Naturalist Isabelle H. Klein wrote a collection of letters from her home of Sawdust (named form the sawdust left by the loggers of the early 60’s) for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Explorer Magazine from the winter of 1969 to the summer of 1976. They then were published as the book “Letters From Sawdust” by the Press of Case Western Reserve University for the Museum. It is a lyrical voyage through the seasons at the Sawdust Tract in Northeast Ohio. She details encounters with the wildlife of the area as well as the changing seasons and plant life. Reminiscent of Thoreau's writings about Walden. In 1978 an additional house was moved onto the property from Sidley's gravel pit and joined with the existing Klein farmhouse. We decided to preserve almost 400 acres of the property with the help of the Western Reserve Land Conservatory for the Cleveland Museum Of Natural History, Natural Areas. Forest is home to the red-sided dace, and 10 rare species of birds, including cerulean warblers. The original small family farm and surrounding woods we have retained are being restored and updated. We are proud to call Sawdust home and would love to share it with you.

Nearly 2,500 acres of marshes and woodlands create a beautiful ambiance for your next getaway in Mother Nature. Stroll along one of two trails in the park, where robins and warblers tucked behind purple cresses and beech-maple trees may just move you to tears, or at least to write a haiku. Floating devices of just about every variety are invited to channel the 7,850 lake, and areas like a dog park means Fido is more than welcome on the scene. We doubt the mosquitos will be much of a problem, but if worse comes to worse, you can just light some of those good-smelling candles or load up on the catnip (look it up!) to fend off potential itchy bites.

In 1955 when my family bought our 180-acre farm, there were Shagbark Hickory trees lining both shores of a rock-filled stream. Years later a 550-acre lake was created from damming our stream and Hickory shores became the wildlife- filled headwaters. Bald Eagles, fox, river otters, ospreys, beaver, and deer are frequent visitors to our farm along with other water birds and wildlife. Recreational opportunities are plentiful including fishing, paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking. The 50 mile Western Reserve Greenway paved bike trail is 1 1/2 miles away on country roads and other adjoining roads create unlimited quiet country rides and walks. In 2023 we have added a 3/4 mile wooded trail along the shores of Rock Creek with lookouts and 27 numbered stops. These stops are described in our Hickory Shores interpretive guide available at the trailhead. Additional hiking trails continue upstream and connect two seasonal waterfalls on the property. Benches along the way provide quiet spots to rest or picnic. Spectacular sunsets, a quiet country paved road and Amish buggies await your visit. We are in Ashtabula County, home to 32 wineries and 19 covered bridges including the shortest and longest in the U.S. The second weekend in October brings the Covered Bridge Festival in nearby Jefferson, Ohio. We are conveniently located south of Lake Erie and 16 miles east of Pymatuning Reservoir for additional recreational opportunities. We love staying at the Camp Cabin. Our girls loved the farm animals and the property in general. Plenty of firewood and bathroom is super easy to get to and use. Will be coming back.

We had a great time at Nick’s campground! We had a nice space and no issues at all. The path to the campsites is a little rocky so if you have an older beat up car like us and are driving in the dark, be sure to be careful! There is a close active train track but we didn’t mind it much. Complimentary wine bottles in the outhouse from their local winery as a nice added touch! Would definitely go back!

Weekend Trip to Goat Farm Hide-Away CVNP

We had a great time! We have trouble finding spots for winter camping and this space was great. We actually forgot our tent poles so the trip could have needed a lot of adapting- but with the access to the barn, we were able to set up inside. Facilities & amenities were clean & as described. Loved watching the animals in the morning and setting up my hammock back by the chickens. Allison was a fantastic host. Would absolutely stay here again!

Weekend Trip to Goat Farm Hide-Away CVNP

Great spot located right by CVNP. We enjoyed the campfire and laughed every time a goat would remind us we weren’t alone by sneezing. Even though the sun set early and the cool fall air filled the night we had fun. The barn was a nice surprise and good location for a small party. Woke up in the middle of the night to pee (very clean port-a-potty) and the stars were so clear and bright!

We had a great time at Shady Maple cabin! It was a beautiful place to unwind, de-stress, and be in an amazing setting! The cabin had everything you would need for a relaxing time. We love a good log cabin and this did not disappoint! It was clean, had snacks, jacuzzi tub inside, a hot tub outside, board games, was private enough and everything worked as it should. Shout out to the hosts for sharing this beautiful property with us! Will definitely go back!

Bill and Nancy were very quick to respond, accommodating and helpful! He even even offered to loan me a sleeping bag when the weather was colder than I'd planned for! I ended up caught in traffic and was not able to stay there, but I have their place on my list for cross-country drives!

A terrific stay. Feel like you are in the country, but close enough to civilization in case anything happens. The cabin is perfect. Host communicates quickly. The barn was a big hit with my two young girls. Cozy and quiet. Would definitely stay here again.
