1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. Our two-story home is located on a quiet street at 5771 feet. Lovely pine ceilings throughout the cabin contribute to the warm ambience. The 1000 sq. ft. interior is furnished in a modern style with a leather sofa and some cool abstract art on the walls. The living room has a wood stove and 50" smart HDTV with direct satellite & Blu Ray DVD. A skylight in the living room brings in lots of light.
The master bedroom (queen bed) is separate from the downstairs and reached via a spiral staircase leading up to French doors. The master bathroom adjoins the bedroom and has a skylight over the double length tiled shower. A second bedroom downstairs has a murphy bed with a queen size mattress. There is air conditioning in the living room as well as in the upstairs bedroom and 2 fans are provided-- although generally temps are not above 85 degrees on a hot day and generally drop into the 60's in the evening.
Upper and lower decks offer lovely views of Mt. Pinos and the San Emigdio range. Relax on the sunny decks or in the Adirondack chair near the pond surrounded by pine trees. Plan to do some bbqing--it is so pleasant to do some grilling on the upper deck bbq and dine outdoors.
Our cabin is clean and well-kept. It can comfortably accommodate 4 people. Please NO smoking or pets!
Mt. Pinos has the best view of the stars in So. California—star parties are common whenever there is a new moon. In addition, since we are in the Padres National Forest - wildlife (deer, raccoons, bobcat, fox, bunnies, squirrels, quail, stellar and scrub jays) abounds. Ra

1948- On January 1, 1948 a wildcatter named George Hadley, who had been oil prospecting in the valley for 10 years, made the first oil strike in the Cuyama Valley. Richfield Oil Company soon moved in and extracted nearly 300 million barrels of oil in just a few short years. To accommodate an exploding workforce in the early 1950s, the company built the town of New Cuyama, its infrastructure, public buildings, the Cuyama airstrip (L88) and all the industrial structures that are now home to Blue Sky. Richfield Oil Company, later merging with Atlantic Oil Company forming the Atlantic Richfield Oil Company (ARCO), created high-paying jobs, a safe and prosperous community, and developed schools, churches, and recreational areas for the employee-residents.1973- With dwindling production in the area and new discoveries in Alaska, Atlantic-Richfield Oil Company put the town of New Cuyama and its associated infrastructure up for sale. Word of an entire town for sale made its way to entrepreneur, Russell O’Quinn of the Foundation for Airborne Relief (FAR) and Mildred Dotson, a wealthy widow from Tulsa, Oklahoma. The two worked together to acquire the townsite and adjacent land. O’Quinn, an aviator, inventor, and test pilot, aspired to use the New Cuyama airstrip and facilities as a base for humanitarian relief and a non-profit trade school. Though not fully realized, FAR’s primary vision included utilizing converted military aircraft to airlift food and medical supplies to developing countries and global disaster areas. Dotson had loftier goals. Her plans included an 18-hole fly-in golf course, expansion of the Buckhorn Restaurant and Motel, and a 40- to 50-acre lake for amphibious landing and water sports. 1986- Another visionary, Harry Kislevitz, inventor of the popular design tool Colorforms® and founder of Future City/Villages International, sought to develop the site as a “City of Friendship,” an all-electric village of 5,000 earthen homes. The dwellings were to be designed by Nader Khalili, an Iranian-born architect who specialized in earthen structures, worked with NASA on prototypes for lunar homes and received an award from the United Nations for his work towards the development of low cost, sustainable structures for human shelter in impoverished and disaster prone environments. One 628-sq-ft Khalili prototype remains on the property today ("the Cantina"). Khalili went on to form the California Institute for Earth Art and Architecture, Cal-Earth, in Hesperia, CA.1993- Recognizing the transformative potential of clean, solar power and the attractiveness of a rural destination, entrepreneur Mike Nolan worked to develop the Solar Skypark and Big Sky Guest Ranch with Santa Barbara Architect, Barry Berkus. The Sky Park included plans for sixty-five fly-in residences on one-acre lots powered completely from clean, solar energy. The Big Sky Guest Ranch was intended to function as a clubhouse for Skypark residents complete with an equestrian center, a small subsistence farm, pool and plenty of enriching recreational activities. 2012- At the end of 2011, the Zannon Family Foundation made a long-term investment in acquiring the New Cuyama Airport property with the vision of rehabilitating the site to be a low-cost resource for programs and organizations working to advance sustainable living practices and technologies. Plans began soon after towards developing a framework and organization to develop the space and coordinate with prospective programs and institutions. In 2014 Blue Sky Sustainable Living Center ("Blue Sky Center") received 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status, endeavoring to reclaim this property for the public good. Today, Blue Sky Center provides unduplicated services and technical assistance to support small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as the local food system, with core work focused on community research and advocacy led by Cuyamans. Pine Mountain is one of Southern California's best-kept secrets--a small alpine village with a four-season climate. We have light snow in the Winter, spectacular wildflowers in Spring, and gorgeous Fall colors. It's a wonderful getaway—and yet so close!
Our two-story home is located on a quiet street at 5771 feet. Lovely pine ceilings throughout the cabin contribute to the warm ambience. The 1000 sq. ft. interior is furnished in a modern style with a leather sofa and some cool abstract art on the walls. The living room has a wood stove and 50" smart HDTV with direct satellite & Blu Ray DVD. A skylight in the living room brings in lots of light.
The master bedroom (queen bed) is separate from the downstairs and reached via a spiral staircase leading up to French doors. The master bathroom adjoins the bedroom and has a skylight over the double length tiled shower. A second bedroom downstairs has a murphy bed with a queen size mattress. There is air conditioning in the living room as well as in the upstairs bedroom and 2 fans are provided-- although generally temps are not above 85 degrees on a hot day and generally drop into the 60's in the evening.
Upper and lower decks offer lovely views of Mt. Pinos and the San Emigdio range. Relax on the sunny decks or in the Adirondack chair near the pond surrounded by pine trees. Plan to do some bbqing--it is so pleasant to do some grilling on the upper deck bbq and dine outdoors.
Our cabin is clean and well-kept. It can comfortably accommodate 4 people. Please NO smoking or pets!
Mt. Pinos has the best view of the stars in So. California—star parties are common whenever there is a new moon. In addition, since we are in the Padres National Forest - wildlife (deer, raccoons, bobcat, fox, bunnies, squirrels, quail, stellar and scrub jays) abounds. Ra

