Campfire Tale: The Legend of John Tornow "The Wildman of the Wynooche." More than a century ago, the forests around Travers Mountain were home to one of Washington’s most mysterious figures — John Tornow, the Wildman of the Wynooche. Born in 1880, Tornow grew up as a gifted woodsman and hunter. He was known for his uncanny ability to move silently through the timber, living off the land with the skill of someone more animal than man. But his story turned dark after the tragic deaths of his nephews, the Bauer twins, whose family homestead you can still see from our property. Accused of their killings, Tornow fled deep into the wilderness. For nearly two years, he evaded every search party and posse that hunted him. Locals whispered that he was impossible to track — some even swore he could vanish into the trees like a ghost. He became both feared and respected, remembered as part outlaw, part legend. The tale ends in 1913, when a massive manhunt cornered Tornow in the woods. Even then, he fought fiercely, leaving his mark on Grays Harbor history forever. So when you camp here whether its under the trees-at Tornow’s Timberline, perched high at Outlaw’s Overlook, or gathered by the fire at Wildman’s Saloon Stop — listen closely to the night sounds. We are located on top of Bunker Hill nestled between the Dunn creek and Chehalis river. Our property is 56 acres of mixed biomes including multi-generational forests, open meadows, and creek side trails. We are located right off Chandler Road, off of Highway 6. You turn onto Labri road (white sign) and you're on the property after going through a gate. Meander down the road past a red barn and several buildings on your right. Through the second gate, the dispersed camping site offers various sites for camping attached to a main trail that parallels the Dunn creek down to the Chehalis river. They are conveniently accessible off the logging roads which cross with Labri road after you've passed through the second gate. If you take the logging road to the left (look for a blue and white ribbon) you will come up to a tree line where you can park (another blue and white ribbon) and either take the trail to the left or right where you will find ample places to camp. You may camp along the trail or closer to the creek. The most ideal spot is right after you park near the blue and white ribbon if you walk North you'll see a site marked with an orange and white ribbon. This site has easy access to the creek but is still on a hill. There are four RV spots with full onsite hook-up. Two of the RV sites are paved and lit with ground lights and are prioritized for heavier rigs. The other two sites are on grass. We have two RV sites with no hook up (boondocking) but bathroom and shower access. We do not allow dumping of grey water or sewage at our property but there is a dump station just 1 minute away at Rainbow Falls State Park. The site is located on a hill so you get very nice view of sunsets and sunrises. For those who enjoy bird watching the nearby fruit trees bring in many birds. We are an ideal location for those who love the outdoors or just want to have private family events. 6 mi from Jones Creek Brewing, 7 mi from Evey's Cafe & Pe Ell, 20 mi from I-5, 69 mi Westport Quiet hours are from 11pm - 8am.

We were teaching Reiki (energy healing classes) by going on the road to hotels and seminars, but we wanted a peaceful place with a country setting to teach these training classes. We found this beautiful place with spring water to drink and lots of forest land behind our 22 acres, and we have been here 24 years. We are into natural/alternative healthy living and energy healing. We are good stewards of the land and will happily share it with you. We have a little creek that is spring-fed and runs year-round! There are numerous hiking trails, where a person can get a quick 25-30 min exercise going up and down the mountain trails.

Family property for almost 70 years. Town was known as Carlisle in the late 1800's to early 1940's. Located on the Carlisle Gardens Road. Private 30 acres with 100+ blueberry bushes. Great property for a nature walk. Seasonal plants. Harrier Falcon, Eagles, Turkey Vultures, Barn Owls, White Owls, Grouse just to name a few of the birds around. An occassional rabbit or 2. Learn more about this land: Grassy tent site next to Ida M's Blueberry Row. Mainly a quiet piece of property surrounded by nature. Hummingbirds and butterflies. Fire pit, picnic table, solar lights, clean drinking water, and trash bin. Short walk to Port a Potty. 9 miles from Pacific Beach and Seabrook. We do live on the property, located on the other side of the blueberry rows, across the driveway with our 3 labrador retrievers and chickens. There is also a swing set, jungle gym, and a horse shoe pit. You will be seeing my husband and I come and go while staying here, also other family and friends that visit. So if you are looking for a completely private place, staying here would not meet your expectations.

It’s very private since we were the only campers that time we stayed there. I definitely would like to stay there in summertime . The caretakers did way beyond what. We expected . He gave us wood to burn and we did enjoyed our overnight there even it rained . The brook an added tranquil touch of my experience. Thank you and I hope to go back again soon.

Tent camped here off season for a couple days of hunting. Nice campground especially for the price as long as you don’t need a power pole which I don’t. Will camp here again! Especially appreciate the firewood program of wood provided just pay for it with a QR code via PayPal if you didn’t bring your own.

The view is unbeatable. The hwy noise make a little less peaceful, but a great location to hit the spots of Cape Disappointment and Astoria. I found it amusing that is in the presumed location of Lewis and Clark's "Dismal Niche" where there were trapped for several days before completing their journey to the mouth of the Columbia. It was far from dismal for me.

Really cool spot! Very private - we stayed on a Saturday and the entire time had maybe 3 cars drive pass by and there’s no other houses nearby or across the river so you truly feel private but safe. Beautiful surroundings and the site itself was spacious. Watching the ships pass by was the best part and I read some complaints about the tower but we thought it was cool and added to the unique vibe of the area. Would most definitely return!

Definitely a must camp here! End of September so everyone just had been there for fishing season. Pretty much had the place to ourself. Everyone here is so welcoming and kind, we had full hook ups a few steps away from river and lots of land to have peaceful hikes. There a little house with just a full kitchen, washer and dryer and bathrooms even with a shower. A quick 35min drive from Astoria which we spent one of our days at. The lady assisting the owner was so kind to give my kids a golf cart tour of the dry camping area and were the walking trails are at. They loved it!!! Everything very well managed and cared for here. I do like to be able to drop trash instead of haul it back but not a deal breaker we will definitely be back.
