We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away.
Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism.
West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program.
Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths!
Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

Ice and other small provisions are available at the Ranch office. Access to the property requires driving 1 mile on a dirt road, but does not require 4-wheel drive or high clearance vehicles.

A remote, off-grid adobe dome, powered by solar power, and near Big Bend National Park, as seen on HGTV, and numerous other publications.
Brand new to Hipcamp, but we've been fortunate to host over a thousand guests on other platforms.
The Off Grid Dome shelter is accepting rental guests to share the off-grid experience, and to also help fund this project and future projects . The dome is a very remote and unique space in the desert near Big Bend National Park.
The dome rests in an isolated but easily accessible off-grid setting in one of the few remaining territories under a dark sky ordinance, which offers unmatched views of the night sky, and a completely unobstructed view of a horizon that delivers truly majestic sunrises and sunsets. Though the dome is isolated, the entrance to Big Bend National Park is just a 25 minute drive and the historic Terlingua Ghost town about the same.
The dome is an earthen structure, with a cob (adobe) barrier to provide shelter from the desert elements such as heat, cold, winds, and rain.
The small but functional dome kitchen provides a two burner propane stove and oven, as well as a refrigerator that is powered by solar power. In fact, all power to the dome comes directly from a modest solar energy system and will power phones, laptops, and lights, but not much more (no hair dryers for instance). The kitchen sink pumps water from a small rain collection cistern and thus I ask guests to be very strategic with water use. Guests are recommended to bring one's own drinking water, although backup bottled water is provided onsite as a backup at cost.
The Dome bed sleeps two comfortably. Linens, pillows, and a blanket (and a duvet in colder months are provided for the main bed. The pallet couch does sleep a third person quite comfortably, but guests must bring their own linens or sleeping bag (and pillow) for a third guest.
In hotter months, a fan is provided, and the nature of the thick adobe provides a buffer against the Summer temps (with limitations). The wrap around windows provides a good cross breeze and fresh air when needed. In cooler months, a small propane heater is provided for a little extra boost, as well as clean linens and a duvet cover. The dome and linens will not be cleaned during your stay.
There is no flush toilet, and so you must be comfortable using a composting toilet that is in a separate, and private outhouse next to the dome. There is no shower on site, but I can give you recommendations for $2 coin showers in town. Or you can try an outdoor solar bag shower on the property.
There is wifi on site. The property is very accessible by road, with only the last mile being on a gravel road in good condition. Read house rules to learn about amenities.
SUMMERTIME DISCLAIMER (June through September): The Summer can get hot here in the desert and while the adobe dome gives a good buffer against the outside elements, there is no AC in the dome, just a fan. There are also perimeter windows to entice a night breeze. Also, bugs and other desert creatures tend to culminate in the Summer months. Don’t be surprised if you encounter a scorpion or black widow spider and don’t be frightened either as they are relatively harmless and non-threatening. I do have the dome on a somewhat forgiving 5 night out cancelation policy during off-peak periods and so if the 10 day forecast looks too scary for you, you can cancel without penalty. Many say that Summer is their favorite time of the year out here. But it all depends on one's heat tolerance.

We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away.
Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism.
West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program.
Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths!
Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

