IMPORTANT: 4WD or AWD is required to access our property. There is a sometimes steep and windy gravel road into Pause. Please make sure your vehicle has 4WD or AWD before you book.
Campsites: They are 3/4-1/4 mile from the entrance. Some are accessible by 4WD. There may be some vigorous hiking involved, but the views are worth it. The pads are various sizes. Let us know what the needs of your party are and we can help you choose from the available spots. We also have several more remote “off-menu” sites for those seeking a backpacking adventure - ask for more information if your are interested.
Hiking: There are several miles of trails on the property. They range from an easy slope to very strenuous. The entire property is fenced so you won't easily get lost. Your climbing efforts will be amply rewarded by stunning views, especially at sunset. Trail maps are available upon request.
On-Site Amenities: we provide a clean porta-potty and running water that is spring fed. We ask that you follow "Leave-No-Trace" procedures during your stay.
Off-Site Amenities: If you choose to explore the area : we are a 10 minute drive from I-40 Exit 24. Asheville is 45 minutes away; Waynesville is 25 minutes away. Presnell's Grocery (highly recommended, family-owned store that sells locally farmed products) is 10 minutes away from the property entrance. The Ingles supermarket in Canton is a 15 minute drive. You will find every kind of fast food in that area. There are also several excellent local dining options in Canton, Clyde, and Waynesville which we are happy to recommend to you by request.

Our 95-acre farm was once owned by the Davis family who predominantly raised dairy cattle. We now raise the wooly Mangalitsa pig and sell to the best chefs and restaurants. We sell our pork at the farm too!
All of our campsites are next to running water except the two hilltop sites.
Two porta-potties are on the farm and private porta-potties are available for rent. Groups of eight or more are required to rent a porta potty should you not bring your own toilet system with you. We do not allow the use of our small wooded areas as toilets. No porta potties are provided b/tw Dec 15 and March 15

WINTER BOOKINGS: Our driveway may be impassible during winter weather and we recommend snow tires, snow chains, and/or 4x4 during the winter months due to ice. We do shut down the running water during the winter to prevent the pipes from freezing. We will provide guests with 5 gallon drinking jugs with a dispenser to use, and the toilet still has water to flush. But the shower, sink, tub, hose, and bidet will be shut down during these months. If you want the true off-grid experience this is it ;)
We do require guests to e-sign our rental agreement that we will email to you, and request a $300 security deposit hold (not a charge) that we will release upon checkout. This is just a precaution for us letting people we don't know stay at our place and respecting it.

We offer guests an off-grid and authentic Appalachian experience at our hike-in cabins and campsites located on 500 private acres atop the Newfound Mountains in Western North Carolina!
Our Trailhead is located 45 minutes west of Asheville, NC and our hike-in trail is 2 miles long with 1,250 feet of elevation gain. The hike-in trail utilizes an old forest service road which follows a creek providing verdant landscapes and soothing sounds as you make your way up the mountain to our cabins and campsites.
We have two antique Appalachian cabins on-site and two campsites available. Our cabins and campsites are priced per person and can be reserved individually or collectively through an entire property buyout. A hearty and healthy breakfast is served each morning in our Main Lodge and is included and you'll never pay a cleaning fee on this mountain because we believe in Southern hospitality!
Our Main Lodge (Cabin #1) has a huge front porch with spectacular views, a nicely appointed off-grid kitchen, full bathroom with hot shower and an upstairs loft that sleeps up to 10. Our on-site host/s stay downstairs in the Main Lodge in private bedrooms so they can keep the home fires burning, tend the garden, cook breakfasts, clean the cabins and ensure all your needs are taken care of during your stay.
Guests in our Upper Cabin (Cabin #2) enjoy a wooded and secluded setting in a rustic cabin that sleeps up to 6. The downstairs area features an open floorpan with a queen size bed, off-grid kitchen, dining area and the loft upstairs sleeps up to 4 people. Our cabin adjacent camp space features two spectacular campsites and is located 100’ from our Main Lodge. We're about 10-15 minutes' drive away from downtown Asheville and a $12-$15 Uber ride. Unfortunately, public transportation is not very accessible from the campground.
*FAQ: Is this a good spot to bring my kiddos?
Our campground is not equipped to handle the magical, whirlwind force that children release unto the world. There's a lot of breakable stuff, tempting treehouses (that might be occupied by other guests!), sites that are within earshot of each other, and hazards that aren't a good fit for kids.
WHAT'S NEARBY?
- There are approximately a bajillion breweries in Asheville, many of which are within 5-15 minutes away.
- Downtown Asheville (~10-15 minutes), West Asheville (~5-10 minutes) and the River Arts District (~5 minutes)
-Hiking! Waterfalls, mountain-top views, fog-drenched valleys, rambling rivers... There are some trails about 20 minutes away, but to get to the good stuff, you'll drive 40-90+ minutes.

