nearby; trails and several species of birds live on the property including Japanese Pheasants. On clear nights the skies provide excellent ambient viewing of the moon, planets and constellations. The campsites and cottage are located in the woods near a shower and flushing toilet and the property is off grid with the goal to establish an example of sustainable lifestyles and ecosystems. Camping equipment is available upon request and the cottage is furnished with a basic kitchen. The grounds also include a screen room with a grill, tables, chairs and a fire pit. Local fruits and vegetables are grown on the property and the greenhouse provides food. Solitude is available for those who seek silence and immersion in nature and a number of state and county beaches are within a forty minute drive. The focus is providing a quiet environment and an opportunity for solitude away from the distractions of urban lifestyles. Beaches are about forty five minutes and the drive to Hilo is about 25 miles.

We sell our fruits ripe and cut ready to eat at our roadside fruit stand, open 10-6 daily including holidays! We serve local fresh juices and machete open coconuts to drink ice cold.
We grow mango, durian, lilikoi, star fruit, chocolate sapote, buddhas hand citrus, finger limes, tangerines and tangelos, jackfruit, tree grapes, mangosteen, white pineapples, mountain apples, berries, spices and much more. We are home to dozens of rescue animals, many who came from Puna during the 2018 lava flow. Meet peaceful sheep, lambs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and a lovable pet pig. Not to mention our friendly farm cats.

As this is agricultural lands, there are many critters. Dogs, chickens, pheasants, peacock, mongoose, and many birds. Tge invasive coqui frog is annoying to some and calming to others.
The micro climate here swings from warm and dry to wet quickly. Best to always prepare for rain.
There is snorkeling, beaches, local food, Cafe, BBQ, poke, fish-n-chips, grocery, Sunday farmers market and hiking nearby.
It is peaceful here, but also an active farming community.
As an organic farm, we put alot of effort into soil building and as such, there are soft places that will be damaged by the weight of a vehicle. Staying on the driveway is best. We will guide you to where you need to go.
Our road is paved, but bumpy. Any vehicle will make it without damage if driven slowly. 1 to 4mph tops. *Be sure to avoid the camper rental companies that restrict certain roads.

The spaceWe started our Homestead over 7 years ago on a lava 3 zone in an O'hia forest. We're conveniently situated between Volcano National Park, Historic Pahoa Village, and Hilo's Port Town. We were suggested by many after our first 5 years here to open our homestead to others looking for a simple reprieve from the weight of the go-go world with hopes that people leave more connected to go with the flow. We hope by welcoming you to our homebase for your Big Island adventures we'll be able to help connect more people to the biophilia that has brought such tranquility to our lives. Aloha Aina!!
Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems.
Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :)
We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana.
We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!!
Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway.
Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

The bioreserve features 14 acres of riverfront Cloud forest. Mutiny Farms is 100% off-grid. There is currently no power available at either site. You will need to bring flashlights and rechargeable battery packs if you require any portable power.
The property is about a 15 minute drive to Ocean View town center, and about an hour to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Ocean View is the only community between Captain Cook and Volcano with restaurants, grocery stores, and other amenities.
There are dogs, cats, and peacocks living on the farm. There are a variety of native and food plants growing on the property. At this elevation, the climate can be quite chilly, so please come prepared for the weather.

Local fruits and vegetables are grown on the property and the greenhouse provides food. We are home to dozens of rescue animals, many who came from Puna during the 2018 lava flow. Meet peaceful sheep, lambs, chickens, ducks, turkeys, geese and a lovable pet pig. As an organic farm, we put alot of effort into soil building and as such, there are soft places that will be damaged by the weight of a vehicle. Staying on the driveway is best. We will guide you to where you need to go.
Our road is paved, but bumpy. Any vehicle will make it without damage if driven slowly. 1 to 4mph tops. *Be sure to avoid the camper rental companies that restrict certain roads.

We're conveniently situated between Volcano National Park, Historic Pahoa Village, and Hilo's Port Town. We were suggested by many after our first 5 years here to open our homestead to others looking for a simple reprieve from the weight of the go-go world with hopes that people leave more connected to go with the flow. We hope by welcoming you to our homebase for your Big Island adventures we'll be able to help connect more people to the biophilia that has brought such tranquility to our lives. Aloha Aina!!
Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems.
Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :)
We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana.
We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!!
Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway.
Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

HVNP has a visitor's center to get information about the park, hiking trails throughout its boundaries, steam vents and the awe-inspiring caldera, which is the location of the volcano's lava pool. At night, the glow from the lava in the caldera can be seen at the park.
Our campsite is also an 18 mile or 29 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport and the town of Hilo, Hawaii.

