty of extras to share if you need something, if not a Dollar General is just a mile away. Please be aware there are poisonous plants and various wildlife that roam freely. No animal hunting allowed. We love pets and have adopted ours which roam freely. We’re sorry we can’t accommodate yours for that reason… we can recommend local accommodations for your fur babies.

Sittin Pretty Farm rises from the hospitality of my folks, Harry and Evelyn, of Cozy Corners Farm, where I grew up in the tall corn country of central Iowa. That country hospitality fills the big-hearted welcome we extend here. You’ll feel the storied old-farm charm of our perch on the ridge, looking west over fields and woods, and you’ll see some of the prettiest sunsets around. Come on up to the ridge and join us for Friday wood-fired pizza, live music on our outdoor Big Wheel stage, or events in the loft of our climate-controlled party barn. Our commercial kitchen and staff can cater your event, or you can rent the kitchen and showcase your own culinary talent. We have enough guest cabins to sleep up to eighteen guests. Weddings, concerts, parties, pop-up restaurants, fundraisers—rent our spaces to create your own heartfelt memories on this ridge top just 6 miles from Viroqua. Sittin Pretty is the community outreach arm of our non-profit organization, Further Along, Inc., and works in tandem with our youth adventure and service-learning program, the Merry Green Marvel. All proceeds from Sittin Pretty go to support our non-profit and other local non-profits.

This secluded and private property sits on a dead end road within the Driftless Region of Richland County. Bring your tent or enjoy the Amish cabin which offers the ability to sleep inside on a Comforpedic or Tempurpedic king size beds, one in each loft. If crawling up into the loft is a bit much, you can pull out the bed in the couch. For even more creature comforts, bring your own generator to plug in this Amish cabin just like you would a crock pot! Once power is on you can enjoy the lights, microwave, ceiling fans, TV and the endless number of DVDs but we prefer the simplicity of nature! There is also a porta potty. This property offers a private hilltop with southern views and northern hillside protection. Enjoy the millions of stars in a clear night sky. Wake up to the sounds of birds, see deer feeding in the fields and enjoy a cup of coffee on the front deck. Along with this site comes 40 acres of land to explore. This is easily accessible up a private road for most vehicles but if not, you can park down low and walk on up. All of this is just a few minutes away from a gas station for your bare necessities. If fishing is your thing, numerous streams are within a ten minute drive or go less than 5 miles north to enjoy the only lake in Richland County, Lee Lake! Great panfish, bass and walleye. If you want to step up from camping this is the place to visit!

Weekend Trip to The Rosebud Retreat

We were delighted with our stay at Folklore Village. The restored 1960's camper is a vintage dream that makes you feel like you have stepped back in time -and demands that you instantly take photos! The grounds are beautiful and peaceful. The camper is situated at the edge of a sea of prairie grass, with trees nearby, so birds and birdsong abound. I took an enjoyable walk on the mowed trail around the edge of the prairie. At night, it was very quiet - we were the only people on the grounds, and though the road is nearby there is very little traffic. The stay was convenient - the outhouse is a few steps away, and parking is quite close as well. We did not realize that water was not available at the actual campsite, but there were several gallons considerately provided, and water is easily obtained, in the same building where the showers are located which was an easy walk. Everything was immaculate - trailer, outhouse, bathroom and showers were all very clean and well kept, and the grounds seemed quite lovingly tended to. We encountered just one challenge during our stay: the mattress on the bed in the camper. We share a twin bed for part of the year, so it's not necessarily the size, but as I believe is called out in the listing for Folklore Village, the bed is small and a bit vintage-y - or maybe just slanty. Nevertheless we sorted it out and both slept extremely well both nights of our stay. We would definitely be happy to return to this idyllic place!

What a great weekend and amazing spot! Cute, cozy, simple and in the woods- just what we needed! The cabin - comfy bed, great linen, mini fridge, snacks and amazing decks to listen to the wind in the trees. Great host - thank you for the help getting our car where it needed to be for our paddle- the river was amazing and then to sot at a private beach all late afternoon - We will be back!

Weekend Trip to Elysian View Farms

This was one of the best Hipcamp stays I've ever had. Christine truly thought of everything and it was clear from the moment I arrived how much care and attention went into the property and guest experience. The location was perfect. Within just a few miles, I was able to visit an Amish bakery, candy store, variety store, "Amish Walmart" and other local shops. There were also several canoeing and kayaking outfitters nearby for anyone wanting to enjoy the Kickapoo River. The living space stayed plenty cool while it was 85 degrees out and there were fans in each room. The main bedroom also had a little space heater for when the temperature dropped. My favorite part was the beautiful wooded area on the property. I loved driving the mile-long path back to the woods and then spending time walking the trails with my dogs. It was peaceful, quiet, and exactly the kind of escape I was looking for. Sitting in the shade, listening to the wind through the trees, and spending time with my dogs was the highlight of my trip. Also, I didn't have any problems with mosquitoes or ticks while I was there. I left wishing I had booked a longer stay. I would absolutely return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway in the heart of Amish country. Oh, and bring enough cash! Between all the Amish shops, purchasing some organic beef from Christine and visiting her farm stand, I almost ran out and it's like a 15 minute drive to Ontario for an ATM machine.

Weekend Trip to New Hope Farm

Everything was wonderful. It was a very cozy stay and we loved being on the New Hope Farm with Mary and Rick. They are such nice people and we enjoyed visiting with them and exploring their property, especially the woods and meadows and springs. The cabin was just what we needed, very comfortable and with the basic necessities for glamping that made it ideal. We hope to keep coming back and to experience all the seasons there.

Weekend Trip to The Rosebud Retreat

We absolutely loved our stay at the Rosebud Retreat pink camper trailer at Folklore Village! This is a stand alone little camper a few steps from WC facilities and shower facilities just down the road. The trailer has a lovely little deck that looks out over a field, it has privacy while being nestled behind a few other Folklore buildings. The camper does not have running water, but there is bottled water available; no stove top, so you might consider bringing a small single camping stove, which is what we did. So we used the microwave and fridge in the trailer and our own burner outside the camper to cook a bit of salmon and boil water in the morning. We absolutely plan to stay there when we go back to Gov.Dodge.StatePark to finish some rock climbing routes. A beautiful small climbing crag, by the way, with sandstone reminding of Luxembourg! Highly recommend this hipcamp option. Can’t wait to get back to it ourselves!!

Beautiful views!!! Charming living quarters. Christine made sure you have the essentials such as gas grill, coffee pot, microwave, crock pot and electric skillet and cooking utensils. There is no refrigerator or stove so make sure to bring ice. Full size bed is very comfortable . There is a porta potty close to the building. There is talk about a portable shower coming this summer. Very quiet and lovely stay.

We adored our stay at Elysian View Farm. The view is indeed spectacular, especially at sunset, and the rural surroundings, both agricultural and natural are stunning. But even more beautiful, for us, was the warmth, kindness, and generosity of our hosts, Christine and Dave. They made us feel special and cared about, helped us find a beautiful fishing spot, and treated us like family. We are honored and blessed to have been their guests.

Had a wonderful time at River's edge! There were some heavy thunderstorms going on throughout the State during our stay, so we were able to enjoy beautiful lightning and thunder from the safety of the cabin porches and the forest around us! Also enjoyed the trails around the forest and River banks. Caught a beautiful sunset. Would definitely recommend!
