Our property is nestled in the foothills of the Mad River Valley, close to the headwaters of the river. It is here that we run Roots School, a wilderness earth skills school, instructing adults and youth alike.
The land has over a half a mile of river frontage and several streams, a beautiful varied forest, rambling topography, and plenty of wildlife. Many lessons in tracking may be found as whitetails, moose, black bear, fishers, bobcats, porcupine, coyotes, foxes, mink, ermine, snowshoe hare, wild turkey, and ruffled grouse, are seen and tracked. Often times we are also lucky enough to catch a hawk circling the pasture and to hear the barred owls calls in the darkness of night. The diversity of plants, trees, and animals make this an ideal place to study and grow, or simply hang out in and experience.

It's lambing time!!! This is the best time of year to visit us, as maximum cuteness is running around just a short walk across the suspension bridge from where you will be staying! We currently have 11 newborn lambs all less than two weeks old (two new arrivals today!) and two ewes are still waiting to deliver. Who knows...maybe they will wait til you get here!
Our farm was named after the summer home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. Trollhaugen Farm means Troll hill, but the only real trolls around these parts are the sheep. Our farm has sheep, pigs, chickens and ducks that you are welcome to visit.
The yurt sits under the trees next to a babbling brook. A suspension bridge connects you to the farm area. The yurt is private and has a fire pit right out back where you can grill or just sit and enjoy the fire.
The colorful yurt offers a comfy four poster bed, a small kitchen area and a bathroom with shower and composting toilet.
This is a great place for children, bikers, swimmers, hikers or anyone who just wants to get away from it all for a few days. There are many lovely hikes, one of which takes you to a pond you can swim in. You can also hike up in the woods behind the yurt.
Newfane village is one of the most picturesque villages in Vermont, with a courthouse on the green. There are two restaurants in Newfane, two coffee shops, a flea market on Sundays, and a great antique store. We are close to Brattleboro, home to one of the best coops in the northeast, as well as many fun stores and an art museum.

Our cozy, private, rustic mountain yurt is a 30’ foot space located in an upper field tucked into a wooded hillside. Views facing east are great for watching the sunrise and a kitchen and outhouse mean you’ve got everything you need to get out of town for a few days.* The location provides a serene, intimate getaway for couples, artists or anyone looking for a bit of mindful downtime and introspection. 4WD recommended, ice and rain can greatly affect the roads.
There is a parking spot available to park across from Deer Road. Take the very short walk to the yurt.
Near our site is Green Mountain National Forest to explore. Blueberry Lake is just a short walk down our hill. Blueberry Lake is widely used year round for swimming, ice fishing, seasonal fishing, kayaking and canoeing.
Long Trail nearby
Bike trails/x country ski trails are connected right to our homestead. Continue on the trail and access some of the best mountain biking trails and snow biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.
Sugarbush Resort is a 10 minute drive and is one of the best ski mountains in the area!
If you are looking for gym and shower facilities, you can stop into the Sugarbush Resort, just a short driving distance, for a day pass fee.

