2 nights at Mt Rancho (FKA La Montaña Ranch)

this was our first time trying hipcamp and it was a 10/10 experience. our site was very excluded and private. we had access to a compost toilet (which was very nice) and a shower. a little hike up the road was the most amazing view ever. *a little disclaimer, i recommend bringing a car that is better suited for off roading. my honda accord did make it fine however it is a long dirt road and there were a few times it struggled. i also don’t recommend this site for those who may be handicap without help as the bathroom and shower are a walk up and down a hill. other than that we had an amazing experience and would definitely book here again! i would also love to stay at the other sites on the property

We had a great stay at la Montana ranch, the views from the campsite were unbelievable - the animals were so lovely (especially the goats) and Chris was a great host, really communicative and so hospitable - giving us great recommendations for our trip. One of the best camp sites we’ve stayed in!

We loved our stay at The Range. Karina and Chris were gracious host who accommodated all of our needs. I highly recommend this location for anyone looking to escape the crowded campsites at the beach looking to enjoy some peace and quiet in nature.

Wow - Johansing farms is one of those slices of heaven that we have been so lucky to be invited into. Will & Jesse (and their two girls) were the most welcoming, made sure we had everything we needed and answered all of our questions about the property with smiles on their faces. You can tell they have poured a lot of love into this land. We will definitely be coming back and telling all of our friends about it!

Couldn't have asked for a nicer host or a more beautiful place to camp. Jac was super warm and welcoming (he even left camping chairs and a tub with takeout menus, playing cards, and amenities) and the site is spectacular -- big views of the surrounding hills and vineyards, big oaks with the namesake twisting branches, and a big sky filled with stars at night. Put this site on your list.

The property is phenomenal and the hosts are the mot genuine, welcoming and nicest people I've met in a while. Add to that some tours of the property on Darin's quad, some goats and chickens for the kids to go hang out with, a beautiful little spring blossom on the hills all around and we may have just gotten the best Memorial Day weekend at Freedog Farms. Huge thanks to Sierra and Darin for having created this little paradise!

We stayed at the art studio and it was perfect for our large family group. Plenty of privacy! Sierra and Darin were great hosts and very responsive to any questions or needs we had. Facilities were as described. Location was amazing, so many things to do within a few minutes, wineries, animal farms, Solvang, hikes, etc. Would definitely book here again!

What a wonderful place to get away for a weekend. Darin and sierra are so welcoming and very accommodating to give every guest the best time, you’ll feel like family. Spent Memorial Day weekend with our puppy and it was fantastic. They have such a nice variety of rad camping spots and unique stay options throughout the property. The barn area is awesome to hang out and make new friends or give some love to all the animals. A definite must.

Freedog Farms was an awesome place to camp over a holiday weekend. Sierra and Darin are very welcoming and helpful. Saturday night they light the fire and the BBQ by the barn, and it was a wonderful way to visit with folks and BBQ my steaks over a wood fire. The site I had encompassed a beautiful view and there was a lovely propane fire pit to safely enjoy a fire in the evening. I loved reclining in my camping chair by the fire and watching the stars. Their site is 15 minutes away from Solvang and Santa Ynez valley. There is so much nearby to see do, taste, and experience. I cannot wait to go back.

A really fun, unique camping experience. The host was very welcoming and friendly. The fully stocked outdoor kitchen was amazing! Plenty of different hang out zones. As our kids are getting older they are complaining more about family camping trips, but loved this fun setup. Also, pigs so cute and friendly.

We loved camping at The Range in our tent trailer. We had a group of 9 people (5 kids and two dogs) and there was plenty of room for all of us. We felt like we were literally on top of the world with beautiful views all the way to Morro Bay. It was incredibly peaceful with no one else around and just a short drive to SLO. The kids loved the pigs (especially the little pink one that would run down the hill and greet us every time we drove by), the goats, and all the ranch dogs. We enjoys some fresh farm eggs one morning. It did get a little windy in the middle of the night with some heavy fog, so just come prepared for that. We will definitely come back again!!!

