Situated 15 minutes from the Port of Entry from Mexico, and 20 minutes from the only Texas casino, the Turtle Ranch is a great waypoint between a series of gorgeous South Texas adventure spots, like the mountains of Garner State Park, the Rivers of Seminole Canyon or the splendid isolation of Big Bend National Park. Originally this was a sheep ranch spanning 1000s of acres. Until the 1980s, migrant workers came to work the sheep, deliver the lambs, and sheer the mamas. In the 50s, the original owner built a small cabin near the main homestead for his oldest son and his new bride, hoping they would stay on to run the ranch, but as youth often do, they left in search of a different type of life. We were fortunate to have opportunity to purchase the cabin and expand to a 3 bedroom home using materials from the original 100+ years ranch house that we carefully dismantled. We moved in a small herd of Dorper sheep, in an attempt to restore some of the original feel of the ranch. Dorpers grow hair, not wool, so they shed and don't require shearing. We delivered our first lamb, Lyle, on February 10, 2021. Frick, our mighty Mexican longhorn bull, manages the small cattle herd that gives the ranch a real Texas feel. He's quite people friendly and loves to poke his head over the fence to pose for photos. The mighty tortoises that inspired the name of the ranch are Juke and Rocky, 30 year old brothers who weigh close to 200 lbs each and will likely outlive us. There are a number of other turtles, wild and domestic, on the property. Guests may feed the big torts and other animals for amazing photo opportunities.

To access the property, pull in the first gate to circle around and pull through, when you exit, you can pull straight out through the gate in front of you. Throughout your stay, please use the second gate to come and go in order to minimize intrusion on guest at the cottage. You can leave the gate open. Please use local wood and confirm with Edwards County as to whether there is a fire ban or not. You have your private patio overlooking the river and there is a firepit there, River Cliff Trail. You have your private designated area, but there could be guest at the cottage and the river is not private. Please respect the neighbors by observing quite times from 10 pm - 10 am. Also, the river is yours to roam, but venturing very far off the river might be trespassing, unless of course, you are on the Labyrinth. You do not have access to the cottage yard area. Situated 15 minutes from the Port of Entry from Mexico, and 20 minutes from the only Texas casino, the Turtle Ranch is a great waypoint between a series of gorgeous South Texas adventure spots, like the mountains of Garner State Park, the Rivers of Seminole Canyon or the splendid isolation of Big Bend National Park. Originally this was a sheep ranch spanning 1000s of acres. Until the 1980s, migrant workers came to work the sheep, deliver the lambs, and sheer the mamas. In the 50s, the original owner built a small cabin near the main homestead for his oldest son and his new bride, hoping they would stay on to run the ranch, but as youth often do, they left in search of a different type of life. We were fortunate to have opportunity to purchase the cabin and expand to a 3 bedroom home using materials from the original 100+ years ranch house that we carefully dismantled. We moved in a small herd of Dorper sheep, in an attempt to restore some of the original feel of the ranch. Dorpers grow hair, not wool, so they shed and don't require shearing. We delivered our first lamb, Lyle, on February 10, 2021. Frick, our mighty Mexican longhorn bull, manages the small cattle herd that gives the ranch a real Texas feel. He's quite people friendly and loves to poke his head over the fence to pose for photos. The mighty tortoises that inspired the name of the ranch are Juke and Rocky, 30 year old brothers who weigh close to 200 lbs each and will likely outlive us. There are a number of other turtles, wild and domestic, on the property. Guests may feed the big torts and other animals for amazing photo opportunities.

This ranch is in an absolutely beautiful location. We visited over the Halloween weekend with the native fall grasses in full beauty. At night we sat, had some wine, looked at the stars, counted satellites as they passed over and listened to the coyotes off in the distance. This is a great location to slow down and just get away.

Carlos was an exceptional Host, I recommend getting In touch with him before booking because their live site doesn’t sync with hip camp so you run the risk of their not being availability. With that being said I reached Carlos before booking and he accommodated me last minute and was extremely attentive and helpful throughout the stay. Not to mention the included river access was a huge benefit and we enjoyed every minute of our stay!!

We used their full RV hookup and it all worked well. In my opinion it is a beautiful ranch. It has pretty views of large hills in every direction. There are several tanks (small lakes) that all had water in them. I think they are all on the same creek that must be spring fed. I met a few of the ranch family members. They were all friendly, helpful and likeable. The main roads to get into the ranch and on the ranch were good and in good shape. We enjoyed feeding Tye the pig. The two cabins are nice. For the most part we had the ranch to ourselves to explore. It was a nice place to relax.

It's a rustic and mellow spot with some cool animals hanging around. Occasional truck noise from the road, but it was mostly quiet with a view of the night sky. Arrive stocked up because there is no shopping nearby. I would stay here again if coming through Eagle Pass.

What an amazing lil gem in the hill country. They only have a few RV spots available but if you want to come as a group they have plenty of cabins and tent sites available. The water was crystal clear and cold lol. We're looking forward to coming back in the summer. Of course it didn't stop me from getting into the water to fish. We caught bass and perch. The little town is so cute and the BBQ joint was amazing. We truly loved our stay.
