11. Devil's Hopyard State Park

Devil’s Hopyard got its name from a couple of different stories, although it does sounds like a great name for a delicious india pale ale. The Hopyard part is in fact believed to have origins tracing back to a farmer who grew hops for brewing near Chapman Falls, the main attraction of this area. The Devil part likely comes from early settlers who tried to explain away the unique potholes in the stone around the waterfall with the supernatural.These potholes are actually perfectly explainable by science, go figure. As stones moved down stream, some would occasionally get trapped in an eddy, causing them to swirl around and erode the rock. The devil story is much more interesting though, which claims that the devil accidentally got his tail wet one day and was so angry, he burned holes in the stones with his hooves. Guess you'll have to go see it for yourself and make up your own mind on what truly happened. While you're there, make sure to check out the awesome hiking, fishing and mountain biking in the area. Devil's Hopyard State Park is just as full of outdoor activities as it is with history.

Each tree is beautiful in its own way, but perhaps no trunk is better for squeezing than those in the 200-year old white pine grove in the Whittemore Recreation Area of the Peoples Forest. One can only hug so many trees, however, so it’s a good thing there are lots of other things to do in the American Legion and Peoples State Forests. The trails that wind through these wooded acres will keep hikers on their feet for days on end. I enjoyed my peaceful camping spot on Jessica's lovely land. There was plenty of firewood, if needed. I did not get to meet my host in person, but Jessica checked in by text to make sure I was doing ok. Her land is well maintained and the location is close to a State Park and to stores and shopping. The land is on a slight incline and it can get windy. Highly recommend and will make plans to return when it's a bit warmer!

The area is very quiet and private. There is water and electric available although we didn't need it. Communication was excellent and host was friendly and accomodating. We enjoyed meeting the goats and sheep. Perfect stay .

This was our first HipCamp experience and it did not disappoint. Very beautiful and secluded property with lovely sheep and goats to keep you company. Chris was very responsive and accommodating during our visit. We will definitely stay here again when in the NE area!

Tent camping on Margaret's land was so peaceful and atmosphere that it felt like a scene out of a movie. Words cannot describe how beautiful this campsite was and Margaret was very friendly and responsive on top of that.

Beautiful views, nice firepit and trees to park the cars under. Private and easy to get to off the road. There are beehives nearby, which would be important to know if someone has an allergy. Overall a nice place to camp.

Definitely recommended. I will love to go back next year during springtime Place is so private, love waking up in the morning to hear only nature,what a simple weekend getaway So relaxing and refreshing.My two dogs had fun with this hip camp.

Great place to camp. Tons of sheep and turkeys. There's cows and hogs. Fledge the Dog and Vel Vel the Cat are the best. Great location to visit SW mass at a great price. Felix and Maggie are great hosts.

A spontaneous end-of-season trip that turned out really well. Beautiful views over the pasture with sheep and some very curious cows, plus a friendly cat that stopped by often. The only downside was the train passing a few times during the night, but otherwise it was a peaceful and enjoyable stay.