The area has a rich history, of gold and silver mining and bank robbers. Jesse and Frank James lived at the nearby La Panza Ranch while nursing gunshot wounds. We are a short drive from Pozo Road, where you will find yourself nestled under an oak amongst the season's vegetation. Abundant wildlife in the camp area with pigs, coyotes and Tule elk residing in the mountains on the property. Seasonal birds, wildflowers and cattle grazing. Hike, bike or just relax on the property and enjoy the star gazing that comes without the city lights. It's just a few minutes down the road to the Los Padres National Forrest but at least 45 minutes to the closest town. If you bring your dirt bikes or ATVs you'll need to enjoy them only while on the forest property. We enjoy our wildlife and work to protect it with rotational cattle grazing. We are secluded and it feels like you're far away from city life yet San Luis Obispo is only a twenty minute drive away. We neighbor Los Padres National Forest which has several miles of hiking and biking trails. On our farm we have 10 sheep, 10 goats, 22 chickens, 2 pigs, 4 dogs and a cat. Interaction with farm animals is common place as most campsites are close to our animal pastures. Bee hives are located on the property as well. All of our sites are spread out with plenty of space for social distancing. DRY CAMPING: All of our sites are DRY camping (no water/electricity.) We provide a picnic table and one umbrella and a propane fire pit with a propane tank. Please bring additional shade structures if you think you’ll need more shade. Our best sites, with little-to-no traffic noise, (and the best views) are on our back property. Best suited for tents, camper vans, trucks, and SMALL trailers or SMALL RVs. There is a semi-steep hill up to our upper property if you're towing a trailer you will need a powerful vehicle to make it up the hill. Sites on our lower property by the common area are easily accessible with views up the hills/mountains but come with some highway noise. We imagine it sounds like waves crashing and call it the "steel river." For your private camp area, please bring your own drinking water, water to wash dishes and if think you'll need: chairs, camp tables, umbrellas or shade structures, trash bags/cans (throw your trash in the dumpster out side our entry gate when you leave. Plan on being fully self-sufficient. Otherwise, feel free to use the common area BBQ, Sink, tables and chairs at the barn until 10 pm. MOST DOGS WELCOMED... WE PROHIBIT UN-neutered aggressive breed dogs. DOGS ARE FREE TO RUN UNLEASHED ALL OVER OUR LAND. The front of our property is all. Fenced. The back property just has barbed wire. ABOUT OUR DOGS: We have one female dog and three male dogs (one of the three is UN-NEUTERED) a 10-year-old yellow lab (Titan-Dan.) A 14-year-old American Dingo (Reno.) 5-year-old Great Pyrenees (Bandit.) And then there is Cannoli a 7-year-old female Great Pyrenees who adopted us we saw her come through the bushes from the neighbors property across the highway… She ran across the highway and jumped the medium and ran up to our gate, she hasn’t left since… COMMON USE AREA: Inside and near the barn include tables, chairs, hammocks, wood fire pit, outdoor propane BBQ and stove, wash sink and outdoor mineral shower, and mineral cold plunge tubs. FIRE SAFETY and PROPANE FIREPITS: We have “very safe” propane firepits and fire extinguishers at every site. Under the right conditions, we will light a real wood fire at the common area by the barn. Feel free to join us in the early evening until 10pm. PORTA-POTTIES: We have porta-potties next to the Barn, the Garden, Running Dog Flats, and the Art Studio. They are pumped clean every Thursday and are generally very lightly used. If you don’t want to use the porta-potties we recommend/encourage you to bring your own camp toilet, bags, and absorbent. WILDLIFE: Our dogs do a great job of fending off the resident bobcat and coyotes on the front portion of our property and by the barn, if they are barking in the night there's a reason. If you end up camping on the front portion of our property and think their barking will affect your sleep, bring earplugs ;-). Drinking-WATER, Dish Washing Water and Shade: All of our sites are dry camping i.e. there is no potable water available. Please bring all your own drinking/dishwashing water. We have a picnic table and 1 umbrella at all the sites. Please bring additional shade i.e. easy up or other shade structures if you think you'll need it. Cold Mineral Dunks and Hot Outdoor Mineral Shower: We have huge aluminum cowboy cold dunk tubs available at what we lovingly/jokingly refer to as our very own “Cactus Flower Beach,” which is not a real beach… It feels like a beach because we’ve decked it out with lounge chairs, a daybed cabana, 150K pounds of sand and tiki-hut umbrellas. It’s fun to hang out there when it’s hot under the shade of the pepper trees. NOTE: The Outdoor Shower screening is a tad see-through. If you are shy, wear a bathing suit. Please limit showers to 3-5 minutes max. Mineral Water Definition: Water from a mineral spring or well (i.e. our well) that contains various minerals, such as salts and sulfur compounds. TRASH: Please pack all your trash out to the large trash bin located at the entrance to our property. Please take your recycling with you. ELECTRICITY and Wi-Fi: We have charging stations in the barn for your computers, phones, etc. Password: HowdyDoody (Accessible in and near the barn common area.) COMMISSARY: We have farm fresh eggs and meats from the pork palace across the street, and other swag i.e Hats for sale in the barn. FEED THE CHICKENS AND GOATS: Please feel free to feed the goats and chickens your vegetable scraps and or bring them a treat they love full heads of cabbage, lettuce, cantaloupe and watermelon. CHILDREN: For safety, children must be always accompanied by an adult! Twisted Branch