Brand new to Hipcamp, but we've been fortunate to host over a thousand guests on other platforms.
The Off Grid Dome shelter is accepting rental guests to share the off-grid experience, and to also help fund this project and future projects . The dome is a very remote and unique space in the desert near Big Bend National Park.
The dome rests in an isolated but easily accessible off-grid setting in one of the few remaining territories under a dark sky ordinance, which offers unmatched views of the night sky, and a completely unobstructed view of a horizon that delivers truly majestic sunrises and sunsets. Though the dome is isolated, the entrance to Big Bend National Park is just a 25 minute drive and the historic Terlingua Ghost town about the same.
The dome is an earthen structure, with a cob (adobe) barrier to provide shelter from the desert elements such as heat, cold, winds, and rain.
The small but functional dome kitchen provides a two burner propane stove and oven, as well as a refrigerator that is powered by solar power. In fact, all power to the dome comes directly from a modest solar energy system and will power phones, laptops, and lights, but not much more (no hair dryers for instance). The kitchen sink pumps water from a small rain collection cistern and thus I ask guests to be very strategic with water use. Guests are recommended to bring one's own drinking water, although backup bottled water is provided onsite as a backup at cost.
The Dome bed sleeps two comfortably. Linens, pillows, and a blanket (and a duvet in colder months are provided for the main bed. The pallet couch does sleep a third person quite comfortably, but guests must bring their own linens or sleeping bag (and pillow) for a third guest.
In hotter months, a fan is provided, and the nature of the thick adobe provides a buffer against the Summer temps (with limitations). The wrap around windows provides a good cross breeze and fresh air when needed. In cooler months, a small propane heater is provided for a little extra boost, as well as clean linens and a duvet cover. The dome and linens will not be cleaned during your stay.
There is no flush toilet, and so you must be comfortable using a composting toilet that is in a separate, and private outhouse next to the dome. There is no shower on site, but I can give you recommendations for $2 coin showers in town. Or you can try an outdoor solar bag shower on the property.
There is wifi on site. The property is very accessible by road, with only the last mile being on a gravel road in good condition. Read house rules to learn about amenities.
SUMMERTIME DISCLAIMER (June through September): The Summer can get hot here in the desert and while the adobe dome gives a good buffer against the outside elements, there is no AC in the dome, just a fan. There are also perimeter windows to entice a night breeze. Also, bugs and other desert creatures tend to culminate in the Summer months. Don’t be surprised if you encounter a scorpion or black widow spider and don’t be frightened either as they are relatively harmless and non-threatening. I do have the dome on a somewhat forgiving 5 night out cancelation policy during off-peak periods and so if the 10 day forecast looks too scary for you, you can cancel without penalty. Many say that Summer is their favorite time of the year out here. But it all depends on one's heat tolerance.

This was the perfect desert stay! We were really cozy and protected from all the high winds, and had super easy access to the National Park. It was also nice because it would get cold at night and then warm up for the evening when we got back. Once this container has power I think it will be even more ideal even through the summer too!

Weekend Trip to Temple of the Bird
I stayed in at this hostel for 3 nights during my last trip to Big Bend National Park, and it was a great experience. The location was very convenient and close to the park. The host was super nice, friendly, and very cooperative throughout my stay. The place had all the necessary facilities I needed and was comfortable enough after long days of exploring. I’d definitely recommend it to others visiting the area.

Weekend Trip to Temple of the Bird
I spent three nights in a bunk bed at this hostel during my Big Bend National Park trip and had a very pleasant stay. The hostel is conveniently located close to the park, which made early starts and late returns easy. The host was incredibly kind, welcoming, and always willing to help. Everything I needed was available, and the place was clean and well organized. It’s a solid option for anyone looking for an affordable and comfortable place to stay, and I’d happily recommend it.

Mike has created a welcome and relaxed atmosphere for the weary traveler and the amped up ready to roar hiker/biker! The quarters are comfy, clean and the amenities are too notch. The bathrooms and showers are clean, well designed and more than expected from a “hostel”. This isn’t a hostel, it’s a community where you are met with what you need and expectations are exceeded. 4 nights at Casa de Keaveny Cabin and Campsite
There is something very charming and spiritual about Jim’s cabin and land. As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe and at peace. Jim is a true Texas gem — I could listen to his stories for hours.
The cabin is clean and eclectically decorated. I enjoyed walking around and looking at his collected treasures. It’s in a wonderfully quiet area with no road noise or loud neighbors. It’s very easy to stare off into the mountains and lose yourself in the views, especially at sunrise or sunset. The nighttime sky alone was worth the 10-hour drive.
The Wi-Fi was stronger at this remote cabin than in my own suburban house. It would be very easy to work remotely from here if needed.
It felt like a real privilege to stay here. Jim isn’t going to become a millionaire renting out this cabin at such a low price. It feels like a true labor of love that he’s chosen to share with the world.
You’ll enjoy every minute here and find it hard to leave. I’m already planning next year’s trip.
Items I would bring: lots of drinking water, trash bags, a propane tank (like those used for a gas BBQ grill), and paper towels. Although Jim has all of this stocked, I found myself using more than I normally would and felt bad depleting his supplies.