Metta Earth Institute (MEI) is a non-profit educational retreat center in Lincoln, Vermont. With 158 beautiful acres, we are nestled in a bowl of mountains with stunning mountain views in all directions. Meadows, pastureland, and horticultural fields are interspersed with hardwood and evergreen forest, old orchards, stonewalls, seasonal streams, and an enormous variety of wildlife habitat. Walking and hiking places abound, and a magnificent, pure river with clear pools and waterfalls is just a few minutes’ walk down the road.
MEI is based on a small-scale diversified, organic, and biodynamically oriented farm with an acre-sized retreat garden and other herb and flower gardens, and 2 food producing greenhouses. We practice regenerative agriculture, carbon farming, and many other environmentally sustainable practices.
Main House Front Porch
The front porch of the main house has continued to be a wonderful gathering place with outstanding sunset views and surrounding terraced gardens with blossoms and berries that attract hummingbirds and bees. We serve meals from the adjoining big kitchen, and these can be enjoyed on the porch or taken on trays to the nearby Plum Grove, other outdoor settings. The porch is a great place to meet with others or enjoy a place to sit and read. There is also a good internet connection on the porch and a place to charge devices.
You are welcome to walk anywhere on Metta Earth land. Or you may want to walk on the surrounding dirt roads, all with very minimal cars and great mountain views or along the river. We can give further directions and information about the region when you are here.
Our stays range from basic tent sites to Yurts and Canvas Tents. We have something for everyone.
We have four yurts nestled on a knoll among maples, beeches, balsam, and other trees. They each are positioned for a sense of privacy from the others and have little paths connecting them. They all are well loved and humble, beautiful, light filled circular spaces with a round dome skylight, lattice siding, windows with screens for summer use and in winter extra insulation provided by window quilts. Each yurt has a wood stove for colder weather. The yurts are furnished simply with various configurations of single and double beds, tables, chairs, shelving, and sheepskins or other floor rugs. At night a few of the paths are lit with solar lamps, so it is wise to bring a flashlight/headlamp as well. Beeswax candles provide inside night lighting. Some of the yurts have string, solar lights around the inside of the yurt walls.
We have 5 bell tents that are lovely, roundish shaped tents with a peak. Four of them are smaller, one-person tents, and one is larger for a couple or 2 people. We provide amattress and pillow with organic bedding and a sheepskin rug, and a simple storage crate/table. It’s a good idea to bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially in the potentially colder shoulder seasons in May and in September.
If you have a tent, insulated ground mat, and sleeping gear, we have many inspiring sites in the surrounding forest glades, meadows, and fields. Those who choose to camp have access to outdoor composting toilets, a hot water outside faucet for bucket bathing, and outdoor shower available in the warmer seasons. Camping requires a certain hardiness and adequate gear. Weather during the growing season (May – October) in the mountains of Vermont is unpredictable. Temperatures range from freezing temperatures at night in the spring and fall to gloriously warm days and even hot days.

Cariad Bach Yurt is an off-grid yurt set in a quiet corner of our working sheep farm on the outskirts of Poultney, Vermont. Backing onto pasture and overlooking the river, it’s designed as a peaceful glamping retreat for two—a place to slow down, unplug, and enjoy the rhythms of farm life.
The yurt is traditionally inspired and imported from Mongolia, where yurts have long been used by sheep-raising communities as practical, seasonal homes. That connection felt like a natural fit here. Our farm is centered around pasture-raised sheep, and depending on the time of year, you may see animals grazing nearby or hear them settling in for the evening. When animals are on the farm, guests are welcome to arrange a visit.
The site is private and has its own entrance, separate from the main farmyard. While we’re close to the road, the yurt sits in a quieter pocket of the property with direct access to the river. Evenings are calm, with the sound of water and the surrounding countryside.
Inside, the yurt is simply but comfortably furnished, with a wood stove for heat and solar power for lighting and device charging. This is a true off-grid stay—there is no running water. Cooking is done in a separate outdoor kitchen area with a roof but open sides. It works well in fair weather and most of the year, though winter cooking does require preparation for the cold. A nearby propane incinerator toilet, imported from Norway, completes the setup.
Access to the yurt is on foot via a short walk from the parking area, so guests should be comfortable carrying their gear. In winter, snow can make access more challenging. There is no running water on site.
Our self-serve farm stand is open year-round and reflects the British roots of the farm, offering baked goods and farm products you won’t typically find locally. Guests staying at the yurt can arrange special pre-order offerings, including breakfast items and pasture-raised lamb or mutton for the grill.
Cariad Bach Yurt is best suited for couples, hikers, and bikers looking for a quiet, nature-focused stay. No pets and no smoking in the buildings.
The yurt uses a specialized incinerating toilet system. Guests are required to review and complete a short usage acknowledgment prior to arrival.