When you go to sleep, there's no light except the moon and stars, no refrigerator or central heating or air conditioning noise -- only the sounds of nature -- the stream, crickets or frogs in the nearby pond, dogs or coyotes in the distance. Without the glow of a nearby city, the hot tub on a clear night, the skies are dazzling.
Speaking of which, the wood-fired hot tub is made by a company called Snorkel. It's perfect for 2 and can fit 3, although tight. It's Japanese style hot tub bathing, meaning no chemicals. Also, since we're not grid tied, it relies on a firebox heating fresh spring water, which you fill it with. It takes approx. 35 minutes to fill the tub and between 3 and 3.5 hours to heat (longer when it's really cold!). There's a thermometer in it, so as it gets closer to your liking (don't let it get over 102 degrees), let the existing logs burn down, choke off the air vent sleeve and hop in. With no pump sounds and the stars above, it's incomparable. The $50 fee (per 2 night rentals) covers thorough cleaning between guests and split firewood.
You will be very comfortable in Little Good Egg, even in extreme weather, simply by paying attention and taking more time for simple tasks. It sounds corny, but there is a meditative quality to thinking and doing things like heating water, keeping warm, staying hydrated, eating well and choosing to do what you really want. I'm always amazed how busy I am -- and how different this kind of busy feels -- without electronics and my technological "time savers." Odd as it sounds to say this, it's stunning and wonderful to go "offline," even for just a day, and not get hit by little chirps and incoming messages that seem to arrive now 24/7.
Note: Since we opened in October, 2014, guest reviews consistently tell us us best thing about staying at Good Egg is being off the grid and the treadmill of modern life, unplugging from the dominant culture and experiencing oneself as humans did 100 years ago and more.
Whether it’s the absence of electricity (in the cabin), the quiet of the country, no city glow in the night sky, or the once common experience of the natural world dominating over human-made or human-crafted things, it’s astonishing for many of us to see and feel and experience without constant communications via text and email and the distractions of modern life. Our little homestead is run by a mother daughter team. We raise sheep, chickens and grow a large garden and several fruit and nut orchards. Raven ridge is a 5.0 acre property with plenty of botanical appeal, Appalachian charm and mountain views. James landed on the property in 2009, built a small dairy barn and milked 3 cows for a couple years before building the two cabins. In 2015 he was joined by Sofi, originally from Sweden and together they have three daughters.
Together they manage a botanically interesting hill farm and are happy to host travelers and seekers in their cabins. Hilltop was a joint project that James built in 2012 with a talented woodworker and friend in 6 months. We have maintained the original vibe of the place, rustic simplicity and elegance a notch or two above glamping, well-described by the zen koan, "chop wood, carry water"
Orchard House was built entirely by James from the cement blocks to the roof. It’s very creative and cozy, besides spacious for a tiny home. People describe it as “dreamy”, also “perfect”.
Some of the Hilltop photos are a bit dated, we have a more private outhouse behind the cabin, and have made a few improvements here and there. Reach out anytime for any reason. We love hosting and nearly everyone enjoys their stay.

The view from right outside the camper is amazing! The horses and donkey came by for a visit when we were sitting outside resting after a day of exploring the area. The camper has super comfortable beds, very cold ac, and hot water. The location is perfect.

We rented the camper for Mother’s Day weekend just myself and my 11-year-old daughter and we truly could not have had a better time. The farm is tucked away in the beautiful mountains peaceful and secluded yet still close to Asheville (25 min) and Canton (10 min). We arrived and were immediately greeted by friendly goats and the host and instantly felt welcomed and at ease. The camper was cozy and thoughtfully stocked with everything we needed. We opened the windows to the mountain breeze and settled in. Beds were very comfortable with soft blankets and extra pillows that made it feel like home. We loved the little touches…coffee pot French press toaster Bluetooth speakers firewood and string lights that made evenings feel magical. Nights by the fire were peaceful and sunsets breathtaking. The fireflies were pure magic my daughter said the trees looked like Christmas lights. She fell in love with the animals goats horses donkey and the sweetest puppy right outside our door. She knew every goat’s name by the end. We also enjoyed exploring nearby Canton with Asheville close by. Dani was a wonderful host so kind welcoming and easygoing giving us the perfect balance of hospitality and space. This was one of the most special mother daughter trips we’ve ever had and we’re already hoping to come back. Pretty sure my husband and son are already planning their own trip here next month!