Sleep under the stars on the slopes of the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa. Located at 3700’ on a 250 year old lava flow, enjoy camping in a native forested lot that is accessible by 2WD vehicle.
This is a great base location to enjoy activities on the south side of Big Island, including Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park, Papakolea (Green Sand Beach), Punalu’u (Black Sand Beach), and Ka Lae (South Point). Break up your island wide cruise and spend more time in scenic Ka’ū, one of the last bastions of old Hawai’i.
Mutiny Farms is 100% off-grid. There is currently no power available at either site. You will need to bring flashlights and rechargeable battery packs if you require any portable power.
The property is about a 15 minute drive to Ocean View town center, and about an hour to Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Ocean View is the only community between Captain Cook and Volcano with restaurants, grocery stores, and other amenities.
There are dogs, cats, and peacocks living on the farm. There are a variety of native and food plants growing on the property. At this elevation, the climate can be quite chilly, so please come prepared for the weather.

Weekend Trip to The Tranquil Homestead
If we could give this stay ten stars we absolutely would—maybe even more. Esther and Christopher were incredibly accommodating and couldn’t be more charming. They are kind, attentive, and you can tell they really love their homestead. The Tropical Duck has everything you need: a comfy bed in a cool bedroom; a modern composting toilet; hot shower, porch with a shade so you can enjoy it rain or shine; and a kitchen that has everything you need—-including a stove and oven. The space is private and peaceful. Great stargazing too.
And the ducks and peafowl! I can’t say enough how cute it was to see them waddle down in the morning. Esther and Christopher give you feed for them and my word they are so cute. Rainbow eucalyptus have been on my bucket list and what a treat to have them right there too! So gorgeous.
If you’re interested in homestead living, this is a great space to give that a try and see how it can be done sustainably and comfortably. Even if you’re not, you’ll have a delightful, peaceful, and comfortable stay. Esther and Christopher are warm and welcoming. Highly, highly recommend this stay.

Chris and Esther were extremely attentive hosts, they were very communicative and welcoming of questions or needs from us as guests. At the same time they gave us plenty of space so that the place still felt very private. The tiny home/cabin was perfectly comfortable and had everything you need to enjoy a cozy/rainy day ant home and was an inspiring example of how one can live off grid in Hawaii. The property is beautiful with gorgeous eucalyptus trees and the ducks/peacocks were wonderful entertainment. Esther and Chris provide feed for you to give to the birds and I greatly enjoyed watching the ducks waddle their way down the path each morning wagging their tails! The location was close enough to Hilo that it felt very easy to run errands/enjoy the city and is also super quick to the national park if you’re lucky enough to be here during an eruption. We would definitely stay here again!

4 nights at Lava Rock Cabin ~ Off Grid Hale
This is a nice private hideaway type cabin. It is about 15-20 minutes to the main road, so it really does feel away from it all, tropical, and junglely. We really enjoyed the sounds of the insects and frogs at night, and the rain on the roof the night it rained. The beds were quite comfortable, situated in two separate rooms. My friend had the loft room, and she really enjoyed it. (Careful on the stairs/ladder)
The pump toilet down below is a bit of a hassle, but it works fine, and reminds you that you’re roughing it a bit, (a hipcamp after all)
We came up with our own system for nighttime, which you can guess, (regarding bathroom).
We had the place to ourselves for three nights, then neighbors arrived the fourth night. It still felt quite private.
Sona greeted us upon arrival and explained all nuances. Communication was excellent.
We visited Volcanoes National Park two days during our stay. The cabin is conveniently located for that. We found the best nearby coffee at Hilo Coffee Mill a few miles towards Hilo.

Robert was very communicative with directing us to the site and where to stay once we arrived and where amenities were located! We liked being on the property for the night and really loved having a nice, very clean bathroom and shower! We were the only ones on the property that evening but you might have neighbors close if there were multiple groups staying at one time! This spot was a great choice for us in this southern area of the island!

The property was undeveloped but that made it fairly private and more immersive. We saw a lot of birds, which we loved. Colin was very communicative which was helpful in finding our spot and enjoying our time there. If you’re looking for a spot to just sleep for a night, this is a great choice! But if you want more amenities, it might be best to look elsewhere.

