Below the Falls Lodge

1 site · Lodging1 acre · Coos Bay, OR
Relax and revive in this artistic 'cabin' with wonderful views of historic Glenn Creek from every room. An architectural dream, you enter this lodge style home through a pivoting hobbit style front door with hardware from the 1800's. Highlights of this original home include a gourmet kitchen with labradorite granite counters, 800 year old juniper tree spiral stair case, huge beams and exposed rafters, a sauna, and a romantic wood stove. Also each upstairs bedroom has a hanging bed with three 8 foot skylights above for indoor star gazing. Original artworks from local artists are throughout the home. Many pleasantries await the curious such as embedded fossils in the cracked mud walls.Nestled amongst towering fir and cedar trees, with windows everywhere, you'll feel and see nature's presence. This home site has a remarkably peaceful way about it. Recently featured in Southern Oregon Magazine and KCBY 11 TV's ~In Focus~ 'Goin' Green' and Oregon's Solar Home Tour, this is a unique 'green' home. This home was built with environmentally friendly materials. Building with little impact on the surroundings was very important to us during construction. The myrtle hardwood floor in the kitchen and living room was milled on site which came from trees that stood where the house is now. Same story for the beautiful maple flooring in the ½ bath. All of the large beams and fir flooring came from two 4' thick 104 year old douglas fir trees which also stood and were milled where the house is now. The fir trees sprouted after the last forest fire that came through the canyon. One of our neighbors fell a sixty five year old redwood that was over six feet thick! We used some of it as a wonderful wainscot paneling throughout the house. All of the finishes used are no or low VOC. Surrounding the house is native vegetation, huge trees and a few herbs and spices for cooking. You'll enjoy the fully equipped kitchen with labradorite granite counters. The kitchen island has a new five burner gas stove with a convection oven and warming oven. The island has plenty of granite and wood counter space. Hanging from the exhaust hood are stainless, non-stick, and cast iron cookware. We also provide shade grown fair trade coffee and a grinder, espresso machine, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, utensils, chef knives, glasses and frosty cocktail glasses in the freezer. The dining room table has a river view and can seat six comfortably. There is also seating for three at the island bar. From the kitchen you can visit with the folks in the living room thanks to the open floor plan. Beside the wood stove are two chairs and the futon couch with reading lamp. A CD changer, TV with a DVD player and VHS machine are in the downstairs bedroom. Bring your favorite videos or browse our selection of movies. The property has 150 feet of creek frontage with great views of Glenn creek, the forest and distant cliffs. Enjoy wildlife viewing with River Dippers, Chipmunks, Kingfishers, Great Blue Herons, Screech Owls, Pileated Wood Peckers, Elk, an occasional Bald Eagle or River Otter and other wildlife from the house and back deck. Build a fire and have lunch on the nearby picnic table and benches.

Lost Coast Adventure Camp

1 site · RV, Tent5 acres · Florence, OR
This magical property is conveniently located 5 miles north of Florence and directly on Hwy 101, approximately 3/4 of a mile from the ocean. This is a large private site that is surrounded by old growth timber and teaming with flora and fauna. Campers are encouraged to explore, but be aware, this property is wild.. and encounters with wildlife are common. Beyond the adventuring that can be done on the property, Baker Beach state park is less than a half a mile away and there is a plethora of trails, parks, and lakes within 10 miles. We do have full time neighbors just to the North, so we ask that you be respectful and cautious with regard to dogs/noise. Hwy 101 can be very dangerous for unsuspecting pets. There are several roadside campfire stations(directly across 101 from camp) offering small bundles for $5-6/night. **Be advised that we are slowly working on the property to eventually create more camping space. There was a lot of dirt/fill brought in over the winter of 2022 and the property may not be as green as years past.** Please be our guests, relax, and enjoy!

Anchor's A-Way walk to beach.