We are cold weather friendly! We have a wood stove and are insulated! This off-grid yurt is nestled in the forest of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, only 2 miles from Lake Willoughby. It stands in a field atop a hill surrounded by cedar and pine. The yurt provides a true off-grid experience with no cell service, wifi, or electricity. We do provide a generator for pumping water to our outdoor shower and sink. The generator can be used for charging as needed. The yurt is winterized and has a woodstove, making it easy to have warm and cozy nights, even in the middle of winter. We have an outdoor grill and an indoor camp stove. We provide an outhouse and an outdoor shower. Next to the shower is a sink for washing hands and dishes. The yurt comfortably sleeps 4, with one futon sleeping 2 and a bunk bed. If you love life on two wheels, treat yourself to the miles of dirt roads and nearby mountain biking trails. I'm an avid outdoorswoman and will happily point you and your adventurous spirit to the best spots in the area!
In addition to being close to several state parks (Little River, Groton, Camel's Hump and Mount Mansfield), East Montpelier hosts a dozen miles of walking trails through woods and fields. Our yurt has a loft where you can climb the ladder to a queen-sized bed. Or you can sleep on the full-sized futon on the main floor. We closed in half of the area under the loft for the bathroom, including a flush toilet, sink and shower. Please note there is a folding privacy screen but no door to the bathroom. The yurt has a small kitchen with a small refrigerator, toaster oven, coffeemaker, double cooktop, sink, pots, pans dishware and silverware. In colder weather the space is heated with a Rinai propane heater.
The whole yurt is yours to use as well as the associated porch/outdoor space and firepit. Wood-fired sauna (Available November - April if we're around during your stay. Please let us know if you're interested when you book and then coordinate timing when you arrive. No guarantees however...)
Did I mention that our property abuts the 4,000 acre Bristol Cliffs Wilderness Area? Notch Brook and the New Haven River, which are just down the road from us, provide ample fishing and swimming opportunities.
Are you interested in sampling Vermont’s famous brews, wines and spirits? We’re 5 minutes from the Bobcat Cafe and 15 minutes from Middlebury where you’ll find Otter Creek Brewery, Lincoln Peak Vineyard and other breweries and distilleries.
Are you curious about how maple syrup is made? We’d be happy to give you a tour of our 750 tap sugaring operation and samples of our syrup, candy and other maple confections.
Please note that the Yurt is about seventy five feet from our house on a working tree farm in a rural - residential neighborhood. We are generally very quiet and you will have all the privacy you desire. We do have a young daughter that likes to play outside in our yard, we do occasionally run tools and equipment and there is occasional road noise. If you are looking for a true wilderness type experience away from it all, this likely isn't the best option for you.

Newfane village is one of the most picturesque villages in Vermont, with a courthouse on the green. There are two restaurants in Newfane, two coffee shops, a flea market on Sundays, and a great antique store. Near our site is Green Mountain National Forest to explore. Blueberry Lake is just a short walk down our hill. Blueberry Lake is widely used year round for swimming, ice fishing, seasonal fishing, kayaking and canoeing.

Bike trails/x country ski trails are connected right to our homestead. Continue on the trail and access some of the best mountain biking trails and snow biking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.
Sugarbush Resort is a 10 minute drive and is one of the best ski mountains in the area!
If you are looking for gym and shower facilities, you can stop into the Sugarbush Resort, just a short driving distance, for a day pass fee.

Metta Earth Institute (MEI) is a non-profit educational retreat center in Lincoln, Vermont. MEI is based on a small-scale diversified, organic, and biodynamically oriented farm with an acre-sized retreat garden and other herb and flower gardens, and 2 food producing greenhouses. We practice regenerative agriculture, carbon farming, and many other environmentally sustainable practices.
Main House Front Porch
The front porch of the main house has continued to be a wonderful gathering place with outstanding sunset views and surrounding terraced gardens with blossoms and berries that attract hummingbirds and bees. We serve meals from the adjoining big kitchen, and these can be enjoyed on the porch or taken on trays to the nearby Plum Grove, other outdoor settings. The porch is a great place to meet with others or enjoy a place to sit and read. There is also a good internet connection on the porch and a place to charge devices.
You are welcome to walk anywhere on Metta Earth land. Or you may want to walk on the surrounding dirt roads, all with very minimal cars and great mountain views or along the river. We can give further directions and information about the region when you are here.
Our stays range from basic tent sites to Yurts and Canvas Tents. We have something for everyone.
We have four yurts nestled on a knoll among maples, beeches, balsam, and other trees. They each are positioned for a sense of privacy from the others and have little paths connecting them. They all are well loved and humble, beautiful, light filled circular spaces with a round dome skylight, lattice siding, windows with screens for summer use and in winter extra insulation provided by window quilts. Each yurt has a wood stove for colder weather. The yurts are furnished simply with various configurations of single and double beds, tables, chairs, shelving, and sheepskins or other floor rugs. At night a few of the paths are lit with solar lamps, so it is wise to bring a flashlight/headlamp as well. Beeswax candles provide inside night lighting. Some of the yurts have string, solar lights around the inside of the yurt walls.
We have 5 bell tents that are lovely, roundish shaped tents with a peak. Four of them are smaller, one-person tents, and one is larger for a couple or 2 people. We provide amattress and pillow with organic bedding and a sheepskin rug, and a simple storage crate/table. It’s a good idea to bring a sleeping bag for extra warmth, especially in the potentially colder shoulder seasons in May and in September.
If you have a tent, insulated ground mat, and sleeping gear, we have many inspiring sites in the surrounding forest glades, meadows, and fields. Those who choose to camp have access to outdoor composting toilets, a hot water outside faucet for bucket bathing, and outdoor shower available in the warmer seasons. Camping requires a certain hardiness and adequate gear. Weather during the growing season (May – October) in the mountains of Vermont is unpredictable. Temperatures range from freezing temperatures at night in the spring and fall to gloriously warm days and even hot days.