This was such an amazing experience! It felt so private, yet only a 30 minute drive from Hilo and just a short distance to the main entrance of the park. Cozy and the cool evening weather made it feel like camping, but without the hassle of setting everything up. The bed was seriously the most comfortable bed I’ve been in while traveling. Kitchen was great and enough to cook basic meals.
Esther and Christopher were such gracious and attentive hosts. We were able to do laundry and check out some of the highlights of things to do that they recommended. The ducks and peacocks were a treat to see in the mornings and feed.
Great value for the price. As stated in the listing, bring your own drinking water (we picked up a large jug from the store). It was surprisingly cool at night, which was a welcome treat from the heat and humidity during the day as we traveled. Enough cell service but we didn’t use the internet provided. Laundry takes about an hour and 45 minutes on the property, and you’ll arrange a time to use the machines (but they have soap and dryer sheets.)

We had two of three houses on the land. The houses are powered by solar with kitchens, hot water showers and bio pump flush toilets. The surroundings are lush and beautiful. About 20-25 minutes to Volcano. Lovely stay.

We had a beautiful view from our campervan parking pad.
We arrived just at dark on a Christmas Eve. The drive in is well paved, though moderately bumpy.
Because we caught some rain overnight, I was concerned about traction the next morning for our departure. The pad and driveway presented no problem.
We were a close distance to a fire ring and porta potty. The restroom was very clean.

We loved every bit of Christopher and Esther’s place! We thought about camping but are so glad we stayed here. The cabin is dialed in, with thoughtful features throughout. The hosts are as thoughtful as any we’ve ever had on Hipcamp or AirBnb. A perfect blend of friendly but giving lots of privacy. It was about 25 minutes to Hawaii Volcanos NP, close enough to make a late dash to see the lava! Highly recommended place to stay.

We spent one night on Bob’s beautiful property and couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The place was very peaceful, we felt completely safe, and having a bathroom with a shower was a big plus.
Bob and his wife were wonderful hosts. They even picked a fresh orange for us from their tree and gave us so many great tips for our stay on the Big Island. Without Bob’s prediction, we probably would have missed the incredible volcano eruption.

Weekend Trip to 🌈 Rainbow’s End Farm & Homestead!
We enjoyed our comfy bed and deck perch in the jungle. The open kitchen was lovely to cook in. Wendy was away, but communication was excellent, and the caretakers were available, helpful and welcoming. We were driving a Honda Fit with very low clearance, so we drove the rocky road VERY slowly, and planned to come and go only once a day (we spent two nights). I would stay there again for sure, but only if I had a vehicle with higher clearance.

I loved the overall vibe of staying on Kelly's land. Everything impressed me from the minute I arrived. You can tell that the owner's have put a lot of time and sweat into making it what it is. I stayed in a Sprinter, but it was great to have a hot outdoor shower. The puppies were so sweet and playful. It rained that night, but it just added to the atmosphere.

We absolutely loved staying at Hale lo! We arrived at night so the property was very dark, enough to have really good stargazing. Looking for the cabin in the dark was an adventure in itself! As we were walking around, the coquis were singing and we could hear the river running next to our cabin once we found it. The beds were comfy. My son especially loved sleeping in the loft bed! The waterfall is stunning and we wished we had time to spend a few days and explore the land a bit more!

Faris’ Farm exudes care, consideration, and beauty. I felt immediately at home, and welcomed into the fold — not only by Brian and Patrick, but also the four-legged and winged ones that make up their extended family. I relished my quiet moments on the property, bathing in the life and the growth surrounding the cabin. My two days, though full, were not enough, and I would have happily stayed more. I left with sincere admiration and appreciation for all the work that has gone into the land, and the dedication and devotion required to evolve it into a thriving food forest. This is nice land to stay on, if you’re lucky and the sky is clear at night the stars are unREAL. Colin was very responsive and helpful. It’s a bring your own everything type of place, but there is a portapotty that works just fine for what you need it for (hasn’t been serviced in a while but it was perfectly functional and not gross. There’s a beach with a shower not too far away so that’s helpful! There are pigs roaming around the shadows at night but none bothered us or came near our camp while we were outside. We really liked our stay and would stay again and recommend to folks that can handle the minimal amenities like we can. Thanks Colin!!

Weekend Trip to 🌈 Rainbow’s End Farm & Homestead!
We loved staying at Wendy’s! She was an incredibly generous host and communicated really well. As soon as we landed in Kona, she let us know that a volcano was fountaining, told us to head straight there, and had no issues with our late check-in as a result! Literally a once in a lifetime opportunity we would have missed if not for Wendy.
The space itself was beautiful. Wendy’s property is gorgeous and she gave us a lovely tour of all the fruit trees she’s planted. The little cabin we stayed in was cozy and we loved having breakfast out in the deck. If we’re ever in the area again, we’d stay at Wendy’s in a heartbeat.