We named our property the Twisted Branch after one of the big oak trees that sits on the site where you will camp with us! It's on a hilltop with amazing views in nearly all directions. The campsite faces South/West so sunsets are fantastic. We use no chemicals on the soil or annual grasses. It is very quiet and the night sky is always stunning. Owls hoot at night and Redtail Hawks hunt for ground squirrels during the day. We have alot of Acorn woodpeckers living in the oak trees, the ones with the bright red head feathers. April through June we see bright yellow Orioles. At night you will hear hundreds of little frogs in the nearby ponds, depending on the season. We are located in the heart of Wine Country and there are plenty of activities around us and in town.

We would come up and camp under the tree, and plant. In 2007, we drilled a well. In 2008, Dan proposed under the tree, and we brought in power. We have continued to make improvements since. We built a little house, then we built a big house, we added farm animals, kids, fruit trees, a jam line, a pond, and more keep coming! So come up and enjoy the farm like we did in the good old days! See you at the Farm! Pitch your tent or park your RV on our 37-acre farm. The campground connects to a hiking trail that takes you to a 2-acre landscaped garden, or to our friendly goats & chickens. The grant has since been divided, but large pieces of land still remain, mostly inhabited by mountainous wildlife, ground squirrels, rabbits, coyotes and cattle. This area is also rich in Chumash history. Million-dollar views of the Caliente Mountain Range await you for evening sunsets and the Sierra Madre Mountain Range await you for your morning coffee enjoyment. Don't miss the brilliance of the famous Cottonwood Canyon Wildflowers with your front row seat. For your comfort, there is a 16x20 rustic-style shade structure (which has also been used for a dance floor!), water spigot, fire pit, small BBQ, and an outhouse. We have oak firewood available for purchase and a larger BBQ capable of cooking for 200+ guests available for rent, if needed. This site also provides plenty of parking for multiple RV’s and can accommodate larger groups.

During fire ban propane fire pits are available and are complimentary.We have great amenities including toilets, picnic tables, and trash bins. Pets and generators are also allowed but only vehicles under 30 ft are allowed at our sites.Our guests love us too! "It was really nice to camp in the vineyard.
