Learn more about this land: This wooded area is 5 miles away from the Ohiopyle State Park whitewater launch area and GAP bike trail. We are less than 9 miles from Frank Lloyd Wright's Classic Fallingwater and about 8 miles from Kentuck Knob one of the last resident homes he designed (both are open for tours). Fort Necessity National Battlefield is 5 miles away. There are numerous native trout streams in the area. Youghiogheny Reservoir is 7 miles away for fishing, boat rentals, and water-sports. The Fern House is the primary camp cabin on the property. Although if someone would want to park a "self contained" camper or small RV on the property we would permit the unit to occupy the area in front of the driveway just pass the entrance gate. It is not within the ferns and is next to the road. There is an electrical outlet available at this small RV or van camper site. We are "nice pet" friendly. Dogs should not be left in the cabin alone. We have a mountain spring (when the spring is running) up the trail road (450 feet away). The ferns will normally be in full glory by the end of May to mid September and are amazing, covering the forest floor. Deer, bear, wild turkey, fox, chipmunks, squirrels and many woodland birds abound the property especially owls. A picnic table, fire ring and firewood is available on the property. Free WiFi on the property as long as the plant life is not too thick! There is a mile hiking loop right on the property and many challenging trails in the area, including the starting point for the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail. No smoking is permitted in the cabin. The property adjoins thousands of acres of Garrett State Forest and hundreds of acres of state land along the Youghiogheny River. The world class Wisp resort and Deep Creek Lake are only minutes away. “Yough” is short for Youghiogheny River a state designated wild and scenic river which runs through the heart of the property. Wild Yough Glamping huts are part of more than 350 acres of private land, most of which is crisscrossed with hiking and biking trails. Youghiogheny is an Algonquin word meaning “a stream flowing in a contrary direction”, or in the case of the Yough, North toward Ohio Pyle and Pittsburgh. This section of the river is designated as a protected scenic corridor and you will feel the quiet isolation when sitting on the Crooked Butt Bench overlooking the big horseshoe bend in the river at the far back corner of our property. And if the river is low during your visit, feel free to wade across to the other side – Wild Yough owns the entire peninsula of land on the other side of the river and this is also bordered by State land.The river banks are steep on the property, but the fishing for small mouth bass is exceptional. There is a small turn around on the path just beyond Crooked Butt Bench where you can take out your canoe, kayak, or inner tubes after floating the 2+ miles from the Oakland bridge. Just be prepared to walk your water craft back up to the house or Glamping site as there is no motorized access to the river.If you like to lay on the rocks in the sun or take the kids for some wading in the river, the best place is the farthest to walk to. Take the trail to “High Bluff”, then cross the Snyder property line (Permission for trail access only – do not leave trail!), then descend down and cross the bridge across Herrington Manor Creek (a stocked trout stream!). All ready for your summer expedition! Completely sealed up and draft free. Still a very primitive site, but the interior now keeps in the warmth from the fireplace. A set of bunk beds and a 4 seat table as well as some cots makes it work for up to 6 people. Plenty of tent area around of you have a bigger group! Sunnyday's farm and forest was a Christmas tree farm in the 1950's. I've owned it for the last 40 years and it is now a horse farm with pastures and woods. Rustic area of 25 acres of pastures and forest bordering a hundred of acres of railroad and municipal forest. Great for hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking. 1.5 miles from Deer Lakes park which has fishing, hiking, mountain biking, frisbee course and a great playground. The Allegheny river, judged to be one of the cleanest in the country, is just 6 miles away. Harrison Hills park offers great hiking along the river and an occasional river otter. The Rachel Carson Trail and Baker trail are just a few miles away. It is a secluded log cabin in the woods on top of a hill overlooking a pasture. It is a very primitive cabin with a fireplace, brick floor, large porch, fabric interior and no chinking in the logs. We provide a bunk bed and cots and a picnic table. There is a large grassy area in front of the cabin for tents. There is no vehicle access, no electricity and no water at the cabin, but LOTS of downed wood for fires. There are horses, goats, chickens, ducks and a pig that roam the pastures. The cabin is about 300 yards from the parking area up a fairly steep hill, but the location is worth the walk! If you're stopping with an RV or trailer we have ample parking near the road and have overnight accommodations for horses Great place for a stopover.

