Weekend Trip to Magical Lakefront Retreat Property

The bunkhouse was clean and comfortable. We had everything we needed for our few days away. Grounds were peaceful and quiet, perfect for watching deer and hummingbirds from our little deck. Paddling the lake was just lovely. Highly recommend.

We loved camping the primitive site by the river. The trail to get there was short and clear, the views were beautiful. Getting in to the river was easy and they have a ladder you can enter. There were conveniently chairs and fire pits and charcoal grills available. We enjoyed exploring the river but couldn’t float as the river was extremely low and shallow. Water was hot due to it being summer but it was still fun! Host was very polite and helpful!!

I loved the great scenery of the farm, getting and getting welcomed by the chickens and rosters. It was awesome to have a spot to shower as well. Buying fresh eggs from their farm was also a nice bonus before we left the farm. The lake was so peaceful and the water was at a great temperature to jump into or fish at.

The area was beautiful and the tent bed and cots were so comfy! Everything was so thought out, the hang out area with fire pit, grill and cooking utensils. Daniel was very welcoming and we were able to walk around the property to meet the cows and donkey- adorable!

We had a great time camping here. We were the only people on the entire property, so we had our run of the place. We actually ended up picking site #1 instead of #3. (The photo is of site #1). The property is big enough that even if all 6 sites were fully rented out, you would have complete privacy in whichever site you use. There's a bathroom & shower on the property which was nice & clean. It's a dirt road to sites 2-6, and I think for sites 4-6 you may be better off with a higher clearance vehicle and/or 4WD. You might be OK without it, but I'd say it's borderline through one little spot after site 3 where you cross a very small creek then drive up a hill. Overall this is a great property and I highly recommend it.

It was everything that was advertised. Mr Daniel is a great communicator, very quick with responses. He was Very helpful considering we got lost, Google maps fault, but was able to get us there. The host met us at the gate and made us feel very welcomed, even though it was a bit after midnight. When we returned from sightseeing, we had fresh firewood and the picnic table umbrella was up..VERY WELCOMING.

We loved our first camping experience at McDonald’s Farm! We had a group of all ages and everyone enjoyed it. There was so much space and a lot of animals for us to see and enjoy. We even had our dogs with us and it went great they loved the land! Communication was also super great with them and it made our experience so much smoother. The tent sites are really nice and quiet. We visited for a gravel race in Hico and it was perfect as the home base. The showers and community house were great as well. The host was very accomodating, responsive and friendly.

What an incredible place! We definitely made some core memories here with our boys. The hosts went above and beyond to make sure we had a comfortable stay and the check in process was a breeze. There are showers and a portopotty, which was impeccably clean. We loved seeing all of the animals and even picked up some fresh eggs for breakfast! The river site was something out of a book. It was cool in the shade with a nice breeze from the river. Our son went fishing and caught a beautiful bass along with several other fish! We will most definitely be back! Thank you both so much for an amazing camping experience!

Man this was such an awesome experience with surprises that didn't disappoint. We only booked this spot for convenience. Got there and found out that they had their own crappie house....which is free for anyone staying at HiLine. Also, they have boat launcher available. Need a guide? They have local recommendations. It was so serene. We stayed an extra couple of days. Oh and the restaurant King Krabz on the Lake left us desiring more. I'm not sure how they get the crabs so fresh all the way out here, but let me tell you something....everything on the menu is superb. We went there 2 nights and didn't have leftovers. Suzanne and Jim are freaking awesome. Can't wait to go back!

Adirondack chairs and a hammock area is just out back (lakeside). - The Grand Tesoro: Private hill country view across the properties ravine. Located closest to the bathhouse, very central on our property. Also near the common areas. A private chiminea fire area under a grove of trees is nearby. The price for Grand tents is based on double or triple occupancy. A fourth guest is welcome for an additional fee ($50/nt), which you’ll see at booking. The Mini Aztec: Located between the Grand Aztec and Grand Arrow tents, with a private view of the lake and hills, and a private chiminea area. For younger children (age 8+) who want to sleep in the mini tent, we recommend the Grand Arrow for the parents because the mini is within view of the Grand Arrow porch. The Grand Tents have a maximum occupancy of 3 guests. We may allow for a fourth guest upon request for an additional fee ($50/nt). We are now offering daytime river access to the San Gabriel River! This is a secluded, hike to spot for fishing, swimming, grilling, picnicing, and hanging out during the day. Access to our river site is included in your camping fee, or we offer day passes for non-campers! There is no overnight camping on the San Gabriel River. All camping is at the main farm area and campers are able to come and go from the river site as they please. McDonald Farm sits in the historic farming community of Jonah, TX between Georgetown and Taylor on scenic Highway 29. McDonald Farm is named after the patriarch of the family, J.H. Mcdonald, who first acquired the property in 1911. The farm sits on the bank of the San Gabriel River and features a lush canopy of huge pecan trees, sprawling corn fields, prairie, and forest. We are a working farm! We primarily grow corn, but we also have livestock on the property. During daytime hours, you will likely see a variety of farm chores being completed. We are only 7 miles from the Georgetown, TX historical district and square. Some say it’s the most beautiful town square in all of Texas. Enjoy shopping, dining, and festivals! We are 13 miles from Granger Lake, which offers boating and bass fishing opportunities. Highway 29 and the many quaint and scenic country roads that intersect it is popular with cyclists wanting to go for longer rides and enjoy the sights of central Texas and the many historical farms in the area. There is excellent bird-watching and wildlife-viewing opportunities on the property. We frequently see white-tailed deer, as well as other wildlife and many species of birds. There is road noise. There is 2 docks to swim, fish, or just to relax on. One of the docks has underwater fishing lights too. Come out and sit on the docks for your morning sunrise! The cabins are some of the last old fishing camps from the 1950's that have been remodeled. They are very up to date and come fully furnished. Very spacious and comfortable for a nice relaxing stay. The house is very spacious. So much room to spread out and not be cramped up. Large patio with a table and chairs, gas BBQ grill, very nice large round fire pit, boat ramp if you bring your boat, and fully equipped kitchen.
