Weekend Trip to Mockingbird Farms

Mockingbird Farms is beautiful, safe, and serene. We had everything we needed in the bunkhouse for “glamping,” but I think tent camping here would also be a great experience. The farm has donkeys, horses, and goats — they are all super gentle and love people, and the host gave us animal crackers to feed them! Everything was very comfortable — plenty of hot water in the outdoor shower, AC unit in the bunkhouse, super comfortable bed. The host Cait was great to communicate with before the trip, and we got to visit with her for a bit on the property, she is so nice! Quick, easy access to the nearby towns (Somerset and Poteet) for meals and gas / dollar stores if you forgot to pack something. I believe this property would be very safe for solo campers, as well. I can’t recommend Mockingbird Farms enough — we’ll definitely be back!

This is truly the best dam spot that I have ever camped at. The sound of the falls and the refreshing water. This place will certainly help you to reset. And the host was super nice and helpful. This magical place does not disappoint!! I will definitely be going back.

Not much to say, we pulled in late and left early. Probably could have parked on the side of the road, but I hate getting woken up and having to move. James the host was responsive and helpful. The place looked pretty killer for a nice getaway. It's not a typical campground, it's private land with outhouses and sites with firepits. Very reminiscent of a Baja situation. Host says he locks the gate at night but I couldn't confirm. Overall I'd recommend

This property was so beautiful! Highly recommend the Ashe juniper location for the farthest back and most secluded location! The woods/trees you walk through to get there is so amazing. David was such a gem giving a quick tour of the property and amenities. I’ve stayed at a few different Hipcamp locations around San Antonio, and this is by far our favorite! Will be back again!

Weekend Trip to Lost Woods

We stayed twice this season so far and it's honestly a fast favorite! We have a small 16' teardrop that fits perfectly for use at sites 1, 2, 3, 6, & 8. Our 1st trip was with some friends, their kids and our dogs at sites 6, 7, & 8 at the recommendation of the owner. Perfect to sit at the shaded campfire space @ 8 with space for everyone's tent! The 2nd trip was for a family birthday camping with some dogs as well @ site 1 - which was adjusted to site 2 to be further from the entrance road. James is always very responsive and easy to communicate with for anything! Notes for potential campers: - IT IS JUST THE WOODS...in the suburbs. There is the convenience of access to stores if you forgot something but once you are on site, there is 1 port-a-potty (cleaned 1/wk?) that is within a 5-10 minute walk from any site. No water connections & no electricity. Great "tester" for introducing people to camping b/c of the safety net of being so close to civilization. - Most sites VERY well shaded. If you are in site 1 or 2 I recommend bringing a canopy because the sites are cleared pretty well. - Road is very accessible but it is a dirt/rock road. More uneven and larger rock than gravel. - Sites 4-8 have the least road noise, with the lowest road noise being at 8. - Carpool for groups as much as possible. Parking (except at 1, 3, or 8) limited. - 8+ppl tents: Sites 1-4 & 8 have space for at least 2 tents; site 6 (maybe 5?) for 1 tent; sites 5 & 7 poss. but tight - Very walkable!

This was a great camping spot! We appreciated Michelle's communication and flexibility. The views (especially the sunset) were amazing and while there were other guests staying on the property, we had a secluded spot that made us feel like we had the place to ourselves. The bathrooms were a huge plus as well. The swimming hole was impressive although a little chilly for the March weather, but such a beautiful spot to relax. We enjoyed our stay!

We usually do overnight camping at state parks, but this was SO much better! The views and sounds of the dam waterfall were great. My husband caught some fish. Our kids had the best time, both in the water and exploring on land. The sand boat and rope swing were hits! I was nervous about the outdoor shower, but it was lovely! Felt so nice to wash the river off before hopping in our sleeping bags both nights. Laura and her family were welcoming and hospitable. They have a really special place, and I am happy they have chosen to share it with the rest of us! Such a cool spot; a great example of why I love Texas so much. It was really hard to leave. I hope we can return again soon!

My family & I had the best time tent camping! First the waterfall/ dam is so gorgeous! Waking up to this view is so serene. Only 4 camp sites, so get there early to secure the one you like best. However there aren’t any “bad” camp sites. We arrived late ( how my fam rolls) and Laura met us there. Giving us a tour of the property & our camp site, answering all questions, giving background on the property. There are so many amenities: Kayaking, Paddle boarding, Tubing (Byot), random lovely comfy swings over the river, boat sand box, trampoline, Beach area to enter water, electricity from dusk to dawn ( BYOextension cord). They even provide large wagons to haul your tent, camping supplies to the campsite. We will 💯 book here again. I give this host & camp spot 500 hundred stars✨⭐️🌟🌠✨⭐️. It absolutely is THE BEST DAMN SPOT!