Cariad Bach Yurt is an off-grid yurt set in a quiet corner of our working sheep farm on the outskirts of Poultney, Vermont. Backing onto pasture and overlooking the river, it’s designed as a peaceful glamping retreat for two—a place to slow down, unplug, and enjoy the rhythms of farm life.
The yurt is traditionally inspired and imported from Mongolia, where yurts have long been used by sheep-raising communities as practical, seasonal homes. That connection felt like a natural fit here. Our farm is centered around pasture-raised sheep, and depending on the time of year, you may see animals grazing nearby or hear them settling in for the evening. When animals are on the farm, guests are welcome to arrange a visit.
The site is private and has its own entrance, separate from the main farmyard. While we’re close to the road, the yurt sits in a quieter pocket of the property with direct access to the river. Evenings are calm, with the sound of water and the surrounding countryside.
Inside, the yurt is simply but comfortably furnished, with a wood stove for heat and solar power for lighting and device charging. This is a true off-grid stay—there is no running water. Cooking is done in a separate outdoor kitchen area with a roof but open sides. It works well in fair weather and most of the year, though winter cooking does require preparation for the cold. A nearby propane incinerator toilet, imported from Norway, completes the setup.
Access to the yurt is on foot via a short walk from the parking area, so guests should be comfortable carrying their gear. In winter, snow can make access more challenging. There is no running water on site.
Our self-serve farm stand is open year-round and reflects the British roots of the farm, offering baked goods and farm products you won’t typically find locally. Guests staying at the yurt can arrange special pre-order offerings, including breakfast items and pasture-raised lamb or mutton for the grill.
Cariad Bach Yurt is best suited for couples, hikers, and bikers looking for a quiet, nature-focused stay. No pets and no smoking in the buildings.
The yurt uses a specialized incinerating toilet system. Guests are required to review and complete a short usage acknowledgment prior to arrival.

Our yurt has a loft where you can climb the ladder to a queen-sized bed. Or you can sleep on the full-sized futon on the main floor. We closed in half of the area under the loft for the bathroom, including a flush toilet, sink and shower. Please note there is a folding privacy screen but no door to the bathroom. The yurt has a small kitchen with a small refrigerator, toaster oven, coffeemaker, double cooktop, sink, pots, pans dishware and silverware. In colder weather the space is heated with a Rinai propane heater.
The whole yurt is yours to use as well as the associated porch/outdoor space and firepit. Wood-fired sauna (Available November - April if we're around during your stay. Please let us know if you're interested when you book and then coordinate timing when you arrive. No guarantees however...)
Did I mention that our property abuts the 4,000 acre Bristol Cliffs Wilderness Area? Notch Brook and the New Haven River, which are just down the road from us, provide ample fishing and swimming opportunities.
Are you interested in sampling Vermont’s famous brews, wines and spirits? We’re 5 minutes from the Bobcat Cafe and 15 minutes from Middlebury where you’ll find Otter Creek Brewery, Lincoln Peak Vineyard and other breweries and distilleries.
Are you curious about how maple syrup is made? We’d be happy to give you a tour of our 750 tap sugaring operation and samples of our syrup, candy and other maple confections.
Please note that the Yurt is about seventy five feet from our house on a working tree farm in a rural - residential neighborhood. We are generally very quiet and you will have all the privacy you desire. We do have a young daughter that likes to play outside in our yard, we do occasionally run tools and equipment and there is occasional road noise. If you are looking for a true wilderness type experience away from it all, this likely isn't the best option for you.

La Lu Farm is a beautiful property! The Goat Yurt is comfortable and the wood-burning stove makes it very cozy. The yurt is a good base camp for exploring the cute nearby towns and hiking in the Green Mountains. On a cold night, be sure to bring a warm sleeping bag and extra firewood (also, bring toilet paper for the outhouse). My spouse and I had lovely stay and would recommend!