This is a beautiful spot and Mike is a great host. Super chill vibes at Temple of the Bird. I really enjoyed the full, communal kitchen. Do be aware the last quarter mile or so is unpaved road. Worth it for the view!

This is the best hostel/stay I could have asked for in Terlingua/near Big Bend. Insanely clean everything, insane views, incredible hospitality and we literally booked again a couple days after our stay when we needed another night because we loved it so much. The shipping container bunks were SO COMFY and as a woman I felt incredibly safe and Mike was an amazing host to say the least. Taught us about the locals and the places to eat and drink and we met so many incredible people in Terlingua and our bunk mates were awesome. 110% the place for you if you like getting to know the locals and relaxing with an amazing view of the desert mountains. Literally planning the next trip already lol. If you’re down for a laugh, good folks and good views this is totally for you.

This place is so unique and fun and really captures the spirit of Terlingua. Mike is an incredible host and everyone I met here was so kind and cool. The property is safe, comfortable, clean and has all the amenities you could ask for. My friend and I stayed during a quiet couple days, but will definitely be back to experience a busier time because it looks like SO much fun. You absolutely have to stay here if you’re in the area!

we really enjoyed our two days stayed at Mike's place (temple of the bird). we reached right at the thanksgiving eve and the place was buzzing. food, music, campfire...it was such a cool experience at the heart of terlingua ghost town. If you like mingling with a crowd and make new friends, you are going to enjoy this place. Mike is an awesome host and helped with everything that we asked for. he replied to all my messages promptly and the decked out kitchen was a real plus. We rented the sleeping bunks which were affordable and cozy. terlingua itself is pretty cool with the dark sky and you can see all the stars. one thing to note, it is not exactly close to big bend, and having a car with high clearance, like a 4x4, really helps to move around. i hope i can go back just to stay for a few days and chill. thanks Mike and keep flippin'

Weekend Trip to Cholla Ranch Camp, Glamping Tents
This was hands down one of the best experiences of my life. Emma’s ranch was stunning. The tent was cute, cozy, and so tastefully decorated. There wasn’t any detail missed. Emma was so kind and so responsive to any question I had. She is a great host and truly thinks of everything! (Hot coco with marshmallow, the yummiest snacks, space heaters for cooler nights, bath robes and slippers, bandaids, floss, shampoo, face wash, soaps, sleeping masks, a record player, a heated foot massager, essential oils for aromatherapy and so much more!) As I write this sitting in DFW traffic on our drive back home.. it already has me itching to come back. It was such a breath of fresh air that my husband and I so desperately needed.
Now on to the best part.. the stargazing!
We got to see the Milky Way, Jupiter, Saturn, and so many more stars than we would ever see in the city. It was incredible. Just jaw dropping.
I can’t wait to come back and I’ll be sure to tell everyone I know about this place.

The stars at night are big and bright, at Crows Peak! On our very last night I was standing on the porch of the tent when I encountered some of those “marfa lights”. I was absolutely stunned.

Weekend Trip to Domeland
I booked this stay to get away from day-to-day life and reconnect with nature, and it was everything I hoped for and more. The location is breathtaking — remote enough to feel alone under the endless Texas sky, yet close to both Big Bend National and State Parks.
The dome is stunning and thoughtfully designed, and the property itself is beautiful. You can see the desert stretch out for miles, and even though there are a few neighbors, it still feels private and peaceful. Inside everything was clean and cozy, and I quickly became obsessed with the one-mile loop trail on the property, walking it multiple times because it was truly that lovely.
The sunsets and sunrises were out of this world, not to mention the view of the stars. I cooked on the camp stove (there’s also a charcoal grill so bring charcoal if you’d like to use it) and loved the calm of being offline.
The host was very communicative, and the instructions were clear. Just keep in mind it’s the desert: water is precious, so bring extra and use mindfully. The kitchen has the basics, but bringing your favorite gear is helpful. There’s WiFi inside the Dome but no cell service, so recommend downloading local maps before you go. If you want extra light it doesn’t hurt to bring some nice battery powered lights. It wasn’t an issue but would’ve been a nice touch.
If you’re looking for peace, inspiration, and beauty that reminds you how vast the world is, this place is pure magic. ✨
