Volcano Island Farm is located on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. We are 10 minutes from Honokaʻa Town and 20 minutes from Waipiʻo Valley Lookout.
We are a small agricultural farm with gardens, hydroponic greenhouses (coming soon), chickens for eggs, and acres of macadamia nut orchards. Most of the property is open green space with plenty of shade from trees—as long as you don’t mind the occasional falling nut.
We offer two types of camping. Traditional camping is available for guests with their own tent, which can be set up anywhere near the bathhouse in the grass or under a tree.
We also have tents and camping equipment available for use as needed. In addition, we offer the opportunity to stay in our restored Volkswagen van.
The van sleeps a couple very comfortably with a full- to queen-size bed, a swivel chair, and interior lighting. It is cozy and comfortable and includes a picnic table and outdoor lighting in the surrounding area.
The bathhouse is shared among all campers. We typically have no more than four campers at a time, so it is generally easy to share the space. The bathhouse includes a hot shower, sink with mirror, private toilet room, off-grid hot tub (heats in about 20 minutes), and an outdoor deck area for eating or relaxing.
Volcano Island Farm is a calm and quiet retreat from everyday life. We look forward to hosting you and hope you enjoy your relaxing stay. We live on 19 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place). Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there, and we recommend a 4WD to get to our place, since a recent storm washed our road out. Waiting on FEMA. Go slow, the road is rough and bumpy in places..
Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot!

Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping.
It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things.
The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water.
Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is a gas grill and propane single burner. Bathroom has manual flush toilet,.
This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. You can charge your phone and have a lamp in your cabin. No wifi. Good cell coverage.
The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing!
Our glamping cabins are in the front 3 acres. The back 17 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve.

The quiet neighborhood of small farms also lends itself to hill walking and exploring. While not "off grid," the space is intentionally peaceful and screen free. Wifi is not available in the space itself, but can be accessed nearby in our main parking area. Cell service is excellent for most providers, allowing for guests to use their own "hotspot" as needed for staying connected.
Nearby beaches offer stunning views and spectacular snorkeling. The home is well stocked for beach visits-- towels and snorkel gear are available for your use.

Weekend Trip to Kona comfy RV w/million dollar view
Yes, the driveway is an adventure, but totally worth it! The RV is adorable, well-cared for and as private as you could ask for. The ocean, the birds, the flowers, the noisy frogs and the curious geckos are charming. The panoramic sunset views are unbelievable. Chris and Mark are kind, friendly, helpful and interesting to talk with. I could have just hung out on that covered porch for weeks, contentedly. A fabulous experience, as long as you understand the limitations of any camper, and are confident with four-wheel driving.

Weekend Trip to The Kikala Waterfall Lodge
Wonderful cabin! WE loved hearing the river as we sat on the lanai and as we slept! The common-area building is fully stocked with cooking equipment, and there are two full bathrooms.
Swimming below the enarby waterfall on the property was a joy. But we were only there for less than 24 hours. I am sure there is much more!

We stayed in 3 places on the island and this was by far our favorite. There was plenty of space, it was clean and lovely, well stocked kitchen, and the setting was beautiful including the swimming hole with waterfall! (which sadly we didn't get to go in as we were out so much)...as others have said, I would have liked to have stayed there longer and just enjoyed the property. Everything about it was easy and convenient. They even had a TV and DVD collection- though we were mostly offline for our week in Hawaii, it was perfect to watch a silly. movie on one of the nights. Would definitely go back, thank you Hamakua Guest House (Rover View Family House)!

This little gem was absolutely lovely. It had everything we needed for a couple nights on the big island. The fact that it had a clean, fully functional bathroom and running, hot water was a huge draw for us. Being able to fall asleep to the sound of the creek was incredibly peaceful. We were able to get the jungle camping feel, but get back on the plane clean and refreshed. Absolutely would recommend.

2 nights at Gingerhill Farm Retreat
I loved staying in the Jungle Canopy! It was incredible to hear the birds in the morning when making coffee, and hear the frogs sing at night. The bed was super comfy and it was awesome to have my own bathroom with the cool outdoor shower (with hot water!!). The Canopy is a short walk from the parking area so it’s easy to bring your bag up, just don’t forget to bring some bug repellent for the mosquitos, and don’t forget to go say hi to the goats and chickens down in the garden! This place is a true delight and I’m excited to come back one day.

I personally loved the hammock camping although it may not be everyone's cup of tea. The first night the rain woke me up but by the third night the sound of the rain was the perfect white noise and improved my sleep. This place is just 20 minutes or so from all the beaches in Hilo and was really nice. I would recommend

1 night at Gilligan's Islands
Donie has such a caring heart. He is so kind and went way above and beyond for me to get wifi working. He has a kind heart and a gentle soul and really wants to always do his best. You'll be in good hands staying with him! The bed was very comfortable, he treats his guests to fine linen! Egyptian cotton sheets and towels and they don't smell like scented soap. He made me coconut cream the next day for my tea and sent me off with blessings. It was a great experience to see his setup at the Lava Fields. I felt comfortable and cozy. I highly recommend giving his place a try!

1 night at Hamakua Christmas Tree Forest
The bungahigh was such a wonderful experience !! Amazing place to wake up in the morning, comfortable bed, clean sheets, and incredible views. Nancy & Richard are such kind and welcoming hosts. Nancy welcomed us with homemade banana bread. I would reccomend to all my friends!

With pets
This was a really cute and cozy glamping spot. I would still bring some basics such as utensils, a knife and a flashlight but otherwise it has more than what you need. There is drinking water, coffee, cooking utensils, stove, sink, etc. It was really nice that you can bring pets too, my dog loved it so much! My 7 yo was very excited to be there too. I highly recommend staying here and experiencing the Hamakua Coast.

We loved our stay here. We arrived in the evening and everything was amazing! They had towels and blankets we slept well in the hammocks (although it is very loud at night when it rains so I would suggest bringing earplugs). The bathrooms were very clean and they also provided soap which was nice. We did not use the kitchen but it was very clean and tidy when we passed by. Lots of stray kitties around. There is river access with an area to swim which my partner loved!! Highly recommend and would come again

2 nights at Sacred Mauna Fern Forest Retreat
My husband and I stayed at Guava Cabin and absolutely loved it. It felt so quiet and private, and we loved hearing the birds all throughout the day and night. Falling asleep to the sound of the rain was perfect and made the whole experience feel so peaceful and relaxing. The hosts were also incredibly friendly and welcoming which made our stay even better. We’re already excited to come back and stay longer next time! :) Thank you!!

My brother and dad stayed at Ohia Cabin and had such a great time! They said it was the perfect size for two people and loved how quiet and private it felt. Being surrounded by the jungle made it feel so peaceful and connected to nature. Definitely a unique and relaxing stay!

1 night at Skyes Treehouses
This treehouse was a magical jungle DREAM! There are windows everywhere, allowing tons of natural light in as well as lovely views of the forest/greenery all around. If you want to sleep in, bring an eye mask because the bedroom is at the top of the treehouse and gets bright early (wasn’t a problem for us because we were getting up early anyway so waking up naturally to the morning light was nice). At night the frogs are loud but we enjoyed falling asleep to them. Everything about the bed is AMAZING—the mattress, pillows, and bedding are all wonderful. The vibe of the treehouse is so cozy and peaceful. We wish we could’ve stayed more than one night. It is a bit expensive but once you get there, you’ll see why. Absolutely book this place.
(The ONLY issue we had was initially finding the place. The directions say to look for a gazebo but there is definitely no gazebo. There’s a little carport out front but since we were looking for a gazebo we didn’t think we were art the right place.)
