Jennifer’s cabin is a perfect getaway. It has every amenity you could want! We got some surprise snow during our stay so the fireplace was perfect for our stay along with some games and movies. I can’t wait to come back in the spring and fall to get some use out of the hot tub, grill, and fire pit.

Had a great time tent camping! We ordered a bundle of firewood for the night and Bill brought it to our firepit. And even helped light it since everything was wet. The hot shower and bathroom was great! We did have trouble finding the location, the app takes you to the wrong place. What a lovely property! If it wasn’t so cold when we were there this past week before Christmas, we would have ventured further. We did enjoy watching the ducks and chickens though! Hot shower and restrooms were a luxury I didn’t expect. Definitely book with Place of Refuge!

We were biking across southern Illinois with plans to stay near where Rock Hole Meadow is located. We had some mechanical issues and weren't able to make it to the site, but the communication before (like immediately before, we're not good at planning!) the trip and during was great. Disappointed we couldn't make it to the site this time, but based on the excellent (really, A+++) communication, would definitely recommend checking this out if you are in the area!

2 nights at Sonny Hills

We had an incredible stay at Sonny Hills-Cabin near Shawnee Forest! The cabin itself was very cozy, very comfortable, and very well equipped with everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. The location couldn’t have been better, surrounded by gorgeous nature with hiking and sightseeing opportunities on site and even more in the park just a short drive away. The hosts went above and beyond to make sure we felt welcome and had everything we needed. Their kindness and attention to detail truly made this trip extra special. Our only regret is that we couldn’t stay longer and we’re already looking forward to returning as soon as we can. Highly recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat near Shawnee Forest! 🌲✨

Weekend Trip to Sonny Hills

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our weekend getaway at Jennifer's cabin. The lovely water with a tree-covered hill to the east was beautiful each day. It was great to have wood provided for the fire pit, the kitchen had everything we needed, the beds were comfortable, and so were the couches. It was a great place to get away from our busy lives for a weekend. We visited Garden of the Gods and Dixon Spring this time but we hope to come back to explore their wooded property. And the see the doggies :) I appreciated getting myself away from the internet, although we did have good enough cell signal to be able to access the web when needed. I enjoy tent camping but did not have the energy or time for it right now and this was the perfect middle ground between tent camping and being home. I plan to recommend this cabin to my friends too and hope that we can even visit it together the next chance we can get away.

We have plenty of room, so bring yours too if you have them. We will gladly show you around, but you may enjoy exploring the acreage and showing yourself around, and we completely respect that! Your gonna love it here, but you’ll have to leave it so that you’ll appreciate it when you come back!

You're welcome to fish in the pond that has plenty of shade and sun, or sit around the bonfire site where we have benches provided and roast marshmallows. With two easy-access large tree houses, bench swings and a big picnic shelter, there's lots of room to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. You might encounter wildlife like: deer, mink, or geese, but you're sure to see our chickens and ducks running around and hear our rooster crow in the morning. Depending on the time and season, we offer several hands on experiences with berry picking, chicken tending, food processing, gardening, and general light land maintenance like checking the trails for down limbs and trash. With gorgeous views and the convenience of being just 10 minutes from University Southern Indiana or 15 minutes from restaurants and stores, we welcome you to camp with us.
