Full disclosure, there isn't a television or wifi, so just take a technology break and get back to nature or bring a good book. Your own data plan on your mobile device will likely get reception, but we can't guarantee it. If time and weather permits, we would even be happy to give you a pontoon ride.
Want to explore the area? Just a few miles away is the 49-mile multi-use Heartland Trail, where you can enjoy a quiet walk, run, or bike ride through a paved, wooded, level trail. Within ten miles are plentiful restaurants and stores in Park Rapids, Dorset, and Nevis. There are often music festivals throughout the summer, and several of the restaurants and bars host live music, some of which are played by Debbie, one of your two hosts! You can even take a 30-mile drive to Itasca State Park, home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River, where you can walk right across the headwaters!

Goldie is open for the summer!
Goldie is an original early 1900's wooden caboose that ran on the DMIR railroad. She was re-designed in 1912 to be safer on the tracks (and her length extended so she wouldn't fall over). She ran the tracks of the Iron Range until retirement in 1968. She's been fully renovated with a few modern conveniences.
We've re-used as much of the original wood as possible, and repurposed many things into other things so that we could keep the history alive. My husband is the carpenter that brought her to life and I'm the one that gave her some paint and design.
Now, she's ready for people again, and to keep telling her story to others. Please...be our guest...and let Goldie be your host. The caboose sits about 50 yards from the house, but it tucked into the trees and feels very private. There is a private trail that leads from the caboose to the lake.
Goldie has a max occupancy of 2 people due to space constraints. Please no pets since there are wooden floors. If you have a service dog, of course it is welcome - please reach out to me about that detail.

We do have pets and they do run around the yard freely. There are two dogs that love to romp and say hi (a female Golden Retriever and a female Griffon mix) and a female cat that does the same. They are super friendly, but they will come to visit you at the lake.
Our lake is an "environmental lake" so while we keep a small beach area that you are welcome to use, it is not free of lily pads or weeds. It's simple, but fully swimm-able (the Golden Retriever keeps the first 8 feet of water weed free with her swimming!). You are welcome to use the dock and chairs we keep there for breezy evenings or to take a dip to cool off.
We are only 2i-sh miles from town with gas, food, ice cream, coffee shop, resaturants, small town shopping and a donut shop. There is a paved rail trail just down our street that runs both directions for many miles. Bikes are welcome! (please leave ATVs at home).

We had such a good time staying at Goldie on Shallow Lake! The caboose is a gem and staying here allowed us to enjoy quiet evenings around the fire and the opportunity to kayak on the lake and explore the many towns and parks around Nevis. Amy and her husband were the most courteous and accommodating hosts. If you’re looking for an outdoorsy feel in a glamping fashion with some historic charm, look no further than Goldie the Caboose!

A beautiful and secluded place to stay! We watched and listened to the loons from the dock as often as possible, launched the kayaks from the dock a very short walk from the cabin. I definitely recommend having your morning coffee (or tea) on the edge of the dock while listening to all of the nature, absolute best way to start a morning in my opinion. The bugs weren't bad at all either until we got to the other side of the lake

Our stay at Paul's Lakeside Cottage exceeded every expectation! Paul is an incredible host and made us feel right at home. One of the highlights was a sunset cruise on the lake that we'll never forget.
The cottage was the perfect home base for exploring Itasca State Park and Bemidji, while still offering a peaceful place to relax. We saw so much wildlife—including a bear sitting on the beaver dam across the lake!
Our dog, Piper, absolutely loved her stay and had so much fun playing with Paul's sweet dog, Piper. She definitely wasn't ready to leave!
If you're looking for a quiet, relaxing getaway with an amazing host, this is it. We couldn't have asked for a better experience and can't wait to come back!

David is an extremely welcoming host! The property is very well maintained and clean with lots of extra items (bug spray, fire starting ingredients, camp chairs, balls and other sports items, coffee maker and all of the wonderful stuff in the barn!)
We had a wonderful time glamping and chasing trolls and plan to come back again! This is a wonderful base camp location for the troll hunt!

Weekend Trip to Safe And Sound In Nevis, MN
What an absolute peace of paradise we were lucky enough to experience for our 4th of July weekend. This cozy little cabin had everything we needed, and then some. If I could live in something similar full time, I totally would. Our hosts were friendly and down to earth. Debbie gave us excellent recommendations for restaurants, sites to see, and even where to catch a firework show,(which avoided the busy downtown.) I would most definitely stay here again!

The views were so beautiful the river or creek was so pretty to look at the house takes you straight to the place it was amazing at the farm there was amazing the deer was like right up next to you it was so cool to see the cabin is so cute and rustic and it was actually really nice the beds were super comfortable and she had everything you needed and the games were really fun to play with as well! 10/10

Debbie and Steve were awesome! So friendly, met us at the cabin and showed us around. Whatever you need, they’ll accommodate. The cabin was clean and comfortable, and the massage chairs were amazing after a long day in the sun!
There is so much wildlife to watch and listen to. The water was a bit weedy at the dick but we were able to use floaties to move out to open water and it was so beautiful. Even caught a fish off the dock!

I felt like I was at a private nature retreat. Watching and listening to the lake activity was magical. Loons, trumpet swans, beavers…..and the birds! Have your Merlin App ready to go and don’t forget your binoculars. The property is amazing, the host is amazing. Super cute spot! Really enjoyed it. Loved the spaciousness around the cabin and the fact that it had a picnic table right outside of it. Lots of trails to walk my dog around, which was perfect. The only thing I'd say is--make sure you pay attention to your drive to the spot. There are no wayfinding signs out in the trails!