Sarah was a very gracious hostess. I was dry camping with a four-wheel pop up camper and thoroughly enjoyed my stay in the field next to the barn. The area was very serene quiet and had clean porta potty. Would love to explore the large property on a multi-day stay but couldn't this time as I'm driving through.
Cell phone coverage may be spotty but Starlink Mini kept me at full communication. Four wheel drive may be necessary depending on Road conditions seasonal.
Tip to finding her driveway: when traveling up Pine Cyn Road look for Seccombe Rd and her driveway is there (opposite direction)

These guys put the "glam" in glamping! Pink fluffy comfort in all corners. The coziest, comfiest bed ever. The place was well stocked with everything you would need. So quaint and quirky. And the farm animals were adorable! There are roosters, though, so be warned!

I could not recommend Sanctuary Cielo more!! I was joined by my Honey and our 2 pups and we were all welcomed to sanctuary cielo with open arms. The site is huge with a gas pire pit, a gas bbq, compost toilet (with TP and wet wipes!) lounge chairs, sofas, tables, a huge picnic table, mini fridge, more appliances than I could name (we took advantage of the electric kettle for tea). Decorated so tastefully and comfortably, it felt like an outdoor home in the best way. Everything you could need was thought of down to the tiny details! Amber and Gregory were so hospitable the entire time but they really went out of their way when the weather was planning on getting quite wet and invited us to stay indoors in their very comfortable loft. The hot tub is indeed a MUST! there's a warm outdoor shower to freshen up afterwards (nice big towels included). And we were warmly greeted on Valentine's morning with fresh home made blueberry and banana muffins! She had set out heart shaped plates and decor for us to make our Valentine's weekend extra special. This land is already magical but Amber transformed it into such an amazing outdoor space, we were already planning on coming back before our first sleep haha. Her land also has fun trails to explore, which we all enjoyed, but especially the puppies.

Lovely stay! I really enjoyed learning more about the ostriches during the tour. Lou was very informative. I also went home with some of the ostrich oil heat cream. It’s listed in the breakdown as $20 but I was charged $25.. just something to be mindful of. But all in all loved the experience and would stay again!

Ricky and Nathan were very personable kind and caring and explained how to operate everything for a seamless and very enjoyable stay . The yurt-like tent was spacious well decorated and warm at night . The outdoor private covered cabana offered a table barbecue cooking facility and all the cookware one could need . Bathroom and shower were private and clean. Outside fire pit surrounded by comfortable chairs .
The views were spectacular. The Terrain which included level as well as gently sloping features
Offered excellent hiking and meditation vistas .
The night sky was filled with billions of stars and morning calm was met with beautiful sounds of the animals waking . We enjoyed petting and visiting the goats ,pigs ,chickens and the roosters.
We look forward to our return and staying for longer.

Blue Sky was the perfect camp site for me. It was a little cold out at the end of December, but as long as you’re prepared, the weather is not too much of a problem. I arrived with no trouble, and the instructions were very helpful for finding my campsite, even in the dark. The tent platforms are sturdy. The showers run hot, and the communal areas were clean and comfortable. The communal cantina area was well stocked for cooking, and there are even fridges available. This is a really great stop for a road trip, or a few days stay. Host was responsive and proactive, providing activity guides and an informative welcome message. I was not personally bothered by the dogs barking. Altogether a great trip, thank you Blue Sky!

Catherine was really good with our kids. She communicated with us throughout the whole booking. Great little farm with 15 chickens, stable of houses and nosey dog. Great spot for some private camping.

Nice space to stay with basic amenities while visiting. The Center is an inspiring rural community improvement project supporting many local initiatives. Worth looking over the website and some print materials available on site to learn more. The tent campground is a bit sparse and exposed, come prepared if weather or wind is expected. Grounds are nice to walk with some shaded seating. Hope to return and see what else takes root in a few years!

I had no issues with my stay Jessica was very quick to respond, left plenty of information for me to find the property/entrance/site. I was bikepacking so It was just my bike & tent.
Ground was soft and flat.
Area was quite.
Price is good
Bathroom with flush toilet
You can see some Big Ole' Birds
10/10 would bird again.
