GET AWAY without going FAR AWAY! Feels like the middle of nowhere, but it's only 25 miles to downtown Austin and 15 miles to the charming little town of Bastrop with its eateries, shops and historic buildings. Spend quiet nights in the country listening to the coyotes howl and the owls hoot. Hike the nearby Roughs (trailhead is 2 miles away) or book a river canoe or kayak trip with one of the local outfitters. Bring the family and have a weekend event under the trees and covered shade of our Pony Pavilion! Hollis and her wonderful voice, great stories and powerful ukuleles now offer LIVE MUSIC by your very own campfire, for your private enjoyment. (See the EXTRAS category to book a $20/45 minute/weather-permitting show, or a 1-hour Ukulele lesson, or just get with Hollis when you show up at camp) Enjoy the park trails, the Happy Horse on-site Scavenger Hunt, the delightful maze of campground trails (on your bikes!) and the peace and quiet! Happy Horse Hotel is on 22 acres conveniently located between Austin and Bastrop in the Pope Bend of the Colorado River. LCRA's fabulous McKinney Roughs Nature Park is 2 miles up the road, adjacent to the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort. Just featured on CBS's show "STAYCATION!" Enchantment and tranquility embody our Whimsical Lakeside Romantic Retreat property nestled in the hill country on Lake Travis, just outside of Austin, TX. This magical space is the perfect backdrop for a variety of special events, including weddings, corporate retreats, yoga and mindfulness retreats, reunions, birthdays, girl's weekends and bachelorette parties, & many other special occasions. 7 total accommodations starring a Luxury Straw Bale Villa, 3 Eco-Cabins, a Cottage, and 2 Unique Safari Tents. Our main house, 'La Casa de Joy,' is a stunning luxury straw bale villa (once featured on HGTV) that is truly the perfect gathering space for a variety of special occasions and memorable events. Originally built by an artist & healer, her creative intention and style is felt throughout the entire property. Living Waters is blessed with an abundance of nature, including deer, birds, butterflies, crickets, hummingbirds, & more. You may wake up to the deer sleeping just outside your accommodation. Indulge you and your group by taking advantage of our on-site private yoga, massage, personal training, and facial services, and kayak, canoe, and stand-up paddle board rentals. We recommend local activities such as a wine tasting at Stone House Vineyard (walking distance), a swim/picnic at Krause Springs spring-fed pool, or an eco-adventure at Cypress Valley Canopy Tours. This unique property is a tranquil and rejuvenating respite in the hill country on Lake Travis, therefore it's not ideal for loud parties. We love animals, but we are a non-pet-accommodating property due to the abundant wildlife present. We look forward to making memories with you....

Off Grid Immersion Camp

9 sites · Lodging, Tents85 acres · Dale, TX
****Recent Update**** Due to new adjacent properties developments, and new neighbors moving in nearby, there are occasional neighboring barking, music and gunshots that can be heard from the distance, which is pretty common out in the countryside here. *************************************************************************************** There is currently a group of 10 people who spend the majority of our time living and striving to create community on these 85 beautiful acres of land. Our goals are to establish a thriving community, grow most of our own food, build tiny houses to rent or sell, create sustainability and be as self sufficient as possible, salvage material for builds, host events and retreats, teach classes, and more. Please feel free to ask questions and share any interest you may have in what we are doing here. Our property is a densely forested 85 acres with a walk-able 2 miles around the perimeter of the property and many trails and hidden nooks to explore throughout the heart of this beautiful escape back to our natural roots. We are in the process of mapping out the trails- which we plan to make available soon! For now those of you with a sense of adventure and desire to explore will certainly be satisfied. We have a full acre size pond and a kayak that you can feel free to use. There is a communal area around the pond that we will be adding to in the near future- you may run into some of our community members or other campers there from time to time, we invite you to socialize, bring a chair, perhaps a beverage or snack and get to know each other and us as well if we cross paths! You will observe and encounter wildlife in abundance including a variety of birds, wild hogs, opossums, armadillo, moles, spiders, scorpions, butterflies, praying mantis, walking sticks, snakes- keep an eye out for rattlesnakes and copperheads, deer, many insects, and more. Please be cautious and treat these creatures' home with respect for them as well as yourselves. Our property is also home to some lovely cows, chickens, a few dogs, and several cats- they (other than the cows who do what they please) generally remain in areas away from our camp sites though they may still decide to stop by to say hello! We have many spaces available for camping throughout the property. These are primitive campsites on raw land so you will need to provide your own tent, water, food, and operate with a leave no trace mentality when camping here. There are areas that can accommodate large groups of campers as well as very secluded nooks if you are looking for a private retreat into nature. There is plenty of fallen wood available for firewood and a fire pit will be prepared for you before arrival!

Cabins in Lake Travis guide

Overview

Arguably the most popular of the Hill Country lakes, Lake Travis is a natural playground for Austinites. Stretching along the Colorado River from Hudson Bend to Pace Bend Park, this sprawling recreation area has everything you need for a summer vacation. Take to the water to swim, boat, or kayak, have fun at the water park and zipline course, or play a game of golf by the lakeside before checking out the lakefront restaurants and cocktail bars. Campers have options, whether you prefer an RV resort with full amenities, an eco glampsite, or a quiet tent site at Arkansas Bend or Windy Point parks.

Where to go

Texas Hill Country

The rolling hills, wildflower meadows, and vineyards of Texas Hill Country surround Lake Travis. Set out on a scenic hike or bike ride through the hills, cool off with a swim at Hamilton Pool or Pedernales Falls, or enjoy wine tasting along the Hill Country Wine Trail. There are hike-in tent sites and electric hookup RV sites at Pedernales Falls State Park, but for something more unique, opt for a quirky glampsite or camp on a country farm.

Austin & Around

The state capital is little more than a half-hour drive from Lake Travis, making it easy to take in the highlights on a day trip. Austin has more than its fair share of green spaces, whether you want to rent a paddleboat or stand-up paddleboard on Lady Bird Lake, cool off with a swim at Barton Springs or Deep Eddy Pools, or go birding at the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge. On the outskirts of the city, McKinney Falls State Park is a favorite for campers, with hiking, biking trails, and fishing spots, as well as cabin rentals.

Along the Colorado River

The Colorado River winds its way north from Lake Travis, dotted with golf courses, vineyards, and recreation areas where you can pitch a tent or launch your boat away from the summer crowds. RV resorts, houseboat rentals, and lakeside restaurants cluster around Horseshoe Bay, while the hills around Buchanan Lake and Inks Lake State Park have great hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails.

San Antonio & Around

Two hours south of Lake Travis, San Antonio is known for its Alamo and RiverWalk, but it’s also the gateway to some of the Hill Country’s most scenic camping getaways. Head to Garner State Park to fish, kayak, and admire the fall foliage, get your adrenaline fix tubing and mountain biking at Guadalupe River State Park, or escape the crowds at the walk-in tent sites in the Government Canyon State Natural Area. For city camping, there are basic tent and RV sites at Calaveras Lake and Braunig Lake just south of downtown.
