Learn more about this land: Fall asleep to hooting owls and the gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank your campsite. Wake up with a dip in the river or a morning hike in the woods. Feel the hug of the mountains throughout your stay, while also having access to Blacksburg nearby should you need it.  DIRECTIONS: Upon entry the gravel road is shared with my neighbor and it is about 1.5 miles from the entry gate to the site. You'll enter thru a gate (it may be closed, if closed please close behind you as my neighbor sometimes has cows). Go approx 1 mile the road will split...go up the hill on the right. Continue past the Hay barn another half mile. Park on the left side of the gravel road along the tree line. Another 50ft you'll see a wood foot bridge across the creek. The sites are ahead, PawPaw is first, then Bloodroot Base Camp (bell tent), and lastly Cohosh Cove is the most private. Each site has a sign as well When driving, please be respectful of the right of way. Drive slowly and respect the farm equipment. Also please do not venture onto the neighbor’s property other than entry and exit. About the property 20 minutes from Blacksburg and 35 minutes from Roanoke, our campground gives you great access to the “Triple Crown” of the Appalachian trail, consisting of McAfee Knob, Tinker Cliffs, and Dragon’s Tooth. Conquer these iconic peaks of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains for spectacular views of the surrounding wilderness. Additionally, explore Falls Ridge Nature preserve, Cascades waterfall, and Carvin’s Cove for hiking, kayaking and mountain biking.  Or just stay on the campground and enjoy the hiking and swimming we offer here.  Nearby in Blacksburg take advantage of the local breweries or Virginia Tech football home games. You can also find Christmas tree cutting in Floyd county, 45mins away.  This property deserves to be shared with others. It is peaceful and beautiful. As your Host, I am passionate about conservation and also teaching people about the medicinal uses of our local herbs. I can lead medicinal herb walks upon request for $25 a person. I typically try to meet the campers if I can upon arrival, I am available for questions and can be hands on or off as the needs of campers suggest. I have had campers ask if I wanted to share a beverage and sit around the fire and have done so. I want to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. I love the peacefulness the property offers, and that you’re in the middle of the wilderness but also have quick access to things in town. The river campsites are my favorite part of the property. At the main cabin I have goats and chickens which hipcampers are more than welcome to greet.  About the listing Pitch your tents at the campsite nestled along the side of the mountain on the banks of the North Fork of the Roanoke River. As you fall asleep, listen to the occasional hoot of an owl, howl of a coyote, and gentle ripple of the river and creek that flank the campsite. Before the Kerr Scott Reservoir was built, in the 40's and 50's, this neighborhood was a local swimming hole and vacation area. Public buses came from neighboring communities so people could boat, swim, camp, and picnic. While we don't have access to the pond, our part of this land still is calling out to people, 'Come, rest, unload your burdens, and find peace.' When we started this project with Hipcamp, we didn't fully realize that we were reconnecting with the history on this property. So, come, take your shoes off, and wade in the creek. Read a book while laying in a hammock. Sit by the fire and chat with family and friends. Come and participate in our little homesteading project, and leave your burdens behind. LOCAL ACTIVITIES: To the west is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 30 minutes away. 15 minutes away is Kerr Scott Dam where you can rent kayaks, pontoon boats, as well as other sporting equipment. Fish, go mountain biking on the extensive trails, and hiking. Prayer Mountain is right up the road, about 2 miles away. Heading east, you can find several fine wineries andvineyards that you can visit. There is also a moonshine distillery in town. About a half hour away is an Amish community that has several businesses open to the public, including the Shiloh Bakery and General Store. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. To the northeast, about 45 minutes away, is Stone Mountain. Absolutely fantastic hiking, it is also an old homestead that has been renovated and is open to the public. To the south, there is Rocky Face Park, where there is hiking and rock climbing. Nearby, is Emerald Hollow Mine, where you can go and find, and keep, precious stones you find in the nearby river. There is also a great disk course course, Highland Hills Disc Golf Course, one of the top 25 in the country. There is fun for all ages. Merlefest, the last weekend of April, is a world class Bluegrass festival, is located right in our town. Be sure to look at the activities section below for additional information.