1 site · Lodging1 acre · Florence, OR
This house is for the young, or young at heart as it has a ladder-stairway to the loft, where you'll find the queen bed. It's super close to the beach, but in a marvelous wind protected location so you can enjoy the deck in the morning, afternoon and evening. It has as much outdoor living space as there is inside. There is a picnic table for outside dining as well. You'll find 2 rattan swivel rockers, and a 40 inch TV on a rolling cart. It has streaming internet TV with Sling. The built in twin beds are perfect for children, or taking a quick nap in the afternoon, while curled up with a book. I have a thing for A-frames, they've been disappearing, right and left in Florence and on the West Coast in general, as people rip them down and toss up more practical housing. I blogged about this A-frame and Helmsman's Hide-A-Way in January & March of 2013, little did I know I'd wind up with both of them in June 2013 as vacation rentals. While these 2 represent opposite ends of the spectrum, they're both fantastic pieces of history, if you enjoy rustic, funky, and fun historic houses you'll love them, as much as I do. If you're really into A-frames and oddities, ask me and I'll provide you with a self guided tour list, to see in the neighborhood. Since we took on this house the owners have passed on this house to their daughter. I loved hearing the family stories, telling me about swinging out of the loft (before we put in the new loft rail - it's amazing any of us survived ;-) Since we took it on 7 years ago, we have replaced all the windows, siding and re-built the deck rail benches, plus replace the refrigerator and range. In the winter of 2023 we plan to replace the flooring on the main floor. Enjoy Burgers & Brew "where the locals hang out" at Jerry's Place within walking distance or Anchors A-Way is a short drive from the Historic Old Town Florence gift shops, the Antique District, art galleries, wine bars, coffee bistros, and fabulous seafood restaurants. Explore some of the best fishing on one of 17 local lakes, or play on some of the finest sand dunes, and state parks that Oregon has to offer. Amenities: 40 inch Flat Panel Roku Streaming TV ( no traditional networks) AMC, CNN, HGTV, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, History, TNT, TBS, FOOD, A&E, Lifetime, Travel, NFL Network, FS1, FS2, SyFy, NBCSN, USA, NatGeo & More Outside Chairs & Picnic table Towels, linens, blankets and pillows A fully outfitted kitchen - Electric Apartment size Range, refrigerator, microwave, and all the pots pans dishes and flatware you'll need. Camping near North Bend with horseback riding guide

Overview

On the outskirts of Coos Bay, North Bend is the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area and while taking an ATV or dune buggy out on the 500-foot heaps of sand is one of the top attractions here, there’s plenty more to see and do. Popular activities range from crossing Coo's Bay on the gorgeous McCullough Bridge to exploring Sunset Bay and Shore Acres State Park. The Mill Casino & Hotel, run by the local Coquille Indian Tribe, is also in town and there are numerous wooded campgrounds within a short drive, both on the beach and slightly inland.

Where to go

Oregon’s South Coast

North Bend offers easy access to other spots on the picturesque South Coast, arguably the prettiest part of an already gorgeous coastline. Popular spots include the Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor, with its numerous Pacific-facing viewpoints, and Cape Blanco State Park, the westernmost point in the state.

Central Coast Dunes

While North Bend offers easy access to some of the best dunes in the land, there are even more to be found up north on the Oregon Central Coast. Florence and Reedsport both have massive dunes. Those in Florence can be easily accessed from the massive Jessie M. Honeyman Memorial State Park.

Umpqua National Forest

East of North Bend, the Umpqua National Forest offers beautiful old-growth stands, rivers, waterfalls, hiking trails, and plenty of campgrounds. It’s also home to numerous crystalline lakes and is directly connected to Crater lake, Oregon’s only national park.

When to go

Summer is by far the most popular time to visit North Bend, owing to generally warmer, dryer weather. However, this season can also get crowded, particularly during July and August, so be prepared to book in advance. Summer is also ideal if you want to take an ATV or UTV out on the dunes; daily rain is common from October through May and wet dunes can be difficult to drive on.
