We purchased our 45 acre farm in 1997, since then we have operated a sustainable small organic farm.
In January of 2018 we purchased 58 more acres that is attached to our land.
The property has a greenhouse and about a half acre of field that we raise vegetables and fruit on.
We have a 3 acre pond with a naturally sustaining fish population, that we swim and boat in. We have some news for everyone from new campers to those that have visited before, we had our pond dredged this fall and winter (2025-2026). this was a much needed improvement for the ecology of the pond and it's inhabitants. We do want everyone to know it will look different for a while. There were trees that had to be removed from the north and east side of the pond, and until we can get the soil moved that came out of the pond, there will be piles of soil around the pond. The depth of the pond will be low until we receive enough rain to fill it back up (we didn't drain it completely, but it is much lower right now). We are keeping site 2 closed for 2026 so the grass has a chance to grow back. We will be adding a few more sites once the pond area is landscaped. There are hiking trails that go through many small pastures and woods with streams running through them.
Plenty of wildlife, hiking and mountain biking areas. We have a certified kitchen at the farm and have products raised and/or made on the farm for folks to purchase.
Ice is available at the farm $5/8 pound bag.
Supposedly our house is haunted and there are a couple of haunted sites within 15 miles of the farm, Anderson Cemetery and Witch's Bridge.
Nearby Taylorville has a Walmart, Aldi, Kroger, and many small local businesses. There is a YMCA and a few parks, in Taylorville.
Lake Sangchris State Park is close by. The capital of Illinois, Springfield, is 35 miles from the farm.

It’s about a 5 minute drive to Gillespie lake where the fishing is excellent also they have a really nice beach roped off for swimming and it’s free of charge.
Experience taking a nice hot shower in an outdoor shower. Also there is a sink with running water available and a private porta-potty. There is one 50 amp electric outlet for a camper Available for an additional $10 a night fee. Which can be reduced to 30 amps if needed. Please let us know at the time of booking to reserve the electrical outlet otherwise we cannot guarantee availability.
This is a delightful place to be if your searching for that farm experience! Come visit for a night or stay a few days I’ve been told by many of my visitors that they want to live here! Warning if you are not fond of animals or if you are allergic to cats or dogs this probably isn’t a good choice for you. Pitch your tent near the creek (site 1) in a completely private site (kids can sleep in the truck bed topper or fort if they'd like) or on the field to the side of the house (site 2) for a semi-private spot nearest to the bathroom and with a wood chip drive entrance for larger vehicles or (site 3) a semi- private spot down by the creek and the hay bales to the left of the house. (Or pick a spot of your choosing). Enjoy the farm animals, walk the property, build a fire, and enjoy the outdoors!
There are more animals to pet from April through October (typically we have bunnies, chickens, sheep, cats, dogs, alpacas, miniature horses, horses, pig, goat, etc.). In the winter the horses, alpacas, chickens, dogs, cats and sometimes bunnies are available to visit.

The creek at times is swimmable, other times it's walkable, and sometimes in the heat of July it's very shallow. There is a zip line, log or bridge to cross the creek.
There is a state park (Ft. Daniel) less than 5 minutes away and others a bit further (Spitler or Sand Creek)
Horseback riding may be available upon request - $25.00 per person or $50.00 per family.
There is a large shaded playground in the front yard for the kids with a trampoline, small zip line, ninja line, slack line, silks, climbing dome, hammocks, etc.

The Legend of Possum Hill is an old one. Most likely named thus even before the settlers arived in St. Louis. Before the great expansion west and before the Gateway Arch graced the sky. Wild was the west and animals roamed at will never having seen a man. The acient Indian tribe of Cahokia once had its own travelers who left their mounded cities of pyramids to explore and hunt for new adventure. It was on one of these travels a great storm arose from the spring sky bringing ice down from the heavens. The Indian party was hard pressed to find shelter from such turbulent winds, rain and it was even claimed they witnessed some snow blended in as well well! This particular spring the waters had risen quite high . With this latest storm the creeks and rivers were rushing over their banks. The Indians knew they had to find high ground. They knew they would only be safe in a shelter high enough the raging waters could not breach. Just when they were giving up hope for a suitable place they passed through a low lands grove treading through ankle deep waters when the land started to rise. And rise it did! Up they went up a steep climb and as they crested they found a large grove of hickories, Sycamore and Oak trees. The Indians prized such trees for their strong hard wood and towering hight. They found safety within them and upon chance several hollows in the ancient trees and quickly sheltered themselves in pairs. They weathered until the suns golden rays stretched accross the small pond. In one hollow a young Indian stirred and and he and his companion left their shelter. Reaching back into the tree they grabbed their packs and found hidden behind them, a family of possums who also hIad hid from the storm. Upon return to Cahokia the young Indian told of their travels and remembering the sheltering family of marsupials, he named the place in their honnor because they shared their shelter. We arrived and were met by Hank , who gave us the rundown on the property and the available campsites. He got us a bit of firewood and kindling to complement what we brought from home, and we drove over to our site. We set up our tent and headed to a local store for some camp snacks. After dinner, we got a little fire going, got our camp chairs, and broke out the snacks (and a lovely cigar for me). It was an amazing evening!
Now, for the review…Hank was friendly and informative…a great host! Unfortunately for us, Aissa was not there, so we’ll have to meet her next time. The property was beautiful, and the campsite we selected was well-maintained with some beautiful trees (including one right outside the window of our tent…what a view!). Our campsite was surrounded by fields, so we had complete privacy. The only minor drawback was the sound of nearby traffic, but I’ve yet to find a campsite where this isn’t a thing. It wasn’t overly loud and didn’t impact our experience at all. There were facilities available (such as a washroom), but we didn’t use them. We bring our own privy tent and camp toilet, so we didn’t need them.
Unfortunately, we only had one night to spend, but it was great. I would definitely recommend Aissa and Hank’s property to any future Hipcamper!

