Echo Valley Forest Reserve is a backcountry site located deep within the forest near the center of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore, ten minutes from Empire Beach, Glen Haven, and Glen Arbor. The camp site is completely private, with only party rented to at a time. It is in the center of a 40-acre parcel, surrounded by thousands of acres of National Lakeshore and private forested land.
Access is off of a rough seasonal two-track but most 2-wheel drive cars are fine. Watch out for rocks. There are solar lights, a pit toilet, a fire ring, and a ~8x8' deck. There is room for 4 cars, and as many tents as you can set up.
We have 4 rules:
1) Leave no trace. Do not leave garbage at camp. DO NOT BURN garbage, people cook in that pit.
2) NO cutting into the live trees. You will get a 0-star review, 100% of the time.
3) Keep cars on the gravel driveway.
4) Put out all fires completely (COLD) and respect any Burn Bans that may be active at the time of your stay. These are issued by the fire department, not me.

Mr. Joe’s Campsite is an absolute hidden gem. From the moment I arrived, I felt this instant sense of calm—like the whole place just lets you breathe a little easier. It’s wonderfully quiet, peaceful, and perfectly tucked away from all the usual chaos, making it the ideal spot to unwind.
The grounds are clean, spacious, and thoughtfully maintained, and you can tell there’s real care put into keeping everything comfortable for guests. Whether you’re sitting by the fire, sipping your morning coffee, or just listening to the sounds of nature, the atmosphere is genuinely relaxing.
Mr. Joe himself is warm, welcoming, and clearly takes pride in his campsite. It makes the whole experience feel personal in the best way.

We set up camp in the back location and it was a nice stay. Great spot for pets as they have plenty of room to run around. Nice trails throughout the woods to check out. The night sky was the best! We could see every star imaginable! Would recommend!

Holly is an amazing post she's very friendly and kind. She has a beautiful piece of property located in quaint little piece of the woods. There's plenty of room for parking of a car and a RV. She is very accommodating. Also has a beautiful fire pit for nights outside. I was struggling with my propane in my RV and Holly was kind enough to let us use her grill.

Nice quite and secluded rustic camping. Plenty of room in between each camp site(50 to 100 feet) with tree's and bushes in between. Porta potty was very clean with plenty of supplies. There is even a disc golf course on site. There is also a convenience store and Dollar General 3minutes away.

My husband and I rented a site here for our anniversary and we had a great time! The owner was very welcoming and super chill!
The showers and restrooms are very clean and smelt good.
We will bring our kids here too since there’s an open area with things for kids to do and places for parents to hang out!
We came up to ride the trails and there are plenty of spots to start that fun!

The main road in (12 Mile Road) was way more rugged than I had expected. That being said, the site was very remote and extremely peaceful. You can probably make it in (as others suggested, come in from the west off Hemlock) with 2WD, but I was glad I had 4WD for peace of mind.
Also, the site it beautiful! The electric hookup was super convenient. The shower appeared to be hooked directly to the well water line. However, there was a heater there ready to be installed. We used my solar shower which was decently warm.
There are plenty of trails on site and my dog had a blast being off leash the entire week. We did venture into Hungerford for a much longer hike. There was a super nice couple there our first night, but we had the place to ourselves the rest of the week. What a gem of a site. Would love to have a group camp there in the future.

I loved staying Steph and Mark’s Tiny Cabin! It was clean, well appointed (as far as was expected for a place with no electricity) and above all, private. Had a long weekend and some new gear to try out, so we decided to look to the north for a campsite. Everything was booked, not to mention packed full of people. Then my brother told me about Hipcamp, and everything changed.. We found Clinton's Ranch site and it checked all the boxes: close to where my parents were staying, dog friendly, and isolated (one campsite only). Clinton was super cool and easy to deal with. He pretty much told us we could do whatever we wanted there and walked me back to check out the site, a nice mowed area tucked back in the woods. We spent 2 nights in perfect weather, not far from modern conveniences, which is good because there are no toilets on site (not even an issue at the price per night). Just bring a bucket toilet or something similar and pack in all of your water and you are set. It was paradise for 2 days. I would DEFinitely recommend this site and I will definitely be back someday.
