Brief history of Camp Joy:
Camp Joy is a small parcel of land given to my grandmother and her sisters by my paternal great grandfather. It was part of a larger, 2,500 acre parcel that has been used for grazing sheep the last 100 or so years. As was common in those days, the male heir inherited the larger portion to continue the family business of sheep, and the three females inherited 1 acre each. My paternal grandmother fondly recalls spending her summers exploring the flora and fauna and staying overnight in a small cabin that they called “Camp Joy.” My father, also used to visit this area during his youth and has many fond memories of when the family would “Hie to Kolob.” My grandmother, being too old to enjoy the place herself, wanted to sell her portion to someone who would be able to enjoy it in this life. She didn’t believe in restricting access to the wonderful and uniquely awe inducing land surrounding Zion National park. She knew humans are just mere stewards , temporarily living off the land that Mother Nature has so generously provided for. My father and mother also shared this vision so (with his sisters/cousins permission) he purchased her share and the two adjoining lots that were owned by his aunts and combined them so we could have a place to park our trailers in the summertime. The advent of the internet and the resurgence of people wanting to go somewhere with their families to experience the peace and tranquility one can only find in the wilds, led us to feel that sharing this slice of heaven was not only economical but the right thing to do. So much of Kolob and the surrounding areas are marked off by private property, owners who aren’t even there to enjoy it 99% of the time. So we felt divinely called to offer our humble slice of heaven to likeminded individuals, seeking tranquility and peace but for some cosmic reason didn’t stand to inherit private property in the middle of one of the most beautiful places on earth. So welcome friend. We only ask, as you leave this place, to please bring with you this spirit of abundance and joy to wherever you call home.

Brief history of Camp Joy:
Camp Joy is a small parcel of land given to my grandmother and her sisters by my paternal great grandfather. It was part of a larger, 2,500 acre parcel that has been used for grazing sheep the last 100 or so years. As was common in those days, the male heir inherited the larger portion to continue the family business of sheep, and the three females inherited 1 acre each. My paternal grandmother fondly recalls spending her summers exploring the flora and fauna and staying overnight in a small cabin that they called “Camp Joy.” My father, also used to visit this area during his youth and has many fond memories of when the family would “Hie to Kolob.” My grandmother, being too old to enjoy the place herself, wanted to sell her portion to someone who would be able to enjoy it in this life. She didn’t believe in restricting access to the wonderful and uniquely awe inducing land surrounding Zion National park. She knew humans are just mere stewards , temporarily living off the land that Mother Nature has so generously provided for. My father and mother also shared this vision so (with his sisters/cousins permission) he purchased her share and the two adjoining lots that were owned by his aunts and combined them so we could have a place to park our trailers in the summertime. The advent of the internet and the resurgence of people wanting to go somewhere with their families to experience the peace and tranquility one can only find in the wilds, led us to feel that sharing this slice of heaven was not only economical but the right thing to do. So much of Kolob and the surrounding areas are marked off by private property, owners who aren’t even there to enjoy it 99% of the time. So we felt divinely called to offer our humble slice of heaven to likeminded individuals, seeking tranquility and peace but for some cosmic reason didn’t stand to inherit private property in the middle of one of the most beautiful places on earth. So welcome friend. We only ask, as you leave this place, to please bring with you this spirit of abundance and joy to wherever you call home.

The place was amazing. We loved all the little details in the place, the quietness, being able to see the stars, and the sauna. Russell was attentive and caring in answering all our questions and a wonderful host. I look forward to coming back. I would highly recommend checking the place out. It’s close to many cool places.

I loved tent camping here. I was traveling solo and it felt very safe and welcoming. I appreciate the details from the hand painted signs to the clear instructions. Jamie was at the camp and was so amazing. She took me on a local hike to see some petroglyphs! The bathrooms are clean and the shower is spacious. At night the property is lit thoughtfully so you can see the stars and see where you are going. It was a perfect jumping off point for Zion. I’ll be back.

This was my second Hipcamp experience! This is a beautiful site, located near beautiful cliffs that caught the light. The host has added some nice touches like solar night lights to help you see your way around. There is work being done on what looks like a multiple bathroom and shower house. Signage is clear and helpful. Most sites are walk in.

The Wright Family Ranch in Zion is a must for anyone seeking adventure! The campsite has a ‘primitive’ style to it with a fire pit at every site, tables at some, and only a few porto potty's. But, in exchange, you get true isolation in the heart of Zion. Watchman Campground gets packed insanely quick, especially on school breaks. This spot was available up until the night of and provided the peace and tranquility I was looking for. The only noise I heard the entire time was the tranquil bells of cows as they moved along the ranch. Not to mention, it’s only like a 10 minute drive away from the entrance to the Subway Hike if anyone is familiar! It is also a ‘primitive’ style hike with untended trails, but it is one of the best hikes Zion has to offer, hands down! The Subway is a sight to behold. So if adventure is your thing and you’re looking for a more ‘primitive’ style trip, then you NEED to come to Bill’s Ranch! It has everything you’ll be looking for. And if you want civilization, the National Park is only a 15-20 minute drive away.

Beautiful campground location. Away from town and nestled up near the mountain. It’s not short on scenery. Our camp site had a bbq, fire pit and picnic table, with a nice sandy spot for a tent. Beautiful trees provide enough shade while the center of the site opens up for incredible stargazing at night. A port-a-potty is available in central proximity of the grounds and near the site of the building (under construction). Serene and peaceful atmosphere is what allows one to relax and enjoy their time.

Such a beautiful spot for Late March. No Bugs, campers are so spread out I felt like I had the place to myself. The stars were amazing, just check your lunar calendar to get a milky way view. Road in and out was dry, no issues with the jeep. Loved hearing the cows bells, but I cant stress just how epic the views are! Best camp site we ever stayed at!!!! Thank you Bill W!!!!! We will be back....

I have been camping all of the u.s. and this was one of my favorite places. You are tucked away in the desert and you pull up to this beautiful inviting campsite. It had a full working kitchen with yes a gas stove and clean bathrooms and an outdoor shower! It was so relaxing and there are hammocks and a fire pit. For the price this is the best deal you’ll get where it is still camping But you don’t feel so remote. Also Tiffany and Jaime were the BEST host they were so hospitable and fun to have there. They both recommended great places to go and made me and my friend so relaxed and safe. Would recommend 12/10

If you are looking to get off grid around Zion and have great views and a peaceful sleep this is your spot. It's an easy drive into Zion even with the rough road for the last 1.5 miles. But it's worth it.

This was the most perfect place to camp! I would recommend it to anyone who is visiting Zion! My sister and I stayed there two nights and got to choose a different place each night. It was beautiful and I will absolutely be back!
