Rio Bravo Ranch is a family owned ranch that borders the Rio Grande and Casa Piedra Road. We have cultured a love for camping and the outdoors on this ranch as children and young adults. One day we were sitting on "the backside," enjoying the amazing vistas, solitude and a campfire when the idea came to us that we should share this amazing place with others seeking this type of experience. We tried to think about what makes camping enjoyable to us - no immediately adjacent campers, a nice fire ring/shade structure, a nice, large tent site and vistas with unobstructed views. We have incorporated this into our campground design which, when completely finished, will encompass several hundred acres of Chihuahuan desert vistas. We are also fortunate enough to have a large riparian area on the property. It is in this area, amongst the 40ft tall cottonwood and willows, we often find Gambel's Quail, Scaled Quail, Javelina and numerous bird species including the occasional turkey. We would love nothing more than to share this wonderful place, where we grew up, with souls seeking solitude, adventure and inspiration. Our eastern entrance is just a few miles outside the Big Bend Ranch State Park boundary, conveniently located on Casa Piedra road about 1.6 miles north of FM 170.

The Tierra del Sol Basecamp is an open desert camping area located within Terlingua Ranch, 3 miles off of Hwy 118, 19 miles north of Study Butte and 22 miles to the entrance to Big Bend National Park. This region of far west Texas is well known for its remote ruggedness and beauty rapidly becoming the go-to place for those wanting to get away from it all, without having to spend a fortune to do it. In the center is an area of approximately 6 acres flat, with rising limestone ridge lines to the east and west, open skyline to south with a view of Bofecillos Mountains, an area characterized by volcanic deposits of lava and ash-flow tuff and sedimentary deposits of conglomerates and sandstones. The four mountain tops; Packsaddle, Hen Egg, Panther and Agua Fria Mountains provide an amazing view during the day and at night, breathtaking night time views of the Milky Way and the multitudes of stars to gaze upon unlike any other place in North America. The morning sunrise over the eastern mesa brings its own spectacular views. Surrounding the 40 acres are many things of archaeological wonder. A Rock Hounds dream of minerals, stones and fossilized prehistoric microorganisms, as well as, the potential of finding the fossils of large prehistoric aquatic mammals. Yes, you are free to take a small sample of the thousands of quartz and calcite stones found in huge abundance.
As you come to then end of Mailbox Rd., you'll see a residence to your left. This is "The Field Lab", owned by the well know sustainable engineer John Wells. If you'd like to pay him a visit, please contact him in advance.

We offer a uniquely secluded setting with stunning views of the Chisos Mountains. Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away.
Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism.
West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program.
Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths!

This was our second stay at Goat Pens. Jeff's got a great piece of land here where you're close to everything in Terlingua but it's all tucked into a bowl area where you don't see any surrounding lights from other properties thanks to the low ridge bordering the sites. The dark skies are incredible, and sites, restrooms and shower were super clean.

Cool, offbeat campground within a short walk to Ghosttown. Friendly, helpful owner Elena on site . Dog friendly. Natural landscaping. No facilities so bring in plenty of water. Hard to find after dark and with minimal signing so arrive before dusk. Enjoyed two nights here with insane stargazing.

We loved camping here. The timing was perfect for us after being on the road for a few days--the showers were awesome! Our dog enjoyed the quiet, and the sunrise and sunset were both beautiful. We had no problems with our AWD van, and the directions were clear. If we're ever in the area again, we will definitely stay here.

Jackass Flats is a great camping spot close to Big Bend NP, but out of the hubbub of the park or tourist hubs like Study Butte. Twenty miles from the park border, they have four RV spots with optional water and electricity. And you’re camped at one of the very few stores in the Big Bend area. The host, Pam, and the store staff are friendly, helpful and prompt to reply to requests and questions. Though Jackass Flats is on one of the main roads to Big Bend, traffic noise is minimal, especially at night. I would gladly stay there again if visiting Big Bend NP.

Elena’s park is a bit of a gem. Not huge but it was perfect for us. We just purchased a new Casita and needed a place near Big Bend to check things out.
On our first night, there was a blip in electric service. She came over to help troubleshoot with no luck, and then service was back. Turns out, the electric company was at fault.
The day before we left, our fresh water tank was empty. Elena went above and beyond in helping to fill our tank.
About the only downside in coming in off the highway, the road is rough and rutted, but not the fault of Elena.

My family of 5 plus a dog rolled in to our campsite early afternoon and had no trouble finding it with Lauren's helpful instructions. The site is surrounded on 3 sides by a steep drop into arroyos - worth noting if you have kids. The older kids (6 and 8) loved scrambling up and down and all around but it was too steep for the littlest one. The tent site was level and relatively free of big rocks, the ground is hard scrabble so you will probably want your tent pegs that screw in or maybe your mallet. The views were beautiful and we enjoyed wandering around on the property every night after dinner. The potty is far enough away that you will probably want to drive if you have little kids who can't hold it for a 10 minute walk, but we enjoyed being far enough away that we felt truly in the middle of nowhere. The other campsites aren't far, but they are far enough that you don't need to interact with your neighbors. Our pup enjoyed running around the place as much as the kids.

We had a great stay! Jeff kept in contact with us to make sure we had the directions since cell service is spotty. Very quiet spot, perfect to disconnect and enjoy a nice fire! Location is perfect since it’s in between the Big Bend National Park and Big Bend State Park. Additionally it’s not far (maybe 10 mins) from restaurants in Terlingua or the dollar general in case you forgot to pack any essentials, but still just out far enough to enjoy the quiet! Would highly recommend for a dispersed site, with a nice bonus of amenities like bathrooms and showers! We will be going back for sure!

Everything was exactly as advertised. Karen was friendly and welcoming and shared lots of great local recommendations! The property is very close to Terlingua, yet far enough from the highway that it felt peaceful and quiet. We stayed four nights at Site 2 and had no neighbors, which made it feel very private.
The tent site is about a 2–3 minute walk from the parking area, which was the only minor downside for us since we like to bring our large cooler and water jug when spending full days outside, so hauling it back and forth everyday took some effort. Otherwise, the site was conveniently close to both the bathroom and parking. The facilities were clean and well maintained, and the hot shower was a big plus!
Funny story: Karen did warn us to keep things and food secured from animals (including her dog Mojo), and we accidentally left our paper towels and leftover tacos outside while showering one night (totally our fault). He found them, but he’s the sweetest dog and we couldn’t help but laugh it off. We happened to be there during a full moon, so we missed out on the darkest skies, but overall this was a great basecamp for exploring both the national and state parks!
