Starting December 1, or first night below freezing we will be closing down Bath House and only access will be at outhouses. Only sites near outhouses will be open and there will be no access to water. Situated at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains and bordering the Jefferson National Forest, Thunder BRidge has scenic, large, private tent sites and cabins in the woods for those who want to experience camping at its finest. Many of the sites border Elk Creek. Our RV sites are large, flat and at the edge of the forest in a well kept open green space. Our 100 acres was originally a camp built by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the "30s and early '40s, then a boys' juvenile detention center and Big Brothers'/Big Sisters' camp, which closed in 2009. The tent sites and cabins are in the forest, away from the buildings out front, but you're free to walk around and check out the historic site. Most of the buildings out front are artist studios (currently for 16 artists). We like to share the camp with others and watch it come back to life. All within a short driving distance are the Natural Bridge, wineries, breweries, Natural Bridge Zoo, Safari Park, Dinosaur Kingdom, Appalachian Trail, Blue Ridge Parkway, James River, historic Lexington, Devil's Marbleyard, Glenwood Horse Trail, swimming holes, etc. We have river access 2 miles up the road if you'd like to fish or put your kayak or canoe in. Truly, there is something nearby for everyone. We'd be happy to give you recommendations of things to see and do. If you are a star gazer you won't be disappointed by our dark sky. We want to share our property with those who want to stay for more than one night, so we do not accept inquiries of single night stays.

The hot outdoor shower and compost toilet are 25 steps from the front door tucked into the tree line. The pond sits in front of the cabin, a picnic table sets by the edge. We love living simply, and immersed in nature, and have designed the space for others who also share this passion. We often see deer, turkey, bear, fox, and coyote. Maybe you will too! You will love reading your book by the pond while listening to the frog chorus, and taking your evening shower while gazing upon the ancient oaks. Our location is 15 minutes from the Appalachian Trail and James River access. The Jefferson Washington National Forest is nearby and offers opportunities for visiting waterfalls, hiking, mountain biking, climbing, and paddling. Downtown Lynchburg is 20 minutes away with great restaurants, farmers markets and shopping. We are a growing homestead. We are planting fruits trees, cultivating shiitake mushrooms, raising ducks and tending gardens here and have farm fresh products that are seasonally available to guests just ask! There is a cleared walkable path down to the lower end of our farm where you’ll find creeks that run through the property. With nearly 60 acres of private forest, you can hike and explore, or spend time on one of the grassy knolls we have cleared. You can enjoy swimming or even just a quick dip in the creeks on our property and hiking just 600 feet from campsites. If you're looking for a nearby adventure, Holliday Lake State Park, Bear Creek State Park and the James River are all close by and are great spots to go rafting or tubing! Historic Scottsville is just up the road where you can find restaurants, breweries, grocery stores if you need and more. Being in the Piedmont region, we also have quick access to multiple vineyards that make for a great day trip. There are opportunities to go swimming, hiking, kayaking, rafting, and visit wineries all within 20-60 miles of our property. There is really something for everyone to do!We're surrounded by working farms on all sides so, thankfully, the only noise is from a heard of sheep across the way, or some deer in the forest. It’s a truly peaceful outdoor getaway. As hosts, we typically greet our visitors at some point during their stay, though we are very happy to respect total privacy. We hope you enjoy the wonderful sunsets, creek access, and stars above as much as we do!About the Listing:Come pitch your tent or park your RV on our property and set up camp at the edge of our farm! We have a few other campsites, well-spaced apart, so you can expect to see other campers periodically throughout your stay in passing or in common areas such as the toilet. You will be able to enjoy privacy and all the serenity that the outdoors has to offer! There is cooking grate on the fire pit so you can cook up some delicious meals. We’d suggest bringing some camping chairs if you’re tent camping to enjoy your meals or your morning coffee, as we do not have a picnic table on site. You can also enjoy cozying up by the private campfire and toasting some marshmallows at sunset. We have potable well water for our campers as well as a shared double stall composting toilet for your comfort. My husband, dog, and I had a great time car camping on Emmalyn's land. We arrived after dark, but it was still easy to navigate to the site. It is not too far from the highway, and we found it to be very quiet. It was a perfect stopover for our long drive!

We had a wonderful experience! Fran was lovely when we checked in and out! Buddy and Ally (the dogs) kept us company throughout the night and made us feel secure! Mr. Duck and the various cats were also lovely to meet! We were the only campers that night, so it felt very private. Just a heads up that most campsites are directly next to another campsite! I would definitely come back with a larger group and reserve two adjacent campgrounds!

Great site, we will be back again. The tent sites and cabins look amazing. We stayed in the RV site with electric and water. It was easy to get to and set up. The only negative is that you are close to the road and get the traffic noise. There is lots of room to roam and let kids and dogs play.

A friend of mine and I stayed at Forest site. To me it was the second time to camp at Forest site. We had a very relaxing beautiful autumn night with a nice camping fire. Gail was a great host as always —- kind, considerate and generous. Gail let my friend use her sauna house in the morning even when she was quite busy. My friend enjoyed taking the sauna. The forest was beautiful in the sun light reflected by the fall foliage. It was even nicer to be able to see a few horses among the trees at a distance, eating hay quietly. The well maintained forest condition suggests that Gail has been a very diligent worker.

Fantastic Stay – Highly Recommend! We had an amazing experience at this camp! Actually stayed at tentsite #3.... Adam was very accommodating to my date change and even suggested the tent site for car camping. Great site and amazing to have restroom and shower so close. Good wifi signal at the rec room and even reached my site.
