Choose from 9 RV spots, 25 tent camping sites with electricity, 50 primitive camping sites, van and car camping sites, many boondocking sites, 3 extra special primitive river side sites, and soon to come glamping sites. 7 RV sites come with full availability to 30/50 amp electricity, water, septic tank, picnic table, bbq grill, high speed wifi, and all sites come with access to amenities such as a resting pavilion with tables and furniture, clean restrooms, full hot/cold showers, large screen tv, cooling fans, outdoor cooking gas grills, Texas sized bbq smoker, dog park, games for kids and adults, a monarch butterfly sanctuary and a new organic farm in the process. Situated 15 minutes from the Port of Entry from Mexico, and 20 minutes from the only Texas casino, the Turtle Ranch is a great waypoint between a series of gorgeous South Texas adventure spots, like the mountains of Garner State Park, the Rivers of Seminole Canyon or the splendid isolation of Big Bend National Park. Originally this was a sheep ranch spanning 1000s of acres. Until the 1980s, migrant workers came to work the sheep, deliver the lambs, and sheer the mamas. In the 50s, the original owner built a small cabin near the main homestead for his oldest son and his new bride, hoping they would stay on to run the ranch, but as youth often do, they left in search of a different type of life. We were fortunate to have opportunity to purchase the cabin and expand to a 3 bedroom home using materials from the original 100+ years ranch house that we carefully dismantled. We moved in a small herd of Dorper sheep, in an attempt to restore some of the original feel of the ranch. Dorpers grow hair, not wool, so they shed and don't require shearing. We delivered our first lamb, Lyle, on February 10, 2021. Frick, our mighty Mexican longhorn bull, manages the small cattle herd that gives the ranch a real Texas feel. He's quite people friendly and loves to poke his head over the fence to pose for photos. The mighty tortoises that inspired the name of the ranch are Juke and Rocky, 30 year old brothers who weigh close to 200 lbs each and will likely outlive us. There are a number of other turtles, wild and domestic, on the property. Guests may feed the big torts and other animals for amazing photo opportunities.

I loved camping on Michael's land, and would return! When we got here, our site was flooded so he allowed us to use another site temporarily while he had mulch and a drain put in so the site could be used even wet. Then, we quickly realized we had no shade and this site wouldn't work, so he let us switch to yet another site that wasn't booked to make our stay much better!! Mike is very accomodating and all around fantastic host! We moved to site 22, Smaugs site right next to the horses, which was definitely a highlight! Mike also provided DE for the ants in the site, and always asking everyone if they needed anything from town. Everyone there is so warm, friendly and welcoming. Truly great people here! The road noise is obnoxious but the host has no control over it, and most nights it's very quiet. The stargazing is OUT of this world, and the nearby small towns are full of kind people. We truly enjoyed our stay of 6 weeks at the shire, even got a chance to watch all extended edition LOTR movies and made memories with my kids. 10/10 would highly recommend this hidden gem!

This is an amazing find and a great weekend getaway! It was my favorite HipCamp find so far. The cabin is very secluded and quiet. The nature trails are beautiful and very well maintained. Leann was very responsive to messages and a great host. There is a gate around the cabin to keep your fur babies close. We had clear skies and enjoyed star gazing in the hot tub. I can’t wait to return!

Pros: I stayed with Smaug for 2 weeks and it was perfect. I loved being next to the horses. I got to see the total lunar eclipse because of all the OPEN skies here. The location is perfect if you want to spend time in San Antonio and the surrounding area. There is so much history here. Mike is a great host and all I had to do was ask if I needed something. You can’t beat the price for all the amenities you get. Cons: I wish there had been more grass but it’s hard to grow in a drought. A picnic table would have been nice. Some sites have them.

The beauty of this hill country land is amazing. Quiet and peaceful. My family and I enjoyed the clear water of the swimming hole, it was cool but perfect when the sun was over us. Wilson is very nice, helpful and fun guy! He was a great guide showing us all around the property and giving us options as to our campsite. There’s plenty of space for small or large groups. We got the opportunity to enjoy the less rough off-road trails and saw some beautiful views. If you’re lucky enough like we were, you’ll get to enjoy all the adventures this property has to offer.

Everfree Shire Ranch is an 11 acre estate nestled between quiet country houses and a very active horse ranch next door to the east. Rescue horses are also kept on the property in rotation. Much of the camping here is still a work in progress! So for now, a very private economical choice for campers! The central building has indoor lodging available and the side bathroom with indoor toilet / washer / dryer may be used by campers as well. A new outdoor shower is 95% complete and usable but swimwear is required because we have not finished filling in the slots between the wood fence panels. The RV Dump station is also ready for use as well as the new outhouse! If you forgot to dump on the way out or need to before arriving, please use the free dump stations on I-35 near Natalia on either side of the highway.

We welcome you to come enjoy the seclusion and dark sky on a working cattle/exotic hunting ranch in the Texas Hill Country.  My great great grandfather established this ranch in the late 1870's and our family still lives here today.  We are located in Real county just north of Leakey, Texas on US Highway 83.  Our campsites are on the head waters of the West prong of the Frio River.  Our Grapevine Springs have continuous flow the year round.  You will enjoy the gurgling creek, hiking, swimming, solitude and our sunrises and sunsets, and big and bright stars in the night sky.  We have tall hills and hardwood trees, Spanish oaks, Escarpment Cherry, Black walnut, live oaks and other oaks.  We have wild animals; white tail deer, turkey, hogs and exotics and seasonally songbirds and butterflies on the ranch.  We are close to Lost Maples State Nature Area and Garner State Park.**Make sure your vehicle has plenty of clearance.
