In the 1950's and 60's, this was the site of the World's largest orchid farm. There is a book called The Royal Rancho, if you are a history buff. We are a farm on the beach just North of Santa Barbara and Goleta, Ca. You will camp in a historic, glass greenhouse with incredible ocean views. Inside is a cob pizza oven that works awesome. The Chumash called the peak of Mount Piños the center of the universe, or center of the world depending on the translation. This campground is at the southeast base of this mountain. The San Andreas fault is just about 8 miles away, and many other faults meet nearby. The mountains here are full of geological signs of the Forces that ripped away Santa Barbara from the North American plate as it was flipped upside down. This is the entrance to the Enchanted Forest. Learn more about this land: Lockwood Valley is so close to Los Angeles and other urban areas, but feels 1000 miles away. Our neighborhood is a gem within Lockwood Valley. The community has less than 20 residences so it is very rural, but neighborly. There are horses nearby, you will hear some roosters in the distance, and if you are lucky, you may hear the African lions or wolves from the next canyon over where there is a (fully contained) wildlife sanctuary called Steve Martins Working Wildlife (not the funny guy). Great secluded spot for a fully contained RV. Easy entrance from a good dirt road. The actual property of the site is 1/8 of an acre and is surrounded by forest and fields. A picnic table is nestled in a grove of trees next to a steel fire pit ring. Bring your hammock to relax under big shady piñon pines. The site is about 200 yards from the entrance to the Los Padres National Forest with great hiking, mountain biking, birdwatching, hunting, etc. There is currently no privacy barrier between the campsite and the dirt road, but the traffic is extremely minimal. There are two 12’x24’ horse corrals on the property. This area is ideal for horseback trail riding and the campsite location makes for the perfect base camp. This is a superb stargazing spot, far from the city lights. Many amateur astronomers come to this area for the dark skies. At a mile high, nights can be very cold, and in the winter it is possible to get up to a couple feet of snow. Weather conditions such as heavy rain or snow can make the roads and campsite impassable at times so cancellations are possible in this case (this happens a lot less than we would like, of course, because we need the precipitation!).

This eclectic Hipcamp is awesome and one of a kind. Do yourself a favor and skip the expensive hotels and Airbnbs and stay here! The host is very communicative, accommodating, and friendly. We would stay here again for sure!

There were many great 5 star reviews and in the end they were all accurate. Well kept campsite I didn't even know if any of the other 3 were being used because it was so quiet and private. We arrived just before dark which was a mistake as it would have been nice to settle in with time to spare and enjoy the sunset. Instead we enjoyed waking up to an incredible view. And perfect directions which helped us find the remote location without an issue. Bravo to the owners.

This was our second stay and it doesn't disappoint. The hosts are great - responsive, kind and helpful. We'll be back.

Plenty of space, larger campers may have slight difficulty with the access to this spot. But absolutely worth it! So private and safe!

Such a fun stay! The bunkhouse was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The hosts are very kind and. A great spot as long as you don’t mind a faint background of poultry noises. Would definitely come back!

2 nights at Sanctuary Cielo

We had a lovely time at Sanctuary Cielo. A peaceful setting with ample amenities. There are nice walking trails around the property that we enjoyed exploring with our two year old son. The campsite is in view of the house but there’s a privacy screen to keep things feeling private. Amber the host was warm and inviting but never intrusive. Highly recommend if you’re looking for something close to Santa Barbara!

It was incredibly calm and peaceful in the greenhouse and throughout the property. We could hear the ocean at night. It was really nice to be able to let our pups run around off-leash inside, especially in the morning so I could sleep in. Be sure to bring a towel for the shower.

What a wonderful cozy cabin this is! I stayed here on the way down to south Cali and it was a great remote stopover not too far from the main highway. Beautiful stars at night, responsive thoughtful host, lots of amenities in the cabin, super cozy bed. 10/10 for me:)

We ended up having to leave late and so arrived to the campsite much later than expected. Vivian was extremely accommodating. The outdoor shower was hot and just what we needed after a day of surfing too. It was a beautiful site in general

Weekend Trip to Arber-Moore's Ranch

Location is incredibly convenient to Lake Casitas, Ojai and Oak View, but still feels remote and secluded. Site was spacious, clean and beautiful, but could definitely use some improvements. More restrooms and showers, for one, and definitely a line of trees to block out the noise from the main road would be major upgrades. We were lucky to be the only group there that weekend, but I could imagine it being frustrating trying to schedule bathroom/shower time if the sites were full. From my brief conversations with the the owner, Vivian, however, it sounds like they're actively working towards those things already. Other than that, the toilet and shower were both very clean and functional. Shower was hot and pressure was good. Light pollution from Ojai is visible on the horizon, but the property itself is very dark and conducive to star gazing. Host was friendly, helpful, accommodating and communicative, but pretty hands-off otherwise.

This place was just what we were looking for. A quiet getaway in a beautiful setting. There is a farm and our toddler loved seeing the goats, chickens and donkey. We were shown great hospitality from the host and made us feel at home. Great hikes right outside the door! We were even able to purchase some meat and eggs from the farm! A unique experience all around, would highly recommend!