This is a special place! Doug was a wonderful host. Everything looks just like the photos. The views are amazing and the cabin perfectly quaint. Loved the community vibe with there being other visitors hanging out in the main space. The hike in is steep!

Weekend Trip to Mountain Top Cabins on Private Land
This was probably our favorite trip we've ever done. Our host Doug was amazing and incredibly personable and hospitable. The views were out of this world and only a short hike up from the cabin. The cabin was very cozy and warm from the wood stove the entire night. We will definitely be back!

Was the perfect place to slow down for a few days, disconnect, and refill my soul. Hosts were super friendly and accommodating. Sweet little spot and the surrounding community was enjoyable to explore. Will definitely go back.

Group trip
Our group of 5 women had an amazing experience! We went opening weekend and stayed for 1 night.
Highlights were the hike in, a cozy evening bonfire, the most beautiful sunset view from big bald and a delicious morning breakfast!
We stayed in cabin 2. It had one double bed downstairs and 4 single beds in the loft. Fresh, cool spring water in the kitchen and in the adjoining bathroom plus hot water in the shower.
Do not miss the short hike up to big bald for sunset. The views are unreal! Lisa, Doug and Booth were welcoming and fabulous hosts. We really enjoyed connecting over the home cooked breakfast which included scrambled eggs with mountain grown ramps.
We can’t wait to visit again!!!

The cabin right on the river was comfortable and quaint, loved falling asleep and waking to the sound of the water and birds singing! The restrooms and showers were clean and lots of hot water. The property is amazing plenty of privacy between cabins. Everyone is super friendly and helpful. The trails were also good to hike in the mornings. Extra plus: the two horses on the adjoining property were so beautiful and friendly, we fed them bits of grass every day. Overall would definitely recommend if you are OK with roughing it just a little bit.

Weekend Trip to Red Rooster Farm: AVL Adjacent!
Nicely appointed camper (everything you need, nothing you don't) on a small farm with phenomenal views from the patio table out front. Festive lighting, great bed, plentiful linens, cute goats and ornery donkey 🤣. Friendly hosts approved our stay on short notice which we appreciated. Highly recommend!

Weekend Trip to Red Rooster Farm: AVL Adjacent!
We were super pleased with Danielle's setup. The view was so pretty from the camper and camper was decorated thoughtfully and had all that was needed for our stay. We really enjoyed the fire pit to make s'mores and of course all the animals. Loved meeting the goats, horses, and donkey. I got to feed the goats some snacks. Hope to stay again and would recommend to anyone!

3 nights at Peace Of Pisgah
I enjoyed glamping at site #2 on Vicki’s property. There was a sturdy tent w/cot, air mattress, sleeping bags, chair, picnic table, a fire pit w/a couple chairs, potty bucket with sanitizing spray, soil to cover & hand sanitizer and all of this was backed up to a lovely creek. Location only a few minutes from Pisgah. Felt very safe as a woman camping alone and private. Vicki was warm & welcoming! Down falls were few but could be dealbreakers for some including traffic noise at all hours (earplugs were included although), tear in screen of tent (not an issue for me since few bugs & cool in evening), no trash service and no running water for drinking, cooking or washing hands but there was a hot shower (but I did not use). I was also very cold my first night using summer bags provided, so suggest bringing cooler weather bags for camping outside of the summer months. Finally there was a burn ban which prevented me from going on the trail I planned to hike and having a campfire, both disappointing but not in Vicki’s control.

Spacious studio was very comfortable with 2 large beds and deluxe with indoor bathroom (outdoor shower) and hot water in kitchen area. Fun and funky with horses, chickens and cute dog. Nice views too. Andrea is a lovely woman!! Thanks for sharing your space!

Weekend Trip to Upcycled Art Studio
Andrea was very pleasant during all of our interactions! She has such a cool homestead and it’ll feel like you’re in another world coming from the city. That being said, you’re only 10min outside of Asheville and a bunch of cool hiking and outdoor activities. We will surely be back.
