This is a hidden gem in the outskirts of Gary. Located on the Calumet river is this amazing horse farm with 3 horses and 4 ponies. It’s 1 mile off of the 80/94 and 65 highway. Only a 45 min drive from Chicago. We also offer free parking to Miller Beach on Lake Michigan which is only a 10 min drive to there and the Indiana Dunes. Thank you for stopping to look at our Hipcamp, The Mannex — short for the Man’s Annex, since I have a pole barn with my tools and toys on this property.
This is my second year hosting campers, and my first year was such a hit that I decided to raise the bar for our guests. We really enjoyed meeting everyone who came through and helping them visit the beautiful Indiana Dunes National Park, which this campsite sits right inside of. Because of our prime location inside the Dunes National Park boundaries and how nicely this camp is set up, I’m confident this is one of the best Hipcamps in Northwest Indiana by a long shot!
The Mannex is a couple-acre property located between HWY 12 and the South Shore Tracks (an electric interurban train). There’s a station just 0.4 miles to the west for quick day trips to Chicago! We are 1.4 miles from the beach. Bring bikes so you can lock up at the beach and skip the parking hassle — spots are tough to get in summer, and you’ll need a National Park parking pass.
We’ve upgraded the site with an improved firepit, two Trex chairs, and a side table. There are two 13’ Pawleys Island two-person hammocks, string lights on a timer and dimmer, running water, 30-amp RV service, and 110v power. A lockbox has amenities: area guide, bug spray, extension cords, fire starters, matches, lanterns, Frisbees, footballs, and bean bags for cornhole. Seasoned firewood is included (please use the wire mesh dome on the pit).
We also have a Trex octagonal picnic bench, and new this year — a deluxe flushable outhouse with sink so you don’t have to fill your holding tank. Because of that, we now welcome tent campers too!
Aside from hiking the dunes and enjoying the beaches, the Mannex is centrally located to lots of great spots. Beverly Shores is an Official Bird Town USA and a hotbed for birdwatching — you might even spot our local celebrities, a mated pair of Bald Eagles and their eaglet!
Good eats nearby at The Goblin and Grocer (family-friendly with a great bar and outdoor seating) and Joe & Freddie’s to the east with excellent bar food.

This is my favorite Hipcamp I’ve ever been to. Beautiful location, lake and pretty flower views. Fire pit, onsite bathroom with washing station. The owner was very friendly and has a great store insite. My family and I felt safe, welcomed and enjoyed a private gorgeous view.

Right in the heart of Indiana Dunes National Park! Geoff was an exceptionally accommodating host, providing more than enough campfire wood, space and privacy. My kids were so excited to see a glow in the dark football, bag toss, and complimentary s’mores fixings. Albeit, the train isn’t necessarily ideal for some travelers, my kids were excited every time it zoomed by…and Geoff’s listing is entirely transparent of his space to the Amtrak. We were able to easily bike to the campground, dunes and the beach, which was a major perk. Geoff even stopped out to help my son adjust his bike seat! A wholesome asset to the hipcamp community.

I was impressed by the site - I had camped at traditional campgrounds in the past, so this site (embedded among blueberry bushes and a small pond) was a cozy surprise. There was room to hike around, stores nearby if you forgot bug spray, and chickens, if that's your thing. Highly recommend.

Nice private and quiet place. I had no problems with my low ground clearance car. Fire pit and chairs available but I didn’t use them. The mosquitos are out in July force here, but I was prepared for that. I slept comfortably in my car, and had no issues. I’m sure the site changes through the seasons. I would stay again.

Our stay was short, but this campsite was absolutely perfect. The property was peaceful, well-maintained, and exactly what we were looking for.
One of the highlights was the on-site organic store at Perkins Good Earth Farm. We picked up several items, and everything we bought was fresh and absolutely delicious. It was such a unique touch that really added to the experience.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. Highly recommend this Hipcamp to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway with the added bonus of amazing farm-fresh products.

We had an incredible time at Derek’s place! His horses and goats were incredibly friendly, which added to the fun. It was my nephew’s very first camping trip, and he absolutely loved it. If you’re camping during blueberry picking season (eg July), you will be sharing the farm with many blueberry pickers during the day, but in the evening and at night you’ll have the place to yourself.