Teri's yurt was a delightful, charming and cozy. Everything looked just as the pictures and was true to the description. The yurt was was a nice, warm retreat on a cool and windy Vermont evening. Teri was an active and responsive communicator and her directions were detailed and easy to follow. A small vase of flowers accompanied by a letter of details about the place AND a warmed fire were additional hospitable touches that I appreciated about my stay. It was a great value for the price, a lovely visit and I would highly recommend to others! Note: This is true glamping. There is no shower available and you must be comfortable with using an outhouse. However, there is water access in the sink which allows basic personal care and ability to wash dishes. All of this was more than fine with me and I greatly appreciated my stay.

We loved staying in the yurt during leaf peeping season! We were very warm, cozy, and feeling ‘off the grid’ in this secluded sunshine flooded spot with very little, if any, cell service. Our 26 lb pocket pittie had a blast running around all the hills and hopping around in the brush like a bunny. She was very sad when it was time to leave. I think this spot would be excellent for folks with small children as well because there’s plenty of nooks and crannies to explore without going very far. We loved sitting at the outdoor breakfast nook, reading, and napping in the breeze.

7 nights at La Lu Farm camp site
My partner and I spent a week at LaLu Farms for a getaway and to experience Vermont during the beginning of Fall. Constancia was a fantastic contact leading up to our trip, texting me various places we should try for local foods and trails.
When we arrived, her husband, Kevin, greeted us and walked us down to the yurt(about a 3 minute walk from where we parked). We were provided a good amount of firewood for the week, and we're told to take any wood we found in the surrounding woods if we needed more. The yurt was nice and cozy, with a cast iron heater to keep us warm on the cooler nights. The view of Green Mountain National Forest from the porch was worth the trip in of itself!! Kevin and Constancia would check in if they were out when we returned, but let us be and enjoy the trip.
The goats (8 of them) were such sweethearts. Very shy at first, but by the last day they were walking up to us and trying to be part of the family. The whole yurt and area we started felt like it was our own little goat farm. There was a compost outhouse near the yurt, which was very well kept and much better than we imagined! There is a shower and running toilet in the barn, which we used a few times. It does have a little smell of a barn, but nothing too overpowering and was very nice when coming back from a long hike.
The village of Waitsfield was a hidden gem. About 10 minutes from the farm, it has everything you need.

Went for a women’s trip, 4 of us. Normally we remote camp but wanted something easier. It’s glamping and was nice to have an indoor space for sleeping and one for cooking.
The land is beautiful. Jill even let us use a shower in her barn as the solar shower wasn’t working. That was nice after long hikes!

The wood stove made it cozy as temps dropped to 40’s at night.
Electricity made it very easy.

2 nights at Whimsical Green Mountain Yurt
We were there for a gravel bike trip. DId 2 nice loop right from the yurt. Cute place. Very relaxing charming off the grid spot. Lori was super welcoming and the instructions for the yourt was very clear. Every little details was considered.
Just know the shower is cold water , but eh , a little disconfort is always making the fireplace even nicer.

2 nights at Bristol Woods Yurt
It is a lovely, peaceful yurt. It was perfectly clean when we got there. It is a fun place to play games in. It is better for the environment, and the loft bed that I slept in is very comfortable. I was glad that I brought my own soft towels, but other than that, it was a perfect place to stay. Bristol is a very friendly town.

4 nights at cozy yurt in the woods
We had a good experience in the yurt! We did not meet Jill during our stay, but communication was easy. The outdoor shower was broken, but Jill kindly offered for us to use the shower in the barn which we appreciated.
Despite the heat it was a bearable temperature to sleep inside the yurt. The added bonus of the fully equipped kitchen makes it feel like a luxurious camping experience. The yurt is a little bit cluttered, but we did not mind this. The kitchen did feel a bit sticky and dirty, so this could perhaps be approved upon.
Parking next to the yurt was easy and convenient, and we appreciated Jill’s suggestions for where to eat in the towns nearby.

Group trip
Wonderful stay! The yurt is clean and spacious with comfortable beds. They recently installed a propane stove in the yurt that works very well with two burners. The outdoor kitchen was clean and had everything we needed.
Be prepared for a bit of a walk to the yurt and no cell service. WiFi at the school building worked well though.
We enjoyed the creek and trails. Lovely stay!

We greatly enjoyed our stay! The yurt, farm, and surrounding land are beautiful and peaceful. I loved reading about its history and thinking of all the people and animals who have been here over the years. The spot where the yurt is feels secluded, which helped our anxious dog find some calm in a new environment. Johanna and Bahman were helpful and friendly!