The farmhouse served as Benjamin’s primary residence for six years, providing a never-ending source of inspiration and peace that most folks only experience a handful times in their life. In 2011, Benjamin moved to Boone and began leasing the farmhouse as a vacation rental. In 2018, he purchased the adjacent five acres (that he could not afford in 2004) and began to reclaim the land and creek from the scrubby, thorny growth that had settled on the dormant property. While the property transformed before his eyes, Benjamin felt as if he was discovering this place for the very first time. As he reveled in the excitement and pleasant exhaustion of working with the land, he became increasingly convinced that this special place was meant to be shared. Thus, the concept of Wonderlust Acres as a gathering place was born.More than a business, Wonderlust Acres is an expression of Benajmin’s appreciation for the spirit of the mountains and the endearing communities that they envelop. With the opening of Wonderlust Acres, Benjamin invites you to experience the enchantment for yourself.Learn more about this land:Located just 2 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Mountains-to-Sea trail, and just 30 minutes from Boone/West Jefferson/Wilkesboro, and nestled in a private, open-meadowed valley overlooking a noisy trout stream and large ponds, the timber frame barn is a 3800 sqft wedding venue with the 2 changing rooms which have been converted to 2 glamping rooms. Both are locked off from the main barn structure to allow use when no events are scheduled, and have separate private keyed access, and include streaming TV, a 2-top burner, mini-fridge, and fold-down small full sofa bed for 2 (larger people may need to bring a blow-up mattress/pad for more room to spread out!). There is a men's and women's bathroom with 2 stalls joining the barn and accessed from the outside, along with 2 outdoor showers for longer stays. Propane, on-demand hot water is provided.

The other structure that can be rented is the pond pavilion (an additional guest fee is charged over 4 people to accommodate) that features 2 full-size outdoor mattresses, a camping stove, chairs, and large firepit and firecircle. There are picnic tables also on site for use. This is truly luxury camping.

Where to go

Claytor Lake State Park

Sweat on the trails, and then cool off with a swim in Claytor Lake. Reservations are required for tent camping, yurt, waterview cabin, and bunkhouse rentals by the lake, and they’re worth it—electric hookups and picnic areas are available at most on-site campgrounds. Check out private boat rentals at the marina for outings on the water. Anglers can also enjoy the fishing pier, while campers seeking scenery can hike Lakeview Trail for an easy walk by the lake.

Fairy Stone State Park

Known for the rare, tiny “fairy stones'' that fill the red sand, Fairy Stone State Park offers a beautiful destination for hiking, horseback riding, paddleboating, and swimming in the 168-acre lake. Tent camping, equestrian camping, and climate-controlled cabin or yurt rentals allow campers to stay overnight in the park, but cabins don’t include linens. Most campsites include fire rings and electric and water hookups. For a unique souvenir, walk to the Fairy Stone Pit Stop and hunt for fairy stones—each visitor is allowed to collect a few to take home.

Stone Mountain State Park

Just over the North Carolina border lies Stone Mountain State Park, home to the 600-foot national landmark that gives the area its name. Wander along hiking trails for waterfall views, fish for trout in streams, or go horseback riding on one of Stone Mountain’s many bridle trails. Electric and water hookups and a dump station make this park RV-friendly. Group and individual tent camping sites also offer showers and firewood.

When to go

Fall is the most popular time to camp near Fancy Gap, when bright colors decorate the forests and campers can relax in cool weather. In summer, temperatures average around 80°F. Campers can beat the humidity with a campground near the water for swimming, boating, and fishing. Most Virginia state parks are open year-round, so winter camping near Fancy Gap is also an option for campers seeking a quiet escape. Winter temperatures in the area average between 40–45°F.