Great little spot off the beaten path. Had a very cozy night with an early fire and the rain put my dog and I right to sleep. Getting greeted by the horses in the morning was a really nice touch. Host was incredibly friendly and informative. Would recommend!

Doug calls these two cabins “primitive” and they are in the sense of being rustic and basic but not in their construction and definitely not in terms of the customer service he and his family offer. The cabin I stayed in was clean, dry, warm, and offered me the protection I needed when an early Spring ride on the GAP from the C&O turned unexpectedly wet and cold. If you are in the need of a simple superb cabin to rest, stay, recharge, escape, or whatever the reason-I highly recommend these cabins right off of the GAP and very close to Cumberland. Doug and family have an amazing history with this land, take pride in their stewardship, and it shows!

My kids and I had so much fun!! Gerry was very nice and helpful!! We loved camping and horse riding!! My 6 year old got to ride a horse for the first time! Gerry explained all about the horses and my kids got to brush them and clean their hooves. Prada, Sky and Jackie are beautiful horses!! Pigonia the pig was adorable!! We’ll definitely be back and we’ll try out the hay loft next time! We highly recommend!!

Me and my partner chose to rent this cabin for thanksgiving. It was absolutely fabulous, the cabin is so cozy, the composting toilet did not bring any smell, the shower was great, the bed was very comfortable and the view from the bed was the best part of the trip. I cannot wait to rent this again. Virgil and his wife were also very welcoming. I highly recommend renting this property.

Virgil & Pam really go above and beyond at The Fern House! The cabin was comfy and stocked with everything one could need for an extended weekend away. Our hosts were generous and gracious. They provide great communication and hospitality. We spent 3 nights and wish it could've been longer! Our pups loved the mile walk around the property each morning plus great hiking spots nearby. We took advantage of the fireplace, local eatery suggestions, and the loft was the perfect hideaway for resting and waking to beautiful wooded views. We cant wait to come back!

Absolutely loved the creek access, my dog in particular was a huge fan! The bed was ridiculously nice to settle in to after a long day on the trails. The site is a good size with plenty of nice additionals- have the propane grill available for low commitment coffee in the morning was a nice touch. It was exactly what I needed.

This was a very cool rustic A-frame loft, on a cute farm populated with several dogs and even more pigs. We had a great time around the campfire. Groceries and some good diners are a short drive.

We loved our stay and Donnie was a good host. The toilet probably wasn't big enough to host 6 adults, but if you're with a lot of men you shouldn't have a problem. Exactly what we were looking for!

Weekend Trip to Ferns in the Forest

We absolutely loved staying in the Fernhouse!! It was perfect. It was adorable and so cozy. It was very clean and had everything we needed. The location was wonderful! So close to hiking trails and lots of outdoor recreation. The hike around the property was beautiful and our dogs loved walking it with us in the morning. The outdoor area is super cozy too. Virgil was so kind and welcoming. We will be back again in another season!! I would highly recommend.

Weekend Trip to Nanny’s Rustic Retreat

This has been one of my favorite hip camp experiences! Donnie is a wonderful host and has a lovely property with a bunch to do. Loved falling asleep in a cozy den and waking up to the animals. All areas were clean and comfortable- 11/10!

2 nights at Creekside Haven at the Farm

This was a perfect peaceful getaway! We only stayed for two nights but will definitely be back! Donald provides so much making it as stress free as possible! We really enjoyed the sound of the creek at all times and the hot showers! The yurt is beautiful and comfortable and the bathhouse was insanely clean and convenient! 10/10 would recommend to anyone wanting some time in the woods! Donald was very responsive, I was able to message him when needed through the app!

1 night at Sunnyday's Forest

Highly recommend the horse back riding! What a unique offering with your cabin stay. I will be straight, the cabin is for true woodsmen - it's raw, it's that's your cup of joe, I highly recommend this stay, I had a blast!!