We had a fabulous time camping at Lara’s. The site is beautiful and there are special touches everywhere. The use of the kayaks and paddle boards make this a great value stay, easy to fill the days or visit nearby Lockhart for shopping and food. I’ve recommended it to everyone I know and would love to go back sometime! Also the portajohn is kept very clean and serviced well and there’s something kept in there that makes it smell great.

Pros: I stayed with Smaug for 2 weeks and it was perfect. I loved being next to the horses. I got to see the total lunar eclipse because of all the OPEN skies here. The location is perfect if you want to spend time in San Antonio and the surrounding area. There is so much history here. Mike is a great host and all I had to do was ask if I needed something. You can’t beat the price for all the amenities you get. Cons: I wish there had been more grass but it’s hard to grow in a drought. A picnic table would have been nice. Some sites have them.

Everfree Shire Ranch

Everfree Shire Ranch is an 11 acre estate nestled between quiet country houses and a very active horse ranch next door to the east. Rescue horses are also kept on the property in rotation. Much of the camping here is still a work in progress! So for now, a very private economical choice for campers! The central building has indoor lodging available and the side bathroom with indoor toilet / washer / dryer may be used by campers as well. A new outdoor shower is 95% complete and usable but swimwear is required because we have not finished filling in the slots between the wood fence panels. The RV Dump station is also ready for use as well as the new outhouse! If you forgot to dump on the way out or need to before arriving, please use the free dump stations on I-35 near Natalia on either side of the highway.

Mockingbird Farms

Heavily wooded acreage with goats, horses and donkeys. There is no light pollution and if there are no clouds you can see the stars very clearly. We have a ton of wild birds. Owls and Cara Cara are common. There are deer, feral hog and two resident packs of coyote. We also have ring tail cats, which are nocturnal and rare. The best seasons are October 1st thru the end of April. It gets VERY hot and dry in the summer and can just be miserable. We have a shared bathroom and an outdoor shower and tub. If you are a single woman or a family with children, we don't take other bookings while you are visiting the farm. You will have the place to yourselves. The only exception being my family and I, if we are working or staying over at the farm. We should have a second bunkhouse up and running by fall of 2025. If you are tent camping, you may camp anywhere on the property but there are certain spaces that may make curious horses your roomies.

We’ve transformed 45 acres of what was once an active rock quarry just 15 years ago, into a healthy, regenerative, green space as well as an event and training venue. Our venue is nestled in the middle of the rapidly growing suburban landscape around us in north San Antonio. We purchased the property five years ago from good friends who had already started the mission of revitalizing the land. Today, 39 of the acres are in “preservation” status, which means that we are letting the natural micro-ecosystems that have developed from what remained of the quarrying activities 15 years ago to develop on their own. Gated property offers a glimpse of the country life while still being close enough to town. Get outside the hustle and bustle of San Antonio, and enjoy a family friendly stay at one of our RV spots, or our fully furnished 2 bedroom guesthouse. Set at the back of our 5 acre property, there are 2 RV sites that include water and 50 amp service. Septic available as well. Plenty of space to stretch your legs and stay a while. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. Pets that are self contained to your RV welcome. Dogs welcome if kept on a leash at all times. (We require this because we have free range chickens and turkeys, as well as pigs, horses, and our own dogs). We have a 2BR/1BA guesthouse that is fully furnished if your RV has to go in the shop or you have family that wants to visit. It has a king bed, queen bed, and sleeper sofa in the living room. Handicap accessible walk in shower. -------------------------------------------------------- We are located just to the east of San Antonio in Adkins. Just 14 miles to Randolph AFB, and 17 miles to Ft Sam Houston. Great spot for military PCS, TDY, and PIT! Although shorter stays are available, monthly+ stays do have priority. -------------------------------------------------------- A little about us... We live on site with our 4 children (and a gaggle of animals). We are both Air Force Veterans. After leaving active duty, we traveled the country full time from 2017-2021 in our RV with our kids. We hope to provide a space that our fellow RVers can relax and feel right at home. And for our fellow full time families, also a safe space for kids to run and play, and just be kids!