Met the owner and she mentioned they do several events for veterans groups including the coming weekend. As a former Marine it was great to hear.

We had a very nice stay! We ordered wood and they delivered it right to the firepit. The pond was gorgeous and there were birds everywhere! We were on our way to the Cahokia Mounds and loved that this happened to be a related historical place to stop before that visit. Thank you for sharing your home.

Loved the property and the safeness we all felt. My children loved it and had a great time. Site 4 is not a drive up site you will have a short walk to it. It is definitely worth it!! You are surrounded by trees on both sides and you get a perfect view of the pond. Karmen and her family are super welcoming and accommodating. We will definitely be back in the summer!! All in all just be respectful and you will receive the same.

The hosts were friendly, accommodating and very responsive to messages. The fresh eggs were great!
We stayed at Site 1 which was close to the shared driveway, but was lined by shrubs for privacy. It also had a fire pit.
We were there in mid March, so there weren't a lot of other people around, but the sites seemed spacious.
The best part - the wildlife on the pond was out in full force and it made for some great ambient sleeping noise!!
Easy drive to the Mississippi River and the St. Louis area. If you're driving back to the camp after sunset just know it's going to be DARK and it might be a little tricky to see your turns. Not a down side at all, just something to think about if you're not used to that ;-)

It's always lovely staying here. I really appreciate Crystal's campground amenities (heated bathroom with shower, laundry facility) and the serene atmosphere here. My dogs and I feel very comfy and I loved looking up at the stars at night. As a solo woman traveler I feel very safe here each time I visit.

It was a safe place to stay, and the bathrooms had a heater in them which was nice given how cold it was. There was no hand soap or toilet paper, so prepare accordingly. The website and listing doesn’t make it exactly clear but this is largely an open concept RV park, limited wildlife, with several long term residents. It is right next door to a pipeline plant that has very bright lights on all night long. It isn’t the most peaceful location because of that, and isn’t where I’d recommend going to for a getaway retreat. But it is safe and has some nice amenities. Worked out good for a place to sleep on a long roadtrip. Also just as an fyi for the potable water, there is a hookup setup for water if you have an RV. If you do not have an RV though, you will need to use the bathroom sink. We boiled it and it was fine.

We were the only campers staying that weekend so they were happy to let us pick our spot and got a fire pit moved for us so we could stay local to our spot for the most part. Their barn and land is gorgeous, and they were equipped with helpful items for campers far beyond what we expected when booking our stay. Aissa and Hank themselves were both very kind and welcoming and made us feel very safe and comfortable. They were around if we needed anything but did not make us feel hovered over and did not interrupt our privacy whatsoever. We had a very sweet and slow weekend, exactly what we were looking for and needed! We would definitely come back and enjoy another weekend here.

Camp Lakewood was perfect for the few nights I stayed there. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Plus, it was really nice to have Fatso's Pizza just a 30 second walk away. The pizza there was excellent!

2 nights at Timberline Ridge
This was a wonderful place to unwind. The house had pretty much everything you could need. I was able to show up with just the clothing and food that I needed. I was there during the week so it was extremely quiet and peaceful. My favorite part was kayaking on the pond (kayak and paddle board provided). The host also responded very quickly to any questions I had. I would definitely stay again.

Group trip
This is our second time visiting Bear Creek Farm and it was once again Amazing! Camp sites are clean and spacious along with fantastic service from Debbie and the fam. Wood was provided for us at our camp site and although it did rain during our stay, we still had an awesome time here. Though we couldn't keep our fire going due to the rain we were greeted with a delicious breakfast that Matt prepared for us. I am so happy to have found Bear Creek Farm and ranch and will definitely be coming back.
