The Fisherman’s Cabin, hosted by Huts and Hills, has a wild and unique history. Originally it was built by two professors from Berkeley College as an annual mountain campsite. They used to make the pilgrimage every year from California to Colorado to come relax in the wonderful forest of the Lost Acres National Park. At the turn of the century, the Denver Wheel Club used to have their headquarters right next to the river just down Insmont Dr. and hosted a big bike race every year. This was before there was even a road to the mountains, and the only real public access to these lands were via the train from Denver! Today the Fisherman's Cabin is just a hop, skip and a jump outside downtown Bailey, Colorado and close to many mountain passes like Guanella and Kenosha. We regularly see chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits, mule deer, elk, moose, mountain lion (rare and usually at night), turkeys, bear, coyotes (they shy away due to our dogs) and LOTS of birds. Typically the only sound you're going to hear is the soundtrack of nature - it's so peaceful... Depending on the time of year, you can do any of the following: DURING FALL/WINTER/SPRING Snow is possible at any time! A HIGH CLEARANCE 4 X 4 IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO ACCESS THE PROPERTY SAFELY. The living space is an attached studio loft or "mother-in-law" suite complete with a king size bed and a separate memory foam mattress in the loft area. (NO CHILDREN allowed in loft under any circumstances) The space also includes a kitchenette complete with a microwave, outdoor propane grill, coffee maker, toaster and bar sink/mini fridge. Pets are allowed as long as they are well-behaved. There is a full private bathroom attached to the space as well. The caretaker/manager lives in the main home but have their own separate entrance and parking areas. Should you have any issues during your stay, they are available 24/7 for assistance. If you choose to bring your pup/s, there is a 1/4 acre fenced-in yard you and your furry family member are welcome to use, providing they are well-behaved. You'll have access to our 5 acres of property (seasonal stream below) as well as thousands of acres of National Forest and hundreds of miles of Forest Service Roads. Red Tail Retreat is 100% off-grid - we do not have electrical power like standard homes!! This doesn't mean we don't have electric at all, it just means that we rely on solar power to keep our battery bank charged (educational lessons available if you want to learn more about off-grid life and/or solar) What this means is that we live a conservative lifestyle in terms of resource use. The home operates similar to a normal home but with a few caveats. 1. We are very energy conscious - high draw appliances such as hairdryers and curling irons won't be able to be used unless it's during the day and sunny 2. We are very water conscious. We are on a well and have plenty of clean mountain spring water, but part of living off-grid is that our water is stored in a 150 gallon sterile tank. We manually fill the tank as needed - water pressure and temps are just like a normal home. You won't be responsible for filling the water, but we ask that guests just be conservative with usage. 3. We are 100% solar dependent and have our power through a bank of batteries. If there isn't sun or it's very cloudy, we may have to run the generator during the day but generally limit the generator use to the evening for 2-3 hours max - this is rare and only necessary if we go multiple days without sun Thank you in advance for understanding! Overview

With plenty of green space and a historic downtown, Parker is a charming city on the southeastern edge of Denver and surrounded by hiking, cycling, boating, and camping opportunities. Kids have plenty to do as well—Parker features a water park, trampoline park, and several riding stables right in town. There’s also a huge park for four-legged family members, including five acres of off-leash space and an agility course.

Where to go

Parker Town Center

Downtown Parker is known for its Victorian architecture and family-friendly offerings. The paved Sulphur Gulch Trail takes off right from downtown and connects to several other town trails. In winter, Parker is known for its unique ice trail, one of only a few in the country. It’s more like a winding ice river than an ice rink.

Aurora

Aurora is Denver’s largest suburb, just 25 minutes north of Parker. Along the way, you’ll pass Cherry Creek State Park, a large reservoir open to boating and paddle sports. The park marina has boats to rent and year-round campgrounds, making it one of the best places to tent and RV camp close to Denver. In Aurora, you’ll find several RV parks.

Colorado Springs

At the base of 14,115- foot tall Pikes Peak and just a little over an hour’s drive from Parker, Colorado Springs is a hot spot for outdoor adventure. World-class hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and cycling are all available within minutes of town, and Colorado Springs is home to the Garden of the Gods, a landscape of red rock towers and balanced rocks. Campers will find overnight options near town and in the surrounding national forest.

When to go

With beautiful year-round weather and an abundance of outdoor activities regardless of season, there is really no bad time to visit the Denver suburbs. The best time to visit depends largely on what you want to do. Summer is best for outdoor concerts, hiking, and camping in the mountains. Fall, when the summer crowds have diminished, is wonderful for sightseeing. Winter activities include ice skating, snowshoeing, and skiing.

Parker has grocery stores, department stores, and several chain outdoor stores.
Summer camping reservations fill quickly at Cherry Creek State Park. Reservations can be made up to six months in advance.
Although there’s no camping available at Castlewood Canyon State Park, just south of Parker, it’s a popular spot for hiking and rock climbing.
